Raking line on forest fire near Solley, June 1925
One of State Forester Besley’s first tasks was to create a network of volunteer Forest Wardens to enforce Maryland’s new forest fire protection laws. At the turn of the century, uncontrolled fires took their toll, regularly leading to loss of life and property. Early forest wardens were trained and deployed to combat wildfires in an effort to protect the public and ensure that millions of seedlings being planted would survive.
The Maryland Forest and Park services were founded in 1906. These photos were archived in celebration of their centennial in 2006.
Devotees typically queue up for seats a day in advanced. It is so crammed that those who come late have absolutely no chance of getting near the fire pit.
It was an eventful day at TJM today. Fortunately no staff were hurt, though two firemen suffered mild injuries fighting the fire. They did a grand job and had the fire more or less out within a couple of hours.
