With the males departing immediately after the reproductive act the females provide all the parental care. Newly hatched chicks are almost naked, blind and totally helpless. They seem to be all head, with tightly closed eyes and the barest indication of a beak. Even so, their crops are well developed and the mother begins feeding them extraordinary amounts of food shortly after hatching. Newborns are fed a diet almost entirely of insects and gradually nectar is introduced. Mom feeds her babies by inserting her long beak well down their throats and regurgitating the food from her crop into that of the young ones. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird will feed her chicks from 1 to 3 times every hour.

We had thunderstorms during the night and strong south winds this morning. The Painted Buntings weren't up singing like they have been, but feeding down in the grass. Hard to see and harder to photo.
Our beautiful world, pass it on.
Hope no-one is sick of Carnaby's yet! This is the ECU chick being fed by his Dad (pink eye-ring = male) a few days before he fledged. The university put out a media release today with some background information - hooray for eagle-eyed students.

This is a small collection of photos of feed mills that can be found in the downtown of Petaluma. Petaluma's skyline is scattered with these mills that give our small town character and reminds us of the history of our city.

Managed to get this shot out of our bedroom window.
When feeding started the parent birds were bringing in very small caterpillars. They are now about a week into bringing up the chicks and the caterpillars are getting bigger, not sure if they are the same cats that are growing bigger or the birds are choosing larger ones as the chicks grow. They also occasionally bring spiders and moths.

Ok I couldn't resist any longer. This was taken yesterday when the lighting wasn't very good as we had a very dull drizzly day on Skomer, but it's always worth going :)
Feeding the Jays monkey nuts at our local hot-spot for 'garden' wildlife. We only spent 10 minutes or so feeding the birds ans squirrels. At some point if I can ever manage to escape work, I'll try and get some more inspired shots. Ohh for a D700 with better high ISO performance ! Come on Nikon, it is nearly Christmas ! Pleeeeeease...... :oD

Changi Airport Butterfly Farm, Singapore
Of all the airports we have visited around the world to date, Singapore airport wins hands down in terms of comfort, service and convenience. This butterfly farm was another one of those experiences to help pass the time there among other activities such as free movies and eating :)
Not really a bokeh shot but HBW anyway!

Feeding on a Dog Rose.
The thick-legged flower beetle is a pollinator of many open-structured flowers including cow parsley, ox-eye daisy and --- bramble. The adults can be seen from April to September but the larvae are well concealed within the dry stems of plants where they feed and grow before emerging to become adults. These beetles are most frequently spotted in bright sunlight on flower heads on warm to hot days.
I am guessing this is a juvenile or at least a YBM that wants to be a juvie. We heard him (or her) yapping up in the tree and doing the baby bird "feed me wing flap".
This is the last of the 5 Green Heron chicks to still be chasing mom and dad around to be fed. They were a very late hatch for the season as most all the adults in the area have already left for the south and I suspect that these adults will be leaving as soon as this last baby is hunting on it's own.
