A small endemic songbird found only on the North Island of New Zealand. Note distinctive whitish head and underparts. Females and juveniles have cinnamon tinge to crown and nape. Often encountered in small feeding flocks that move quickly and loudly through the canopy with harsh chattering calls, trills, and slurs. Favors tall native forest and shrubs. Although a reluctant flier, the species is agile and acrobatic as it forages for insects, often hanging upside down. Male has a clear canary-like song. Adults can be seen feeding far larger Long-tailed Koel chicks, as this species is a favored host of that nest parasite. (eBird)
--------------
Like their cousins, the Yellowheads, these cute little birds prefer forest canopy. This one was part of a small flock actively feeding through the trees and paused briefly to take a look at us.

Via Giulia is a street in the historic centre of Rome, Italy, mostly in rione Regola, although its northern part belongs to rione Ponte. It was one of the first important urban planning projects in Renaissance Rome.
History
The Via Giulia was designed circa 1508 by Pope Julius II but the original plan was only partially carried out. This was the first attempt since Antiquity to pierce a new thoroughfare through the heart of Rome and a very early example of urban renewal. Via Giulia runs from the Ponte Sisto to the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, following the tight curve of the Tiber. In the 16th-century, housing facing the street was favored by borghesi, and specially by the Florentine community in Rome. Today its modest structures provide one of Rome's elite shopping streets, noted for its antique shops.
The Via Giulia runs in a straight line for a full kilometer, an innovation easily taken for granted today. The via was one aspect of Julius' wide-reaching program for the refurbishment of a resurgent Rome and Papal state. His financial reforms, undertaken from the first year of his pontificate, aimed to free the Papacy from its dependence on the great Roman families such as the Orsini and Colonna, and instead relying on Tuscan bankers, notably to Agostino Chigi, member of a banking family of Siena. A part of Julius' overall plan was the reorganization of the medieval city of Rome, whose unrealized assets were becoming apparent as the renewed city grew in economic importance, recovering from the sleepy backwater it had become during the fourteenth century.
The new street was intended as an artery connecting all the governmental institutions, which were crowded in the single section: the Palazzo della Cancelleria, being completed at that very moment, the papal mint and the projected Palazzo dei Tribunali.
The laying-out of the street was placed in the hands of Donato Bramante, who was in charge of the works at the new Basilica of Saint Peter, taking shape on the other side of the river. Vasari states, "The pope was determined to place in Strada Giulia, which was under Bramante's direction, all the offices and administrative seats of power of Rome in one place, for the convenience of those who had business to do there, having been until then constantly much inconvenienced.
At the same time the new artery linked the river port of the Ripa Grande with the new Via della Lungara, and by the Via Giulia to the Ponte Sisto, in order to bring merchandise securely and conveniently to the heart of the marketing and banking zone.
Work was halted on Bramante's majestic Palazzo dei Tribunali, which was to have assembled under one roof all the judicature of Rome. It remained half-built for a generation, to the regret of artists like Vasari. With this an essential element in Julius' urbanistic project was lost.
The street developed as a line of modest houses with gardens behind them, built for private owners or confraternities, sometimes on speculation, broken by more ambitious palazzi. This is the urban context of the "houses of Raphael", with their ground floor street-front shops.
The grand palazzi turned their backs to Via Giulia. In the 1540s Michelangelo had a plan for the constricted gardens of Palazzo Farnese to be connected by a bridge to the Farnese villa in Trastevere on the right bank, Villa Farnesina. The elegant arch still spanning Via Giulia belongs to this other grand unrealized scheme.

Cistus,
Jara or steppe are the common names of various plants, most of the genus Cistus, and some of other genera, such as Halimium. They are usually part, sometimes important, of the Mediterranean garrigas, and some species behave as pioneers in the recovery of degraded soils. They are pyrophytes, their germination is favored by fire, and recurrent fires help their permanence by eliminating competition from other plants that would eventually displace them from biotopes. Some species, such as C ladanifer or C laurifolius are resinous, which favors burning although they are green.
They are always evergreen, shrubby, woody plants. The flowers are regular, hermaphroditic and with five large, often wrinkled petals that easily fall from the flower. Its numerous stamens produce a large amount of pollen, which attracts many insects, such as bees that produce honey from jara. Its fruits are capsules formed by 5 or 10 carpels, which open at maturity in 5 or 10 cavities with numerous seeds. The wood of Cistus ladanifer, being very hard, is used in the manufacture of small tools or parts that are going to suffer great friction, and it is also excellent as firewood.

