Picnic, Lightning
It is possible to be struck by a
meteor or a single-engine plane while
reading in a chair at home. Pedestrians
are flattened by safes falling from
rooftops mostly within the panels of
the comics, but still, we know it is
possible, as well as the flash of
summer lightning, the thermos toppling
over, spilling out on the grass.
And we know the message can be
delivered from within. The heart, no
valentine, decides to quit after
lunch, the power shut off like a
switch, or a tiny dark ship is
unmoored into the flow of the body's
rivers, the brain a monastery,
defenseless on the shore. This is
what I think about when I shovel
compost into a wheelbarrow, and when
I fill the long flower boxes, then
press into rows the limp roots of red
impatiens -- the instant hand of Death
always ready to burst forth from the
sleeve of his voluminous cloak. Then
the soil is full of marvels, bits of
leaf like flakes off a fresco,
red-brown pine needles, a beetle quick
to burrow back under the loam. Then
the wheelbarrow is a wilder blue, the
clouds a brighter white, and all I
hear is the rasp of the steel edge
against a round stone, the small
plants singing with lifted faces, and
the click of the sundial as one hour
sweeps into the next.

Another day to night conversion.
This old trading post has been around in some from or another since 1603. Let that melt on your tongue for a while.
I shot this in broad daylight on an overcast day but ultimately found it lacking, so I converted it to a dusk shot to embue it with some atmosphere.
With Trinidad in the rearview, Amtrak's westbound Southwest Chief #3 notches up as it digs in at the beginning of Raton Pass. Despite it being nearly 30 years since the Santa Fe name stood alone, one can still find themselves observing stainless passenger equipment snaking through Colorado and New Mexico under the Chief branding.
Santa Fe Caboose on the siding, a bit far from home since it is sitting in the Smokey Mountains, interesting find in North Carolina.
Santa Fe C30-7 #8073 painted in the SPSF merger scheme hustles Westbound through Vaughn, NM just after sunrise in April of 1990.
Neat to see the GP38-2 as third engine "pouring it on" as well!

The WC brought stuff to the Upper Peninsula that I'd never seen if the Soo had stayed. This SD45-SD35-SD45 combo at Trout Lake eastbound in October 1994 was typical of some of the crazy consists that ran by my house on a daily basis. Almost like having your own model train layout where you could mix and match things at whim. Train 35 arrives to make its set out with 5377, 2500 and 5400 along with 86 cars. A rescan of one of my earliest Flickr efforts.
