Like most other sedimentary rocks, most limestone is composed of grains. Most grains in limestone are skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera. Other carbonate grains comprising limestones are ooids, peloids, intraclasts, and extraclasts. These organisms secrete shells made of aragonite or calcite, and leave these shells behind when they die.
Featured in this new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is a nearly edge-on view of the lenticular galaxy NGC 4753. Lenticular galaxies have an elliptical shape and ill-defined spiral arms.
This image is the object's sharpest view to date, showcasing Hubble’s incredible resolving power and ability to reveal complex dust structures. NGC 4753 resides around 60 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo and was first discovered by the astronomer William Herschel in 1784. It is a member of the NGC 4753 Group of galaxies within the Virgo II Cloud, which comprises roughly 100 galaxies and galaxy clusters.
This galaxy is likely the result of a galactic merger with a nearby dwarf galaxy roughly 1.3 billion years ago. NGC 4753’s distinct dust lanes around its nucleus probably accreted from this merger event.
Astronomers think that most of the mass in the galaxy lies in a slightly flattened, spherical halo of dark matter. Dark matter is called ‘dark’ because we cannot directly observe it, but astronomers think it comprises about 85% of all matter in the universe. Dark matter doesn’t appear to interact with the electromagnetic field, and therefore does not seem to emit, reflect, or refract light. We can only detect it by its gravitational influence on the matter we can see, called normal matter.
NGC 4753’s low-density environment and complex structure make it scientifically interesting to astronomers who can use the galaxy in models that test different theories of formation of lenticular galaxies. The galaxy has also hosted two known Type Ia supernovae. These types of supernovae are extremely important in the study of the expansion rate of the universe. Because they are the result of exploding white dwarfs which have companion stars, they always peak at the same brightness -- 5 billion times brighter than the Sun. Knowing the intrinsic brightness of these events and comparing that with their apparent brightness allows astronomers to use them to measure cosmic distances, which in turn help us determine how the universe has expanded over time.

Deboxing the Rapunzel Feature Doll. Rapunzel's inner box slides out from the bottom, not the top of the box. First you have to detach the 'try me' switch from the front window by undoing two layers of tape. Once freed from the tape, it can be pushed back through a hole in the box to fall inside the box. The other end of the switch plugs into a socket in the back of the doll, and is detachable once the doll is deboxed. Then the doll is removed from the box, still attached to the inner backing. The backing can free stand, and now the doll is in the clear.
The recently released Disney Store Deluxe Feature Rapunzel Doll. She is part of the line of new 16 inch singing Princess dolls for 2015. They not only sing, but each also comes with an accessory and have other special features. They also come in a sturdy reusable box with a satin carrying handle. They are available online and in stores in North America, and cost $49.95 each. Rapunzel I think is the most impressive doll in the line, and the most different from previous singing dolls of the same character.
Once the 'try me' switch is detached, you trigger the sound and lights by sliding the lantern back and forth a little way along her hand. There is a LED light in the palm of her hand that flickers while she is singing, and lights up the lantern. She sings about 35 seconds of the 'Healing Incantation' song very clearly and just the right volume. The sound is better than any previous DS singing doll that I have heard. The gentleness of the song, with accompanying lights, and the beauty of the doll, makes for a very moving experience. I don't think I will get tired of hearing the song and seeing the lights on this doll.

Noticed Getty Images has featured a photo of mine in their special "Finland 100 years" selection! 🇫🇮💯
My photo is the winter scene from Helsinki, right there in the middle of the national heroes like Sibelius, Tarja Halonen, Jari Litmanen & Matti Nykänen. Only ~50 photos in the selection alltogether, so really proud to be selected from the gazillion photos Getty has (even from FI)!

Caryatid is the name given to an architectural column which takes the form of a standing female figure. The first examples come from ancient Greek architecture and indeed, the most celebrated examples are found in the south porch of the Erechtheion on the acropolis of Athens.
Naming & Origins
The term Caryatid first appears in the 4th century BCE and was coined by Vitruvius in reference to Karyai in Laconia where women often danced balancing a basket on their heads in honour of Artemis and where Caryatids were used in Archaic architecture. They were an evolution of the earlier korai statues of both male and female figures prevalent throughout the Archaic period and used as columns in Ionian architecture. These were themselves an evolution of Persian columns which often employed animal figures within the column design.
The most famous Caryatids are the six which support the roof of the porch of the Erechtheion on the Athenian acropolis.
Archaic Caryatids were usually used in the porches of Treasury buildings which were built to house offerings from specific states at religious sanctuaries such as Delphi and Olympia. The most important treasury at Delphi was from the Siphnians (c. 525 BCE) and this and at least two other Treasuries had Caryatids. Caryatids of this period often have a short column drum above the head in order to facilitate the join with the column capital.
The Erechtheion
The most famous Caryatids are the six which support the roof of the false south porch of the Erechtheion on the Athenian acropolis. This building was constructed between 421 and 406 BCE as part of Pericles’ great project to rejuvenate the architecture of the great city. The Erechtheion was built to house the ancient wooden cult statue of Athena but also served as a centre for the cults of Erechtheus (a mythical king of Athens), his brother Boutes, Hephaistos and Poseidon.
The Caryatids display features which would become staple elements of Classical sculpture: clothes which cling to the body (the ‘wet look’) and a bold and more dynamic positioning of the hips and legs. Although each Caryatid wears the same robe - a belted Doric peplos and short himation - each is uniquely rendered, a feature particularly noticeable in their intricate plaited hairstyles (best seen from the rear). The arms of the figures have unfortunately been lost but Roman copies show them holding in their right hands phialai - shallow vessels for pouring libations - whilst their left hand raised slightly their robe. Scholars believe them to be carved by different artists, most probably from the workshop of Alcamenes, student and colleague of Pheidias.
The Caryatids now on the acropolis are copies, five of the originals reside in the Acropolis Museum of Athens and the other is in the British Museum, London.

Go Lancer have decided to try their hand at offering a tour programme, hence the arrival of this more upmarket coach that is very different from anything else operated. Featuring a very distinctive and unique multi-coloured livery, number 91 (L966 MWB) is a Neoplan Cityliner with 48 reclining seats, air conditioning, toilet and servery, a far cry from the basic 53-seaters that dominate the fleet.
Double feature of 1997’s small droid ships, the V-Wing and Cyber Blaster enter the LEGO City!
These tiny old sets were heavy on cool intricate prints. All about the minifigs here, but the V-Wing has some really fun classic space elements and shaping!
‘97 picks up with leg printing, which hadn’t been seen in a space theme since ‘94s Spyrius droid, Major Kartofski. And we’ll see leg prints on their human counterparts next time I look at RoboForce.
Happy to have both the Techdroids from this theme back in my collection, which Techdroid do you like better- red or blue?

These clients wanted a sleek contemporary space for entertaining, with a stylish water feature. Three separate rendered walls, each with its own stainless steel water chute create a dramatic backdrop to this garden.
Three standard photinias are each underlit to highlight the foliage. The spacious hardwood deck has ample space for a large table and chairs for eating out, and the contemporary planting consists mainly of grasses and other plants with architectural foliage.
The original brickwork behind the three green walls has been painted over to give contrasting texture and an industrial feel to this minimilistic scheme.