This pullout on the east side (Cody side) of the long tunnel on the Yellowstone Highway in Shoshone Canyon west of Cody Wyoming is for rock climbers. They come to climb the inner canyon walls which are made up of metamorphic and Igneous rocks that date to around 2.6 billion years ago. Geologist call this time period during the Precambrian the Archean Eon. These rocks represent a time when Wyoming was a separate microcontinent called the Wyoming Craton which existed 500 million years before the North American Continent formed. The layered gneissic complex in Shoshone Canyon consists of hornblende mica schist cut by granodiorite and granite pegmatites. These crystalline rocks are favored by climbers.

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST - ALONE!
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️
16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)
16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)
1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)
7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)
1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:1-13)

This is an odd little pennant of the Southeastern coastal plain that also loves big reservoirs in the North Georgia mountains. They are difficult to shoot because they perch on aquatic grasses over the water - ALWAYS as far out as they can get! Often in the company of (red) Calico pennants. This reservoir has removed their favored big patch of grasses, bringing this guy closer to me. I usually do not see that rustic red wing patch. And you NEVER see a female unless a pair are mating! A few in this population also have wing spots - once considered a subspecies. Lathem reservoir, North Georgia - yesterday

The Wood Stork has many folk names, including Wood Ibis (due to its downcurved, ibis-like bill) and flinthead (for its scaly-looking bare head). The word "wood" probably refers to the bird's favored nesting habitat in lowland wetlands.
The Wood Stork (Mycteria americana) is a large, bald-headed wading bird that stands more than 3 feet (0.9 meters) tall, has a 5 foot (1.5 meter) wing spread, and weighs 4 to 6 pounds (1.8 to 2.7 kg). It is the only stork breeding in the United States and was placed on the Federal Endangered Species list in 1984. The species was down listed from endangered to threatened in June 2014, reflecting a successful conservation and recovery effort spanning three decades.
The Wood Stork serves as an indicator species for restoration of the Everglades ecosystem. Indicator species serve as excellent messengers of the past, present, and future because their specific habitat requirements are so closely associated with one particular environment. The quality and quantity of the required environment directly determines the well-being and the number of that species. Because it is much easier to count and record the biology of one or more indicator species than it is to measure the more complex workings of an ecosystem, close monitoring of carefully selected species provides important information about the health of the entire system.
Wood storks feed on small to medium-sized fish, crayfish, amphibians, and reptiles. Their hunting technique is unique as they will move their partially opened bill through water, snapping up prey when the prey comes in contact with the bill.

I stumbled upon this Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina). While these turtles are among North America's most aquatic, they will still occasionally bask, though this one doesn't look like the most comfortable of fellows. So aquatic are they that they will often have algae growing on their shells, as does this one. Interestingly, snappers are also one of our most hardy creatures, capable of living in highly polluted water and being frozen alive.
Many will remember from childhood that the "proper" way to hold a snapper is by the tail. This was the favored method due to the turtle's long neck, which can quickly bring its biting beak up and around its shell. Unfortunately, holding a snapper by its tail can cause serious internal damage to the poor turtle. So now grabbing the turtle by the back of its shell is the preferred method of moving a snapper. And lady snappers give us plenty of opportunities to do so, as they will often travel long distances to find the perfect spots for egg laying, and there are often many a road between them and that perfect spot!

The brown-hooded parrot (pyrilia haematotis) is a species of bird in subfamily Arinae of the family Psittacidae, the African and New World parrots. It is found from Mexico to Colombia. The brown-hooded parrot forages in the canopy and forest edge. Its diet is mostly fruits and seeds from trees and epiphytes; figs (Ficus) appear to be favored. It has also been observed feeding on mistletoe leaves.

Just behind the Cathedral is the oldest part of Trani’s centro storico and I tried to capture a little of the antiquity you feel from this place even though it is now lit with modern lights as you wander quietly through these streets that have seen so many feet over the centuries.
Trani was in it its golden period in the 11th century when it was a hub for ships and men leaving for the crusades, its position on the Adriatic made it a strategic launching point and being so geographically important also made it favored by the church.
Having the churches blessing at the time all eyes were on the crusades raised the level of importance of Trani so high that all the city states kept offices there and instead of returning empty crafty merchant imported goods for the return trip that made the city amazingly prosperous.
I took this on Sept 18, 2016 with my D750 and Nikon 24-85 f3.5-4.5 Lens at 24mm 13 sec f/22 ISO 200 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , and DXO

