A Caledonian MacBrayne car ferry connects the island with Largs, Ayrshire on the Scottish mainland. Millport pier dates from 1833 and that at Largs from 1845. Renovations to Largs pier in 2008, costing £6m, required the ferry to berth overnight at Fairlie.

Millport was served by Clyde steamers until the 1960s. Largs is now a regular calling point for PS Waverley. For nearly 20 years from 1967, passenger ferry, MV Keppel crossed to Millport pier. In early April 1977, car ferry MV Isle of Cumbrae took up the crossing to Cumbrae Slip and continued until the sisters MV Loch Striven and MV Loch Linnhe arrived in the summer of 1986. A new ferry, MV Loch Shira, built at Ferguson Shipbuilders in Port Glasgow, entered service on 2 June 2007. At peak times, she is partnered by one of the original Loch class vessels.

I think they look ugly compared to the stately 'First Fleet' class of ferries. And they are no match for the beautiful, sleek 'Rivercat'. But anyway, that's just me.

Day two of our trip to Scotland ended with us taking the ferry across Loch Linnhe to Ardgour. The Inn was just across the Ferry terminal so I got a good view of the comings and goings.

The Grand Manan Ferry returns to the mainland, navigating the tricky tidal currents on approach to Black's Harbour. Note the high tide mark on the rocks in the distance.

The red brick buildings in the background are part of the Albert Dock, the largest collection of Grade One Listed buildings in the U.K.

The unusual building in the background is the Catholic cathedral, with it's "Crown of thorns" above the stained glass lantern tower.

Abstraction demands more from me than realism. Instead of reproducing something outside of me, now I go inward and use everything I've learned thus far in my life. (Susan Avishai)

Taken from Maryland Heights from the Maryland side of the Potomac River, after a long walk from the town below, which is in West Virginia state. The town is absolutely lovely, and one can still hear church bells, one of the few places in the USA where bells are ringing, the only other one I know is Charleston, South Carolina, more on the latter coming in the future. The town has historical significance, wikilink:

While at Pier Head on our walk...let's catch the ferry. This is one of the two current craft operating. The 60+ years old craft, with it's rather garish paintjob by Peter Blake...( Peter Blake is most famous for The Beatles Sgt Pepper album cover. )

This, thankfully, will soon be replaced by a new, larger and more tastefully liveried ferry, currently under construction at Cammel Laird's shipyard, on the Mersey.

False Creek Ferries

The ferry dock is located at the north-west corner of Granville Island directly near the Public Market hall. The little blue ferries sail every 5 minutes from Granville Island to downtown Vancouver, and every 15 minutes on all other routes.

The ferries have not only become an integral part of transit in Vancouver but a great sightseeing experience as well !

On one of my previous "ferry" pics DianaWorth sent me the following comment..

""We call these little boats, "pickle boats" because from above they are the shape of a pickle! I often take one from downtown to Granville Island market to buy vegetables on the way home."" :-))

Ferry crossing from Gourock to Hunters Quay in the late evening sun.

Gravina Island, just across the passage from Ketchikan, can only be reached by boat--an interesting situation when it comes to doing the weekly shopping. Many of the occupants have their own small motorized skiffs but the ferry is also a popular choice especially for getting those kids to school. Interestingly, the Ketchikan International Airport is also located on Gravina Island and can only be reached by ferry, a situation that has caused a number of scandals and controversies over the years, as numerous bridge proposals have fallen through the political cracks.

A ferry being loaded for taking people, goods and even vehicles across to Majuli,an island in the mighty River Brahmaputra near Jorhat in Assam in north-east India.Majuli has been recognized as the largest river island by the Guinness Book of records. It was approx 1025 sq kms in area at the beginning of the last century but due to erosion it is now around 352 sq kms in area .It is the centre of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture.

You can catch a glimpse of Majuli on the far side of the river.

Unfortunately we had no time to explore Majuli on this trip but we mean to go back sometime.:-)

The old ferry during a very golden sunset in the Kalmar strait. I thought I'd try something different and go for a vertical shot - something I rarely do otherwise.

Harper's Ferry has about 300 full time residents and about 100 historical buildings. Most of which are attached to one another or running up the side of this huge hill. This one building stood out to me because it sits by itself, on level ground. The architecture of the town is very interesting and in some places you can see remnants of a former building built within a newer one. Some of these buildings house actual shops or restaurants and some have displays of what might have been in them from a couple hundred years ago. I was standing up on a hill where the railroad tracks run. The Amtrak train passes through Harper's Ferry and stops several times a day. I think Anita and I would like to take that train one day! :)
