I've been an extreme weather junkie since I was a kid. Where I grew up in Mississippi, there were tornadoes and hurricanes. Maine doesn't have such violent storms, but we do have our own extreme weather, the cold. It seems like the first two weeks of January feature a below-zero cold snap every year. I was at Five Islands for this occurence two years ago, and witnessed my first sea smoke. Last year we went big at Portland Head Light and got some great images, one that is now a 8x9 foot mural at the new Berlin City Honda in South Portland.
There was a lot of pressure to build on those experiences and go even bigger this year. Rockland is a place I love to visit. It's a little far away at over an hour east on Route 1, but I don't have a lot of images from here and there are two fantastic targets I wanted to shoot with sea smoke, the Breakwater Lighthouse and Owls Head Harbor.
The date was set and come 4 AM Thursday Morning, we were on the road. It was dark when we arrived, but already we could see the mist pouring off the water. I had about 5 layers of clothing on, including some new mittens that really worked wonders saving my fingers from frostbite later on. It didn't feel like a very long time, but apparently I stood out there in the cold for about two hours. I was so determined to get my shot that everything else kind of faded away. It was a sublime two hours.
So, this is the frame I had in mind when I went out. As usual, several other possibilities presented themselves while I was out there, and the vortex over Owls Head has to be the shot that I will come away being happiest with. This was taken just after that. I took off the gloves and grabbed the extremely cold metal lenses with my barehands to change them and get the right focal length for this wide-angle shot taken just as the sun made it over the plumes of sea smoke on the horizon. You can see the hoar frost that formed on the rocks as the mist crept between them. It was beautiful.

Another one from my archives, this photo feature was prepared for a specialist magazine some time ago; I can't recall whether it was ever published. The text was believed to be correct at the time of writing (c2008):
"Austin was always a minor player in the PSV market, with models so closely based on contemporary Bedfords that they were often referred to as ‘Birmingham Bedfords’. Some success was achieved in the immediate post-war years, particularly in the export market, with products proudly branded as ‘Austin of England’. Four normal-control K4 chassis with the later ‘Loadstar’ bonnets were bodied as buses on Malta. They were stylish vehicles with generously curved front wings that bore a strong family resemblance to the post-war range of Austin cars. Brincat-bodied 3252 started out as a Mosta bus and is seen in the digital representation above in the merged Mosta-Naxxar livery. It continued in use as FBY 704 until 2003 and was scrapped two years later. Aquilina-bodied 2593 is seen in the digital representation below in Mellieha livery; and on the right at Valletta in 1993 as Y-0567, shortly before withdrawal. It was scrapped at Naxxar" (01-Apr-20).

Deboxing new Elsa 16'' Singing Doll. The Try Me button has been freed from the front window, then inner box is slid out of the outer box. The doll is attached to the backing, which is free standing.
I've finally gotten around to deboxing the Elsa Deluxe Feature Doll. I am way more impressed with her than I thought I would be. As with the Rapunzel Feature doll, the Try Me button on Elsa makes her sing about 10 seconds of Let It Go, and the lights in her forearms and cape turn on. The ten lights on the cape alternately light up on one side then the other as she sings. Once the Try Me button is detached from the front window, we can slide the doll out from the bottom of the box. The Try Me button is attached to her back, along with the lights on her cape. After the Try Me button is unplugged from her back, Elsa's sound and lights are triggered by sliding her ice swirl accessory a little way along her right hand. It is a bit hard to do the first time you try it, as the fit is very snug on her hand, and you have to push the bottom of the accessory very hard to get it to switch on her special effects. She sings about 30 seconds of Let It Go, the same segment as the older 16 inch singing Elsa doll. The singing is very clear, and just the right volume. I haven't compared the old doll with the new yet, as I need to replace the batteries on the old doll. The most outstanding feature of the doll is her cape, which has a glittery pattern of snowflakes and icicles completely covers the cape, and is even more detailed than the Classic Elsa's cape. It is slightly longer than floor length, so can hold its position. It is fully lined, to enclose the lights inside the cape. The other awesome feature of the doll are her semi transparent blue ice heels, which also have some glitter embedded.
