This is a photograph from the 60th Anniversary Commerative Half Marathon for Tullamore Harriers AC which was held on Saturday 31st August 2013 in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ireland at 12:00. This was a really great event and there couldn't be any fault found with any aspect of the race. There were stewarts all along the route, 3 drink stations with bottled water, superb facilities, and great after-race refreshments. Tullamore Harriers and the local community really worked together to make this is a wonderful event.

This race celebrates the 60th Anniversary (a Diamond Anniversary) of the foundation of Tullamore Harriers AC. The club was formed in the town in November 1953. However, it was almost 1979 before facilities close to what we see today open in the present day site. Over 50 provincial and national athletics meetings are held at Tullamore Harriers every year. The facilities available combined with it's central geographical location joing routes from North, South, East, and West make it a very attractive venue. The race today brings competitive national road racing back to The Harriers. In the past there was the famous Quinnlan Cup
Festival of Races (see a link below for some nostalgia) which was one of Ireland's Blue Ribband events. Today, the facilities at Tullamore Harriers are the envy of many athletics clubs in Ireland. The facilities provided by Tullamore make it one of the premier venues for local and national level athletics in Ireland. There is an Olympic standard tartan track, a fully equipped gym, changing facilities, press and media facilities, meeting room spaces, etc. The club also provides a social center and niteclub which makes "The Harriers" a very well known on the local social scene. Esssentially, the town of Tullamore would be a different place if it weren't for the presence of Tullamore Harriers AC.
Overall Race Summary
Participants: There was about 500 participants of runners, joggers, and walkers.
Weather: The midday start seen warm pleasant conditions for running. The layout of the course meant that there was a stiff breeze into the face of competitors for the first few miles. When the race turned around to return to Tullamore the wind was more favourable to runners.
Course: The race starts on the Charleville Road just outside the entrance to Tullamore Harriers. The race proceeds south along the R421 and onto the N52 before taking a route onto local back roads. The race then completes a large rural road route before it joins to the R421 again and the final 1.5 miles are the same as the first mile of the race. The runners enter tullamore stadium and complete one lap of the tartan track before the finish line. The course is challenging in places with some undulations along the route. But overall it is fair course.

Refreshments: There was a very impressive selection of refreshments including sandwiches, cakes, home-made breads, etc in the Harriers clubhouse afterwards. People were able to enjoy their post race refreshments outside in the warm pleasant sunshine.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. Faults are quite common in orogenic belts. Faults are defined as fractures in rocks along which differential displacement has occurred. Dip-slip faults are those involving movement of rocks in non-horizontal directions. Strike-slip faults involve movement of rocks in horizontal directions.
The two common types of dip-slip faults are normal faults and reverse faults. Normal faults form by extensional stress. Reverse faults form by compressional stress.

Normal fault in Colorado, USA.
This is an outcrop in the Turkey Creek Watergap southeast of the town of Morrison, Colorado. The lighter-colored rocks are sandstones of the South Platte Formation (Dakota Group, Lower Cretaceous). The dark-colored rocks at top are part of the Mowry Shale (also Cretaceous).
The fracture from ~upper left to right is a normal fault. It is not a major Laramide structure, but rather a relaxation feature. Faults are fractures in rocks along which there's been differential displacement (offset). The block of rocks above the fault is referred to as the hanging wall. Below the fault is the footwall. If the hanging wall has been offset downward, the fracture is a normal fault, which forms by extensional stress.
Locality: roadcut along the southern side of Turkey Creek Road through Turkey Creek Watergap, ~2.9 km southeast of the town of Morrison, Jefferson County, north-central Colorado, USA (39° 38' 05.67" North latitude, 105° 10' 07.44" West longitude)
Apparent normal fault in the Madera Limestone sequence along New Mexico Highway 337 south of I-40 and Tijeras. Movement down to the left and drag on beds suggest a normal fault but closer inspection shows strike-slip slickensides.

The San Andreas fault lies in a long, linear trough on the San Francisco peninsula, as do Upper and Lower Crystal Springs Reservoirs and San Andreas Lake (the namesake for the fault). Pilarcitos Lake lies along another fault-related trough along the San Francisco peninsula, but it hosts the Pilarcitos fault. The Pilarcitos fault was the main plate-boundary fault until it rotated so far out of an orientation subparallel to the plate motions that the fault 'stepped' over to the current San Andreas fault position.

Notice the difference in the color of the soil. Darker soil is older. The right section tends to sink faster than the darker section, so it shows the younger soil.

This fault is adjacent to the San Andreas Fault and part of the complex. My location is probably not quite spot on. It's with in a mile and in the right canyon, at least.

The Carrizo Plain is a large enclosed grassland plain, approximately 50 miles (80 km) long and up to 15 miles (24 km) across, in southeastern San Luis Obispo County, California, about 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Los Angeles.[4] It contains the 246,812-acre (99,881 ha)[2] Carrizo Plain National Monument, and it is the largest single native grassland remaining in California. It includes Painted Rock in the Carrizo Plain Rock Art Discontiguous District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2012 it was further designated a National Historic Landmark due to its archeological value. The San Andreas Fault cuts across the plain."

