Many of you remember the iconic Mirthmobile from, "Wayne's World," fame. The AMC Pacer featured in that film came complete with a licorice dispenser and a wicked soundtrack by Queen. I think that was actually the first time I heard, "Bohemian Rhapsody".
This Pacer doesn't have a licorice dispenser but it's fully tricked out with all the 'coolest' features for this month's Lugnuts challenge, "Fire and Ice." There is a monster sound system in the hatch accompanied by 20" LCD flat panel TV and a PS3 console. The stock motor has been swapped out for an inline 6 cylinder 4.0 liter Jeep engine. 18" rims front and rear complete the package for one icy cool ride.
Oh wait, what's that? I forgot to mention something? Ah yes, of course. What 1975 Pacer would be complete without lambo doors? The Pacer was remarkably ahead of its time actually, despite making the list of the 50 worst cars of all time. Heralded as the first wide-body compact car, the Pacer also featured a passenger door that was 4 inches longer than the driver side door for easier access to the back seat. This is nicely highlighted by the scissor door kit on the latest creation from Proudlove Design Studio; "Brain Freeze!"
Be sure to check out, "Hot Flash," from the twisted mind of Lino Martins, highlighting a 'hot' feature of another car that made the, "50 Worst," list.

As stated by the artist Scott Hove, “all beautiful things are equipped with a defense mechanism, to protect against the predations of those who seek to possess.”
This cake is a response to that statement. What defense does a cake have against its predators, an eager audience awaiting its inevitable carve? A sugar beast mouth might offer it some element of protection, even if only temporary or fleeting.
The entire frame was made completely out of sugar and painted in edible gold. This cake was designed to celebrate the relationship between the beautiful and the brutal.
For Scott Hove.
Yes, I’m back in the kitchen. And with a vengeance.

Somewhere betwixt the thickly-lined coils of one man's brain and the deep recesses of his wonderfully dark mind lies a lone isle. And on that isle a beautiful and haunting creature was birthed. A young siren of porcelain skin, gently folded hand, clothed in Victorian dress. A perfect expression of youthful fragility and innocence, and at the same time an emblem of physical betrayal and contradiction.
Beached on her rock, she flaunts her compromise--delicately patterned tentacles, heavy and entangled, and hinged by sharply, hooked talons. Products, perhaps, of an evolutionary and necessary defense.
Here, on this lone isle, she can find respite and sanctity. Here, she can be championed despite the burden of the anchors she carries--memories, things, people and time--the flotsam and jetsam of life. This is her duality. This is her beauty.
...for Ray. Thank you for your wonderfully dark and imaginative mind.

As many of you know, I'm not a huge fan of gumpaste flowers, roses and the like. Unless, of course, they happen to have some awkward or unfortunate twist to them, or perhaps some architectural element that goes beyond the usual.
While I prefer projects that lend themselves to a stronger architectural and sculptural standard, I had a request from a friend who wanted something very traditional yet bold. She wanted roses. I pleaded for a cake topper that would resemble something from the Renaissance Age. She wanted simple and elegant. I begged for something ornate and sublime. She gave me colors. I digressed. And so it goes...
Simple, traditional elegance. She was happy.
This is a strawberry/apricot cake dressed as the iconic R2D2.
Not too shabby looking, me thinks. Broad shoulders, tapered waist, mechanical good looks. Don't tell this to the cake---he'll get a big ego and it'll all go to his head.
Star Wars will never be the same.
May the force be with you,

