夜のロープウェイも魅力的な風景でした。

The ropeway at night was also a fascinating landscape.

I think that the beauty of the Fly Agaric toadstool is one of the most fascinating things in nature. The perfection of a bright red globe covered in pure white spots of the unopened cap or finding a mushroom the size of a dinner plate all red and spoty. Early this morning I cycled to an outlier of Blean Woods, a small sand and gravel hillock covered in ancient oaks and one of the best places I know for Fly Agarics. With the low Autumnal sun cascading on these just opened orange variation of Amanita's in a pool of amber light....

Fascinating to watch this female Marsh Harrier flying down into the reeds in one spot and coming up again many times. Maybe prospecting for a nest site or had some food there? (Heavily cropped )

Ok, parties of geologists come to places like this on holiday. I overheard one of the group leaders saying that the beach is littered with stuff that was spat out by the volcanoes across the sea in Skye. A while ago. So whilst there are plumes of dark volcanic rock thrusting out of the coast, this end of the beach is covered in green algae pebbles and rocks where the freshwater river flows out to the sea, but further back where the sand is pale and fine, is where the black volcanic grit, washed out of the surrounding mountains flows over the 'white' seashell sand to make all the patterns I show elsewhere in my photostream. The shoreline is quite steep, with a deep heap of granite pebbles of varying colours and strata, that rolls back and forward with the tides and sometimes thunderous Atlantic waves crashing into the bay.

This is a stitched image of nine frames that didn't quite join up as wonderfully as I had hoped, but you get the picture. Nice grey, cloudy sky. End of the track, fabulous isolated back o'beyond holiday home on the Ardnamurchan Estate at Fascadale, fully equipped with jump leads.

I don't know what happened here, but something appears to have gone terribly wrong.

In western Switzerland lies the fascinating Etang de la Gruère. It's a small moorland lake. A boardwalk leads around the encircle it. It had snowed recently, and I set off very early to experience the sunrise there. As I got out of the car, I thought: It's really cold here – probably around -2 or -3 degrees Celsius!

Photographing with my analog large-format camera was, as always, a wonderful experience. I really got into the flow and just kept taking pictures – in the end, I had a whopping six shots. A great result for me – if only my feet hadn't gotten so cold. Back in the car, I looked at the thermometer – -13 degrees Celsius! Two pairs of socks would have been appropriate!

karmann ghia history

After the War…

After the end of World War II, and for many – the Great Depression, the world was slowly beginning to recover. Over the next decade, people saw a steady increase in income and subsequently, the world saw more demand for the concept of “getting more for one’s money”. Particularly in the automotive world, there was a dire lack in vehicles that were anything but ‘simple and functional’. Cue, an emergence of flagship cars from auto companies such as Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Ford.

Volkswagen in particular at that time were marketing fairly well in small and efficient cars – the Beetle and the Bus – and had built quite the reputation for being reliable, so they wanted a model to be rather more of an “image car”. Through the desire of W. Karmann GmbH, producers of the Beetle Cabriolet for VW, the Karmann Ghia concept was born.

Chrysler contracted with the Italian styling and coach building firm of, aptly named, Ghia, to build a series of “image cars”. Some of these cars were ultimately produced, but one car that did not make it to production ended up benefiting Volkswagen substantially. That car would eventually become the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. While Chrysler worked with Ghia, Volkswagen contracted with the German coach builder, Karmann to build their “image” car, and Karmann, in need of a design, approached Ghia and somehow the old Chrysler design resurfaced and was modified to fit the floorpan of the VW Beetle.

The Karmann Ghia was first designed by Italian coach-builder Carrozzeria Ghia in the early 1950s. It was a joint project with German car manufacturer Volkswagen, who provided the chassis and mechanical components. The car’s design was intended to be a sleek and stylish sports car, with a low-slung body, curved roofline, and distinctive rear end.

The first Karmann Ghia prototypes were created in 1953, and the car went into production in 1955. It was manufactured by Wilhelm Karmann GmbH at their factory in Osnabrück, Germany. Often dubbed the “poor man’s Porsche”, the Karmann Ghia was based on the Volkswagen Beetle, but it had a distinctive body design that set it apart from its more utilitarian counterpart.

In 1969, the Karmann Ghia was named one of the most beautifully designed products in the world, and it is good to see that that still holds up for many people today!

Popularity and Legacy of the Karmann Ghia

The Karmann Ghia was an instant success when it was first introduced, especially amongst starry-eyed Americans who wanted to cruise around in something cool. It was stylish, affordable, and fun to drive, and it quickly became a favourite of car enthusiasts around the world. Over the years, the car went through several design changes and upgrades, including a larger rear window, a longer wheelbase, and more powerful engines.

The first Karmann Ghia prototypes were created in 1953, and the car was in production from 1955 until 1974, with a total of over 445,000 units manufactured.

Today, it remains an iconic and highly sought-after classic car, with an incredibly loyal following.