The History of Onllwyn Colliery.
Small scale working of coal from the many outcropping seams (for local use, heating and lime burning) has been undertaken in the Onllwyn area for centuries and may even go as far back to the Roman period when there was an auxiliary fort at Coelbren (c.73-78AD)
The colliery had many entrances, the larger of which No1 was situated in the village of Onllwyn and No3 was situated in the village of Banwen, both in the Dulais Valley.
Onllwyn No3 was originally known as Maes-Y-Marchog Colliery, which worked the 18'-0", Cornish, 9'-0" and Brass seams to the east of the Glyncorrwg fault, (pre-1900) it is unclear when it became known as Onllwyn No3, but locally it was always known as Banwen Colliery.
The area is dissected by two large faults, to the east is the Glyncorrwg fault, which downthrows 100m west, to the west is the Pwllau Bach fault (AKA Pentreclwydau fault), this also down throws approximately 65m to the west.
The history of the mine owes it origin with the technological advancements in iron smelting, (hot blast technique) which had allowed the use of anthracite coal in the iron making process, this created a demand for coal in the area and with John Christie building the Brecon Forest Tramroad c1821, which was extended to the nearby Drym Colliery (situated on the common to the north of Onllwyn, remains of which can still be seen adjacent to the road leading to Coelbren)
Josepth Claypon, the operator of Drym Colliery had contracted in September 1834 to supply coal to the Brecon Forest Tramroad Company, due to the geological conditions at Drym, Claypon was virtually forced to open a new mine at Onllwyn to meet his obligations to Brecon Forest Tramroad Company
On the 23 May 1835 an estimate of the costs of opening a colliery on Capel Hanbury Leigh's land at Onllwyn was prepared. By 16th June 1835 a new level was being opened on the site which was to become Onllwyn Colliery, by the 2nd September the new level had hit 'convulsed ground', Joseph Claypon's agent Gabell had the notion of giving up the colliery. All tram plates were taken out of the mine and then put back in again, and development recommenced.
Workable seams could not be found, therefore to meet contractual obligations Claypon was forced to pay the colliers at Drym Colliery and extra £15-16 extra each month 'as long as they work under water' so that enough coal was mined in the first three months of 1836
It was anticipated that by July 1836 the mine would be ready to supply coal, but by this date Claypon's agent Gabell was alarmed that coal had still not been found in 'a regular course'
by June of 1836, Claypon had decided to drive a shaft beyond the limit of the existing drift, (location uncertain) at a depth of 11m coal 1m thick was found, this it was believed was a seam just above the 9ft seam, in fact the 9ft vein lay well beneath the drift. What he had found was part of the 18ft seam which at that point was split in to 3 seams. A second level was started some 500m up the valley, by 1st June 1836 the second level had been driven in 132m and had some time after this intercepted a very good coal that ranged from 1.35m to 3.66m, this was determined to be the 18ft seam and not the 9ft seam.
By 1837 the output was estimated to be around 5,182 tonnes, which may have been used at Ynysgedwyn Ironworks.
By 1838 the 9ft seam had been found and brought in to production.
In September 1840 John Williams and John Jones had taken a sub-lease on the colliery, the output had almost quadrupled by 1842-43 and Williams brought two iron-furnaces in to blast on the Colliery site in February 1844. The furnaces would have been provided coal and at least some iron-ore from Onllwyn Colliery.
A sizeable coal trade soon built up with coal being taken to Swansea Canal via the tramroad for export to Swansea.

