An RCAF CF-18 Hornet from 425 Squadron, Bagotville Quebec, in for a gun run at the 2023 Barrie Airshow. There was no technical “Demo Team” that year so, the RCAF provided us with a “Tactical Demo” showcasing the CF-18’s multirole mission capabilities all the way from overwatch to weapon deployment.

Back to April 2012 at Hyakuri Air Force Base in Japan, during a time of increased tension with North Korea due to their missile testing. Consequently, when the usual military runway was already in use, some recoveries were made on the other runway usually reserved for traffic on the civil airport side of the airfield. So, 'right place, right time' as JASDF F-4EJ Phantom 37-8320 from the based 302 Hikotai recovers from a sortie and deploys its brake chute.

On D-Day, June 6 1944, the Thunderbolts flew ground support missions in support of the Normandy invasion. Massed allied airpower pulverized German positions and kept the Lutfwaffe well away from the invasion beaches ensuring Allied freedom of action. The Thunderbolts operated as part of the IX Tactical Air Force, 9th AF, under the command of B Gen Elwood Quesada. General Quesada was a tactical innovator, and the driving force behind the successful integration of air and land forces in the battle for Europe.
