I took Julie to see the Mammoth Earthquake Fault, and I was disappointed to discover that one can no longer climb down inside without crossing little fences. It used to be totally open.
This fence atop the San Andreas fault, separated during the 1906 earthquake, when at this spot the earth moved 16 feet.
These calcite veins are within a complex fault zone in the Greenbrier Limestone, Greenbrier Co., WV. Outcrop is 1 mile west of Lewisburg on north side of I-64.
The depressions and offset ridge in today's VIS image are evidence of faulting in this region of Sinai Dorsa. The scene here measures 17 x 63 kilometers (11 x 39 miles).

The cave was dug open by a motley assortment of local cavers and WVACS members. My only involvement was surveying the cave and drawing the map. The cave is very complex with much breakdown.

Shot from a boat on the Bosporus, above the faultline between Asia and Europe. Both shores were filmed simultaneously with mirrors at 90 degrees in front of the lens. The rocking of the boat makes the continents rub against each other, like in an earthquake. East and West struggle to form one horizon.
While walking along the beach, I discovered a prominent fault exposed in the rocks along the buff. The sedimentary layers are offset with the thin-bedded grey shales on the left side dropping down in relation to the thick-bedded orange sandstone on the right side.
Here you can see the marks made by rocks sliding along a fault. These features, called slickensides, are polished striated rock surfaces caused by one rock mass moving across another on a fault. The quarter is there for scale.
Looking down toward the entrance of Arches National Park, a couple miles north of Moab. The Moab Fault runs along the road, and over the course of a few hundred thousand years, the cliffs on the near side of the road have sunk nearly 200 metres below the equivalent rock layers on the far side of the road.
Thrust faults are low-angle reverse faults, involving upward movement of the hanging wall and downward movement of the footwall. The fault planes of thrust faults are supposed to be less than 30 degrees from the horizontal, as seen in cross-section. Thrust faults, and reverse faults in general, form by compressional stress - they are common in mountain belts.
The light-colored rocks in the upper thrust plate are part of the basal Dunham Dolostone (upper Lower Cambrian). The gray-colored rocks in the lower thrust plate are part of the Iberville Formation (Middle Ordovician). The rocks look like shales, but they're not - they're intensely calcite-veined, dark gray lime mudstones (probably argillaceous).
Normally, one would not expect older rocks above younger rocks - that's an apparent violation of the Principle of Superposition. However, the principle only applies to non-disturbed/deformed rocks.
The Champlain Thrust Fault was active during the Taconic Orogeny, an Ordovician to Silurian mountain-building event involving the collision of a volcanic island arc with Laurentia (= the North American paleocontinent). The fault zone was also active during the subsequent Acadian Orogeny (Silurian to Devonian).
