After the defeat of Nazi Germany, the 389th was part of the post-war occupation forces until inactivation on 20 August 1946. Reactivated on 1 January 1953, the 389th Fighter Bomber Squadron began operations at Alexandria (later England) Air Force Base, Louisiana. During its six year stay in Louisiana, the squadron flew the F 51 Mustang, the F 86 Sabre, the F 84F Thunderstreak and the F 100 Supersabre.