Production was coming from the 9ft seam, via the shaft in the eastern drift
In 1848-49 the coal from Onllwyn Colliery was being sold in Sennybridge for 12s a tonne, with production costs at 1s.4d. and transport costs at 5s.5d., then there was a possible profit 6s.7d.
In 1848 the Iron Works at Banwen were nearing completion, this created a further demand for coal from Onllwyn, it was estimated that the annual production of pig-iron would be 2,440 tonnes.
For an average weekly output of 47 tonnes of pig-iron, from a 10.36m high blast furnace the following were used: 83 tonnes of Anthracite; 36 tonnes of limestone; 106 tonnes of calcined ironstone; 25 tonnes of Anthracite for the boilers of the blast engine and 25 tonnes for the stoves of one furnace. (calculated by a Gentleman managing Iron Works near the Banwen Property)
Therefore, just for Banwen ironworks alone there was an increased demand of 6'900 tonnes of coal per annum.
In 1851 the colliery was valued at £450
Between 1851 and 1861 two rows of iron workers' houses were built, (Back Row & Front Row) each equipped with ovens cast at the attendant works, of the 140 men living in these houses, 72 worked in the colliery, 40 in the ironworks, 19 in the iron ore mines and 9 on the tramroad.
In approximately 1864 the Dulais Valley Mineral Railway was completed up to Onllwyn, this was the beginning of the end for ironworking at Onllwyn and by c.1870 production had ceased.
Sometime in the 1870's the mine was taken over by the Evans-Bevan family who owned the colliery up until Nationalisation in 1947.
In 1940 an small level known as Rhas Colliery was opened in what is now Onllwyn Washery, to work the Bluers Seam just south of the village of Dyffryn Cellwen.
Accidents
9th June 1896 a fatal accident occurred to Wm Rees Davies, whilst engaged at his duties underground, was run over by a journey of trams and died within 10 minutes of the occurrence.
8th July 1898 John Miles Edwards (25) suffocated whilst going to get a shovel (from Harry Bach’s Heading) killed by blackdamp.
12th September 1900 Morgan Howells (21) single, 5 Front Row, Onllwyn, was killed almost instantaneously at the local colliery on Tuesday by a heavy fall of coal.
20th January 1902 David Lloyd (21) and Charles Betterson (55) killed by runaway journey of full drams.
23rd December 1904 While engaged in blasting operations underground on Tuesday morning Wm. Owen (25 of Dudley Street, Neath, was severely injured by an explosion, causing shocking injuries to his face, arms and legs.
29th June 1906 David Williams was severely burnt and many others had a narrow escape from an explosion of gas.
1st November 1906 Hopkin Harris (19) seriously injured by a fall of stone from the roof, it took 3 men to remove the stone.
2nd October 1916 Willie Jones, Front Row, Onllwyn, met with a serious accident while following his employment at the Colliery, he was knocked down by a journey of trams which resulted in severe injuries to his legs.
23rd September 1907 Patrick Norris died of injuries sustained by an explosion at the colliery, Norris is the third victim of this regrettable accident.
May 1918 Tom Williams, Gordon-terrace, Onllwyn, had his foot amputated as the result of an unspecified accident at the colliery.

On the 4th April 1964 the then National Coal Board closed the mine.
When added together the total thickness of the coal seams worked at Onllwyn Colliery varies between 7.2m and 12.1m.
After nearly 200 years since the arrival of the tram road that allowed for industrial production levels Onllwyn village still continues to produce coal, thus making Onllwyn one of the last villages in the United Kingdom to rely on coal as its main employer.

However, fear not friends, the car seems to be running fine. I booked it in to the garage for Friday but by Wednesday it had sorted itself out :)
This normal fault with minor offset is in the road cut for I-40 as it passes through Kingman Arizona
California Interstate 5 & Pyramid Lake sit right on the San Andreas Fault line, as the primary tangent turns from the Central Coast to the Mojave Desert. The landscape is evident of this all over the lake shore. Angeles National Forest covers this region and eastward, and Los Padres National Forest to the westside of the lake.

Jill (L) and Francesco walk through the development. Much of this was not built to anti-seismic standards even though located less than three hundred metres from a large normal fault in a seismically active area.
Earthquake damage is not visible in this view but can be seen in other pictures in this set. Jill and Francesco are walking towards the active fault plane (see below, and note on picture).

GEOLOGICAL NOTES
In Google Maps Satellite View (and less clearly in the lower resolution Flickr Satellite View), the active fault line runs across this view between the apartment blocks and the NW-SE ridge of higher wooded and rocky ground behind them (see note), and parallel to the main road behind us (via Antica Arischia). The block directly in front was relatively undamaged but the next photo shows large crack pattern in its rear wall.
"The 2009 L'Áquila earthquake occurred in the region of Abruzzo, in central Italy. The main shock occurred at 3:32 local time on 6 April 2009, and was rated 5.8 on the Richter scale and 6.3 on the moment magnitude scale; its epicentre was near L'Áquila, the capital of Abruzzo, which together with surrounding villages [like Pettino here] suffered most damage. There have been several thousand foreshocks and aftershocks since December 2008, more than thirty of which had a Richter magnitude greater than 3.5. The earthquake was felt throughout central Italy; 308 people are known to have died, making this the deadliest earthquake to hit Italy since the 1980 Irpinia earthquake."

According to our geological friends in this area, it is well established that there is an approximately 100-year cycle of earthquakes in the L'Áquila region, and the timing of this one fits with this cycle. Tectonically, this part of the Apennines is in a tensional regime dominated by normal block faulting, and the earthquake was generated along normal faults in and around L'Áquila.

Faults are quite common in orogenic belts. Faults are defined as fractures in rocks along which differential displacement has occurred. Dip-slip faults are those involving movement of rocks in non-horizontal directions. Strike-slip faults involve movement of rocks in horizontal directions.
The two common types of dip-slip faults are normal faults and reverse faults. Normal faults form by extensional stress. Reverse faults form by compressional stress.

The North Anatolian Fault (NAF) (Turkish: Kuzey Anadolu Fay Hattı) is a major active right lateral-moving geologic fault in northern Anatolia which runs along the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Anatolian Plate. The fault extends westward from a junction with the East Anatolian Fault at the Karliova Triple Junction in eastern Turkey, across northern Turkey and into the Aegean Sea. It runs about 20 km south of Istanbul.
The East Anatolian Fault runs in a northeasterly direction, starting from the Maras Triple Junction at the northern end of the Dead Sea Transform, and ending at the Karliova Triple Junction where it meets the North Anatolian Fault.
