The Nēnē, or Hawaiian Goose (Branta sandvicensis), has one of the most fascinating ecological and conservation stories in the avian world.

Evolutionary History & Island Life

Canada Goose Ancestry:

DNA studies show the Nēnē evolved from Canada Geese that flew to the islands roughly 500,000 years ago.

No Long Migrations:

Unlike their North American relatives, the Hawaiian Goose is non-migratory. It stays on the islands year-round.

Lava Terrain Adapters: Their feet are only semi-palmated (half-webbed). The webbing has shrunk over millennia to expose longer, independent toes with rugged pads, giving them the grip needed to navigate jagged, cooled volcanic plains (kīpuka).

Flight and Altitude:

While they spend most of their time walking on land, they are fully capable of flight. They can be found from sea level up to volcanic heights of 8,000 feet.

Diet and Hydration

True Herbivores:

They do not forage in water like ducks. Instead, they graze strictly on land, eating the leaves, flowers, seeds, and berries of over 50 native and introduced plant species.

Volcanic Survival:

Because standing water is scarce on porous volcanic rock, they have adapted to pull almost all of their daily hydration from the succulent plants and moisture-rich wild berries they digest.

Social Life and Mating

Lifelong Partners:

Nēnē are deeply loyal and form exclusive, lifelong pair-bonds.

Nesting Habits:

They nest directly on the ground, carefully hiding their large eggs under low-growing brush. They lay 2 to 5 eggs per clutch, which require a roughly 30-day incubation period.

A Historic Conservation Comeback

The Nēnē holds a legendary status in wildlife conservation as a species brought back from the absolute brink: [1]

The Crash:

An estimated 25,000 Nēnē lived in Hawaii in the late 1700s. However, hunting and human-introduced predators (pigs, mongooses, rats, and feral cats) decimated them. By 1952, only about 30 individual birds survived in the wild.

The Rescue:

Renowned conservationist Sir Peter Scott stepped in, bringing a few birds to the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) at Slimbridge in England to initiate a desperate captive breeding initiative.

The Present:

Thanks to that international program and ongoing local predator control by organizations like the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the population has successfully rebounded to around 4,000 birds in the wild. They have officially been downlisted from "Endangered" to "Threatened" status.