Brown-hooded Parrot (Pyrilia haematotis) occurs in humid evergreen and cloud forests, and their borders, and is observed up to at least 1900 m, with some evidence of seasonal, altitudinal migrants. The brown-hooded parrot forages in the canopy and forest edge. Its diet is mostly fruits and seeds from trees and epiphytes, figs appear to be favored. Not globally threatened. Although there must have been a decline from habitat loss, this bird is fairly common over much of range and suffers very little persecution even locally from trapping (Birds of the world).
Nigritella rhellicani (Orchidaceae) 177 21
Nigritella rhellicani (common name: dark vanilla orchid or black vanilla orchid) is a European species of orchid.
This species grows 5–22 centimeters high, with a dense, globose to the cylindrical inflorescence of red-brown to chocolate-brown flowers with a chocolate-like aroma. Some plants, especially in the south of the species' range have noticeably paler flowers
Nigritella rhellicani is indisputably the most widespread and frequently encountered of the seventeen species currently comprising the N. nigra group. Its range takes it from the western Alps, eastwards to the Carpathians, and although unconfirmed, probably into Russia. It can be abundant in its favored locations, where it grows in short alpine turf as low as 1,000 meters up to a recently recorded altitude of over 3,000 meters. N. rhellicani together with N. austriaca are colloquially known as the "Black Vanilla Orchids" and are frequently found growing alongside each other. In typical plants there are easily discerned distinguishing characteristics, unfortunately however the natural variation within both species can often render accurate identification all but impossible except to the professional scientific eye.

The sun comes up and now he can see me, looking at him.
He's hungry and looking for some dead Steelhead or Salmon lying by the river's edge. There was a fish lying there but he was afraid to drop down and eat it because I was watching him.

11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." The Peruvian Paso is a breed of pleasure saddle horse known for its smooth ride. It is distinguished by a uniquely natural gait called the paso llano which is a lateral four beat gait. [...] This characteristic gait was utilized for the purpose of covering long distances over a short period of time without tiring the horse or rider... The gait supplies essentially none of the vertical bounce that is characteristoc of the trot... The rider's back feels no strain or jolt. Hence, this is a favored mount for riders with back trouble.

I’ve posted many images since relocating out here of this Grass Valley historic icon, visible from the center of Grass Valley’s downtown, it’s spire from local freeway California 49, but here in northern California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s the mountains are what dwarfs the building’s not the buildings like in the northeast where I lived most of my life, so it is so different but the beauty is bountiful and sometimes things align at the right time. Walking about with my sweet lady I see where the moon is and the Del Oro Theaters spire and snapped a few images. This is the one l favored the most. #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales #omd @mpbcom @kehcamera #microfourthirds #micro43 #micro43photography @visitgrassvalley @visitcalifornia @nevadacountyca @delorotheatre

The red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a medium-sized hawk. Its breeding range spans eastern North America and along the coast of California and northern to northeastern-central Mexico.
Red-shouldered hawks are permanent residents throughout most of their range, though northern birds do migrate, mostly to central Mexico. The main conservation threat to the widespread species is deforestation.
An eastern population ranges west through southern Canada from southern New Brunswick and Ontario to the eastern edge of the U.S. Great Plains, south to Florida, the Gulf Coast, and eastern Mexico. Only northernmost populations are migratory.
Red-shouldered hawks are forest raptors. In the east, they live in bottomland hardwood stands, flooded deciduous swamps, and upland mixed deciduous–conifer forests. They tend to live in stands with an open subcanopy, which makes hunting easier. They are not exclusively birds of deep forest, though; one can find red-shouldered hawks in some suburban areas where houses or other buildings are mixed into woodlands.
Red-shouldered hawks search for prey while perched on a treetop or soaring over woodlands. When they sight prey, they kill it by dropping directly onto it from the air. When in clearings, they sometimes fly low to surprise prey. Red-shouldered hawks, like most raptors, have very sharp vision and reasonably good hearing, with talons capable of killing animals at least equal to their own size.
Small mammals are typically the most important prey, especially rodents. Voles, gophers, mice, moles and chipmunks may locally be favored based on abundance. Slightly larger mammals, such as rabbits and tree squirrels, are also occasionally preyed on. – Wikipedia
This member of the Corvids Family calls our northern boreal forests home and with their fluffy coats and the ability to store caches of food they can handle our cold Canadian winters quite readily. With their viscous saliva from specialized glands they are capable of coating their food prior to placing it in caches at various sites so it will be preserved until needed.
When feeding they scour the ground as well as vegetation searching for insects, fruit, seeds, fungi, carrion, berries, other birds eggs and even nestlings. Their favored habitat is lichen-festooned boreal forests with a good stand of fir and spruce located anywhere between Alaska and Newfoundland including the Maritime Provinces.
Most of the time they are a quiet species but possess an inquisitive nature and are quite skillful at stealing food if it happens to be handy at picnic sites or campgrounds. Bold and cunning would best describe the way they can glide out of a coniferous stand and raid a campsite. This cunning nature has earned them a few nicknames of which "Whiskey Jack" and "Camp Robbers" are two.
They may start nesting as early as late February in order for the young to be mature enough to be self sufficient in their first cold winter. A nest usually contains 2 - 5 eggs that get incubated for 17 - 22 days.
This adult bird is looking for a handout from any visitors walking the trails in Algonquin Park.
I had posted this picture earlier and erased it because I wanted to fix something about it! Sorry to anyone who commented or favored it earlier! I do that sometimes!!!