You've Got to Believe
As the “King of the Winds,” Boreas assigned to each of his brothers a permanent grant of great force and power. To Titan was assigned the blustery North Wind. To Euros was granted control of the irresponsible East Wind. To Zephyrus was given custody of the bountiful West Wind. To Notos was presented the balmy but unstable South Wind. The brothers cavorted gaily over land and sea. Boreas, while on his extensive travels, came upon a winter paradise known as Minnesota. He paused to behold the enchanting beauty of a magnificent group of seven gently sloping hills in whose embrace nestled a beautiful city. Boreas whistled in sheer ecstasy, “Historic Saint Paul and her seven hills! An ideal place. I will make Saint Paul the capitol of all my domains. It will henceforth be emblazoned to the world as the winter playground of the Realm of Boreas.”
Meanwhile, Vulcanus Rex, the god of Fire, and the implacable enemy of Boreas, crackled in defiant disdain. “By the great sword of Mars I will temper the blusterings of Boreas with the heat and roar of my forces.” He was tireless in his bitter resistance to all the festivities of Boreas.
Undaunted, Boreas proclaimed a celebration in the spirit of Carnival. “So be it!” shouted Boreas, “There will be a Carnival in old Saint Paul!” Boreas selected a Prime Minister to coordinate preparations in all the Principalities, Provinces and Royal Houses within the realm of Saint Paul.
And so, for ten glorious days, there was Carnival and joyous celebration in St. Paul — feasting, dancing, fun and frolic reigned over by Boreas and the Queen of Snows, the fairest maiden of the realm, along with the four Winds, who were each accompanied by a lovely Princess from the realm of Boreas. Klondike Kate, a lady of song and merriment, added her sassy but enchanting voice to the festivities by singing songs of desire and sentiment.
Senior King Winter, Queen of the Northlands, and their court contributed good will and wisdom, while Junior King Frost and Queen of the Snowflakes with their court, add youthful exuberance to the festival.
On the 10th day of celebration, Vulcanus Rex and his Krewe stormed the magnificent ice castle and confronted the King’s Guard. Upon the good counsel of the Queen, Boreas bade farewell to the people of his winter capitol in the interest of peace and goodwill, and returned to dwell among the gods of Olympus. Boreas and his court looked forward to the time when summer’s warmth would once again relinquish its hold on the realm and the frosty atmosphere of winter would prevail.

Japanese-themed cake comprised of the elements of water, earth and air. The Katsushika Hokusai waves (Edo period, 1615 - 1868) represent strength and power. The great Daishizen (Mother Nature) hovers amidst the branches of her trees, cloaked in cherry blossoms, the same ones provided by her that demonstrate the stability and beauty of her earth. The sky above connotes limitless journey, adventure and happiness. Origami sugar cranes appear to be prepared to take flight.
"Futatsu" is the Japanese word for "two". It's the composition of these elements that bring two people together (and perhaps being in the right place at the right time). That certainly seems to be the case for one such couple.
For Phil and Eric. May you embark on a wonderful, limitless journey together.

Mark Ryden “The Gay Nineties West” Art Exhibit, Michael Kohn Gallery, Hollywood, CA
May 3, 2014
The Fractal Bunny, or so I’ve titled him, is better known for his appearance in one of Mark Ryden’s greatest works, The Ecstacy of Cecilia. It was a pleasure and an honor to bake a cake for one of the world’s greatest pop-surrealist painters of our time. A brilliant show from one of the most brilliant minds in the contemporary art world today.
Mark and Marion, you are truly gifted artists, and true pop icons to this lost generation of dark souls!
May the future bring you both the continued success you so rightly deserve.

A two-day event at various locations around the city centre of Durham, billed as a chance to "witness ice sculptures and flaming beacons bringing back to life stories of myths and legends from times gone by"
There were ice sculptors working of various pieces throughout the two days and a number of ice sculptures which had presumably been completed earlier. I initially went on the Friday and was genuinely impressed and being half-term, there were a lot of families with young children who had the chance to try their hand at some ice carving.
The only issue I had with the event was the longevity of the static ice sculptures.. I'd been impressed so much that I went back on day two with my wife and son, only to discover that the same static ice sculptures were on display as the previous day, although by now had melted to such an extent that it took some imagination to try and work out what they had originally been!
To be fair, the weather had been quite mild and particular windy, so I guess the sculptures melted much quicker than anticipated. I personally had thought the static exhibits would have been replaced with new ones for day two as they had evidently been markedly in meltdown on day one. It's obvious that such a spectacle has a limited time frame in which to take place and expecting an ice sculpture to remain intact for 48 hours in relatively mild and windy weather was pushing it somewhat.
Still, full marks to Durham though, which staged something a little out of the ordinary and received lots of attention (especially on day one).
The term "Fire and Ice " certainly fits the description of this specially prepared Toyota Hilux, the Hilux's exceptional toughness and emphasised "unhbreakable" title has been proven, during a recent International adventure to the fiery heart of Icelands Eyjafjallajökull Volcano earlier this year.