Technical Specifications of the Karmann Ghia

The Karmann Ghia was powered by an air-cooled, rear-mounted engine, with displacement ranging from 1.2 to 1.6 litres, and horsepower ranging from 30 to 60. The car had a top speed of around 90 miles per hour and was equipped with a four-speed manual transmission. It was also known for its excellent handling and manoeuvrability, making it a joy to drive on winding roads.

In Conclusion…

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a true classic of the automotive world, with a rich history and enduring legacy. From its distinctive design and production to its enduring popularity and loyal fanbase, this car has captured the hearts and imaginations of car enthusiasts around the world. Whether you’re a collector, an enthusiast, or simply a fan of classic cars, the small and loveable Karmann Ghia is a car that is sure to impress.

Sorry for shooting dragonflies again and again, but they are so fascinating...

It's always fascinating how all react differently to snow.

Some hate it and get surprised by the fact it´s snowing every winter, others embrace it with joy.

RKO_6905. From the archives. When scrolling through my archive I found this nice shot. Looking at the image I wonder why I din't take a landscape shot with some more space at the side of its head.....😏

I should have asked her what she was thinking while looking at the painting.

appreciating the beauty of everything...comes from the heart...

This waterfall in the southwest of Iceland is located 1,5 kilometer downstream from the famous Brúarfoss.

The impressive turquoise water drops here into a small canyon of black lava rocks.

Fascinating looking at all the moss and other fauna thriving on the stumps of old trees.

After you were able to briefly get to know this impressive place yesterday in the video (only on Facebook and Instagram), you can now also see it in a photo. This gives you time to take a look at the fascinating details in peace.

The Rock Gate in the valley Uttewalder Grund is one of the places in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains that the painter Caspar David Friedrich was particularly fond of. In the summer of 1800 he even spent a whole week alone here "among the rocks and fir trees" (as he later reported to a friend).

A year later he published a drawing of the Rock Gate, which can now be viewed in the Folkwang Museum in Essen.

I have to admit that I feel a little uneasy every time I walk through this narrow opening (after all, at its narrowest point it is only about 60 cm wide and about 1.70 meters high). If you then imagine the weight hanging above you, wedged between the two rock walls, it can cause slight anxiety.

It is simply amazing to see these cross sections of now rock and immediately recognize that they were once trees. Apparently, cutting the agatized trees is even more difficult and time consuming than cutting marble. Not sure how this was accomplished in 900 AD.

When you are kicked out of your routine by something complicated, fragile, marvellous, something you can not really explain. Something that does not even need your explanation. Something that comes from the outside but sticks into your world and is oblivious to your rationality. It transcends it. It goes beyond it. You can "take" the sunflower, you can "have" it, but you will never "be" the sunflower. It is and remains marvellous. Sony A7iii plus Helios 44M-7 at F11.

Observing pelicans do their morning workouts is akin to watching a laid-back aerobics class for birds. It's both hilarious and fascinating!

Let me tell you the fascinating and dramatic story of this bird island on the west coast of Norway. In the year 1725 a ship from the Netherlands descended here. The ship was loaded with gold. The gold treasure was later found by divers. The island "Runde" has only 150 inhabitants. But every summer, more than 500,000 seabirds come here to nest. And tourists from all over Europe come here, either to experience this adventure or to find remnants of the gold treasure... Thanks for your visit and comments, my Flickr friends. I hope you're all staying safe and healthy. Enjoy your summer):

Walking from yesterdays hike in the dark was so nice in the moonlight

It's alwasy fascinating how beautiful the moonlight is and the urge to capture it is always huge

We saw that we didn't manage to capture its beauty so we stopped and just admired it

But here it is, not too bad for my first hike with my new camera

I have lots to learn and find out what this camera can do, it sure is different from my D7200

Clouds in front of us, the sun setting behind the clouds, the beloved Mediterranean underneath us, attached with the sky like one divine piece of art, what possibly could be more fascinating?

If you looked closely to the sea in the bottom right corner you can actually see the waves look so cute and little from that height :)

Oh the Mediterranean, how much I love it!

There is something I find fascinating about Holy Island the same as I do about the Isles of Scilly off of Cornwall when we have visited there, maybe it`s the thought of a community in some form of isolation when tide and weather come together to prohibit travel to and from an Island.

Or maybe it`s just the beauty of the place in particular the 16th century castle of Lindisfarrne which towers above the Island and can be seen from all directions.

The castle is run by the National Trust so if you are a member you can visit for free and there is also holiday accommodation there.

This is a five shot focus stack, I could have got by with maybe one shot but just to be safe I did the focus stack.

I did another focus stack from a little further back to take in another Iron ring the same as in my foreground, I`ll show that in due course.

We were lucky as it was not too busy, there is only a six hour window when you can cross the Causway at low tide so visitors flock in at much the same time after reading the tide advice, I would love to see this at high tide but you would have to be prepared to either stay overnight in one of the pubs or guest houses or just hang about for six hours and wait for the next low tide.

To shoot a sunrise from there would be rather nice I think, not sure I could persuade Jane to venture all the way back up there again it`s over 400 miles from our home on the South Coast.

Many more images to come from here .
