At a local canal swans are nesting. Last year they were successful but this year they nested in a different place where the canal is polluted and rubbish is thrown in. In the new place they are also constantly disturbed by people passing on a small bridge next to the nest. We noticed that all of their eggs except one have somehow rolled into the water or disappeared and we noticed two eggs in the water - we don't know how long they have been there for but they have moss growing on them. We thought that they would still have a few eggs left but saw that they only had one that was still on the nest but quite close to the water and the male did not seem to be sitting on it properly. The female tried to pull this egg closer to her and she then sat on it so hopefully the egg will hatch and they will be able to look after this one cygnet.

In Fall 2011, a giant sequoia fell at the Trail of 100 Giants in Tulare County. We went to see it when it was fresh and were astonished by the vibrant colors. It was as if the tree was bleeding. The splintering of the branches scattered far and wide, asphalt paths were crushed, and strange shapes resulted, one reminding me of a gargoyle and another of a snake. The power of nature is unbelievable.
