A maintenance member assigned to the 157th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron performs operational checks in the cockpit an F-16 Fighting Falcon after landing at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia, Sept. 13, 2018. As part of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, the 407th Air Expeditionary Group provides combat airpower in support of U.S. Central Command military objectives. Battle of Britain memorial flight, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and 73 years of USAF Occupation of RAF Mildenhall. Featuring the Red Arrows, KC-135 Stratotanker, C-130 Herculese and a handful of F-15 E fighter jets.
On D-Day, June 6 1944, the Thunderbolts flew ground support missions in support of the Normandy invasion. Massed allied airpower pulverized German positions and kept the Lutfwaffe well away from the invasion beaches ensuring Allied freedom of action. The Thunderbolts operated as part of the IX Tactical Air Force, 9th AF, under the command of B Gen Elwood Quesada. General Quesada was a tactical innovator, and the driving force behind the successful integration of air and land forces in the battle for Europe.
