No, that is not San Andreas Fault, the well known earth quake fault in California. Or it's not a lava crack on a volcano. It's the crack on my dirty foot or heel. It's ugly but I don't have money to see a foot doctor to fix the problem. Usually I just take a knife and scrape out those thick skin on my feet.
This is a photograph from the 60th Anniversary Commerative Half Marathon for Tullamore Harriers AC which was held on Saturday 31st August 2013 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland at 12:00. This was a really great event and there couldn't be any fault found with any aspect of the race. There were stewarts all along the route, 3 drink stations with bottled water, superb facilities, and great after-race refreshments. The stewards along the route provided great encouragement to all of the runners. Tullamore Harriers and the local community really worked together to make this is a wonderful event.

This race celebrates the 60th Anniversary (a Diamond Anniversary) of the foundation of Tullamore Harriers AC. The club was formed in the town in November 1953. However, it was almost 1979 before facilities close to what we see today open in the present day site. Over 50 provincial and national athletics meetings are held at Tullamore Harriers every year. The facilities available combined with it's central geographical location joing routes from North, South, East, and West make it a very attractive venue. The race today brings competitive national road racing back to The Harriers. In the past there was the famous Quinnlan Cup
Festival of Races (see a link below for some nostalgia) which was one of Ireland's Blue Ribband events. Today, the facilities at Tullamore Harriers are the envy of many athletics clubs in Ireland. The facilities provided by Tullamore make it one of the premier venues for local and national level athletics in Ireland. There is an Olympic standard tartan track, a fully equipped gym, changing facilities, press and media facilities, meeting room spaces, etc. The club also provides a social center and niteclub which makes "The Harriers" a very well known on the local social scene. Esssentially, the town of Tullamore would be a different place if it weren't for the presence of Tullamore Harriers AC.
Overall Race Summary
Participants: There was about 500 participants of runners, joggers, and walkers.
Weather: The midday start seen warm pleasant conditions for running. The layout of the course meant that there was a stiff breeze into the face of competitors for the first few miles. When the race turned around to return to Tullamore the wind was more favourable to runners.
Course: The race starts on the Charleville Road just outside the entrance to Tullamore Harriers. The race proceeds south along the R421 and onto the N52 before taking a route onto local back roads. The race then completes a large rural road route before it joins to the R421 again and the final 1.5 miles are the same as the first mile of the race. The runners enter tullamore stadium and complete one lap of the tartan track before the finish line. The course is challenging in places with some undulations along the route. But overall it is fair course.

Refreshments: There was a very impressive selection of refreshments including sandwiches, cakes, home-made breads, etc in the Harriers clubhouse afterwards. People were able to enjoy their post race refreshments outside in the warm pleasant sunshine.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. Reverse fault in inch-scale layered plagioclase feldspar & pyroxene in the Precambrian of Montana, USA.
Southern Montana’s Beartooth Mountains has one of the few platinum mines in North America. There, platinum and palladium are mined from the 2.71 billion-years-old Stillwater Complex, a classic example of an LLI (large, layered igneous province). LLIs are large intrusive bodies that display large-scale and small-scale layering, even including cross bedding, ripples, graded bedding, channelforms, and other sedimentary-like features. The Stillwater originated as a large subsurface mass of slowly cooling magma. As various minerals crystallized, they settled to the bottom of the magma chamber - this resulted in layering. Igneous rocks that formed this way have a cumulate texture. Currents in the still-liquid portions of the magma chamber produced the sedimentary structures mentioned above. Most of the Stillwater displays only large-scale layering.
The rocks in the Stillwater are mafic and ultramafic, intrusive igneous rocks. Common lithologies include gabbro, norite, harzburgite, anorthosite, troctolite, chromitite, pyroxenite, and dunite. Portions of the Stillwater have been metamorphosed. Olivine is the most commonly altered component - it's usually been metamorphosed to serpentine.
The main platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) occurrence is in the Johns-Manville Reef (J-M Reef), an interval in the lower part of the Lower Banded Series. The Pt and Pd occur in intercumulate sulfides, typically pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). Platinum ores in the J-M Reef are principally sulfidic anorthosites, but other lithologies also occur. The J-M Reef is the highest grade deposit known for platinum-group elements (PGEs).
The outcrop seen here does not have platinum ore. The layering consists of alternating bands of plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene. The layering was originally horizontal; Stillwater Complex rocks have been structurally tilted by mountain building.
The band from lower left to upper right is a reverse fault. The fault zone has drag folds above and below that show the sense of displacement.