Rest Easy, Gotham...Bat Falcon is still on the job.
The first US sighting of a Bat Falcon was documented at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge near Alamo, Texas in mid-December and is still returning to favored perches almost daily as of January 22. On the morning of my visit, the refuge was enveloped in a dense fog: not conducive to bird photography but somehow appropriately bleak for the Dark Knight's return.
Online, you will see the comment "Much more frequently heard than seen" about this bird. I know I have at least two pairs of Wrentits as close neighbors and I hear them all the time, but rarely see them. Quietly observing in their thick brushy favored habitat yielded a shot when one of this pair popped up briefly to look around. This species is monogamous and the mated pair hold a small-ish territory and never perform even short distance migrations. They also have a charming habit of snuggling together on a single branch on cool nights - interweaving their feathers and leaning into each other! If they have fledglings, the whole family will snuggle like this. Would love to see THAT.

“Her eyes were a shade between amber and brown. Her face was scrubbed clean, void of any of the creams that some women favored to add color to their lips and cheeks. She had made no effort to hide the smattering of freckles on her nose, as some women were wont to do. He felt something inside him tighten. Oh, but she was a beauty, a sweet, natural beauty- not perfection. And it was that very unadorned quality that made her more beautiful still.
Little tendrils of hair, the color of chestnuts turning in the sunlight, trailed from her nape and her temples. And there, in front of her ears. It was as if she'd wound her hair in a loose topknot and hadn't given it another thought. He wondered if she was the absentminded sort.”

We have a pair of Black-headed Grosbeaks visiting this season. The female shown here is always a sweetheart at the feeder, politely standing by awaiting her turn.
(Nikon 300/2.8 + TC 2.0, 1/320 sec @ f/8, ISO 400)
Black-headed Grosbeaks' massive bills make them well equipped for cracking seeds, but those beaks are just as useful for snatching and crushing hard-bodied insects or snails. Insects (especially beetles), spiders, and other animals make up about 60% of their breeding-season food. Fruits and seeds make up most of the rest. Berries are a favored food during migration. Among wild fruit, juneberries, poison oak, and elderberries make common meals. Other regular foods include grains like oats and wheat, and weed seeds such as dock, pigweed, chickweed, and bur clover. They also feed on cultivated orchard fruit like figs, mulberries, cherries, apricots, plums, blackberries, and crabapples. In spring and summer, they feed at sunflower seed feeders and at nectar feeders set out for orioles. Where their range overlaps with wintering monarch butterflies, grosbeaks eat large numbers of these insects. Black-headed Grosbeaks don’t seem to suffer from the toxins concentrated in the monarchs’ bodies, which render them inedible to most birds.
Compared to more brightly colored birds, House Finches may seem plain, but this streaky brown finch has an exciting history that began right here in the arid American West. Their natural range included all the Southwest and they favored undisturbed desert, especially areas with stands of cholla cactus. In 1939 a few captive individuals were sold in a pet store in New York City and escaped. These House Finches flourished and spread rapidly. Originally a bird of hot deserts and dry open habitats of the southwest, it now occurs in nearly all types of landscapes and climates in North America, from edges of northern taiga to ocean coasts to metropolitan areas. The extent and intensity of the male’s red plumage is related to the bird’s health, vigor and ability to forage, as they acquire these red pigments from foods they eat that contain carotenoids, such as berries. - IBA

Being a secretive raptor, the red-shouldered hawk avoids the more open areas, which are favored by other hawks, and inhabits the woodlands along streams, river valleys, wet meadows, forested swamps, and damp woods.
In the winter, these raptors focus their hunger on small mammals and the occasional small bird. They typically hunt these warmblooded creatures from a perch.
Italia, Liguria, Riomaggiore (SP), Inverno 2019
A territory in which sea and land are founded forming a unique and evocative area. 18 kilometers of rocky coastline abounding with abundant bays, beaches, and deep sea, surrounded by mountains running parallel to the coast. Terracings cultivated with vineyards and olives, kept under control by old dry stone walls. A naturalistic heritage of great variety. Paths and mule tracks look onto breathtaking views. Five villages, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso face onto the sea.
We have the first news of Riomaggiore only in 1251, when the inhabitants of the district of Carpena, spread coast, swore faith to the Republic of Genova. Between 1200 and 1300 the inhabitants of these settlements decided to go down towards the sea and give life to the village. A movement which was favored by the consolidation of the Genovese rule which consented to more tranquil access to the sea on which commerce could develop quickly and safely.