Trying to get psyched up. I fly out to Michigan tomorrow, to finish up my thesis writing with my advisor, and then gear up for my defense a couple of months later.
This line is where the Pacific plate is going up and the North American plate down, the Tetons are getting higher and the next earthquake will push them higher still.

- NORTHERN DEFENCES GEOLOGICAL FAULT AND JOINTS -
After the capture of Gibraltar in 1704, the British exploited the natural platforms flanking the northern approaches to the Rock using much of the geographical landscape to their military advantage. Thomas James, a Royal Artillery officer stationed on Gibraltar from 1749 to 1755, was the first member of the British garrison to publish geological observations on the Rock.
James describes ''six pieces of cannon mounted in (King’s Lines) and two mortars, with the advantage of a natural cave that is capable of securing one hundred men from shot and shells, with a smaller one for stores, and a covered communication, which you ascend through a chasm in the rock, by a broad wooden ladder of twenty-six steps to the prince’s line, and forty-four stone ones. This work was finished in one thousand seven hundred and fifteen''.
It is clear that the British were using caves and natural rock faults as part of the Northern Defences from a very early stage, but it was not until after the Great Siege building on the success of the Great Siege Galleries that the soldier artificers turned their attention to excavate new galleries and tunnels in this area. Most of these works were carried out between 1787-1790.
One of the areas excavated and which revealed a number of natural caves was the rocky outcrop around a natural fault named the Orillon which divided the 18th Century King’s and Queen’s Lines. The base of the natural fault was covered by the Inundation, an artificial lake created to obstruct landward access to Gibraltar. The Orillon batteries were part of a three-storey gun position within a natural fault in the Rock.
G. M. Goodwin gives the best account of this complex - ''This gallery leads into a fairly large chamber which, according to the 1819 report, was a second Orillon Battery. Into the walls of this emplacement, a few feet up, have been cut two wide ledges. These supported large wooden planks, which formed a platform for a gun and was called the Third Orillon Battery. A fourth Orillon Battery existed on the roof above the third, and a wooden staircase, in the recess of the rock behind, established communication between the second, third and fourth batteries. From what was the third Orillon Battery, a small gallery in the rock behind communicates with Queen's Gallery East, near the loopholed wall. In later years, the second Orillion was used as a bake house but the ovens have now been removed. Steps from the second Orillon lead down to a cave where three guns were mounted, forming the first Orillon Battery. At the back of the cave is a small shelter or magazine''.
The Queen’s Gallery, cut in 1789, was further divided into three parts; Queen's Gallery East, Queen's Gallery South West and Queen's Lines Gallery. A natural cave was found in Queen’s Gallery East next to Forbe’s Shaft. The Star Chamber was formerly a natural cave, extended in 1790. It is reached from Prince's Lines by an overhead staircase but the bottom steps are now 70 feet above the floor level. This cave was literally and organisationally at the centre of the tunnelling operations of the late 18th century by the Soldier Artificer Company (later the Royal Engineers).
During World War Two the tunnels were still being used and brick buildings were constructed within the cave and galleries. A sign on the wall of the cave records that in 1941 this cave was the King's Regiment Battalion Headquarters. Immediately to the North of the Star Chamber is another smaller cave formation called St. Patricks Chamber which in turn leads to a number of other natural caves which were named as Common’s Hall, Raleigh Gallery and 2nd and 3rd Orillon Batteries. North of St. Patrick’s Chamber further tunnelling revealed a deep fissure which was found to part of the natural fault line leading to the Orillon. Water along this fault line exited at the Orillon as a natural spring. This natural cave was named Smart’s Well Reserve.

Location is in a steep eroded ravine north of the abandoned coal and sand mines at the ghost mining town site of Tesla in Corral Hollow Canyon east of Livermore, CA, USA.
This is right out of central-casting for an earthquake movie. The fissure was made as a result of several seismic events during the eruption of the Inyo Craters just 2000-3000 years ago.
