One of three tiger cubs born in captivity at Marwell Zoo.
It was Milla and Bagai’s first litter together. Both tigers were part of an important European Endangered species breeding Programme (EEP) which maintains a healthy captive population of tigers and preserves critical genetic diversity for the future.
In the 1940s, the Amur tiger was close to extinction with an estimated population of fewer than 30 individuals remaining in the wild. Decades of turmoil in Russia and formation of the former Soviet Union reportedly contributed to failures to stem uncontrolled persecution.
In 1947 the Soviet Union became the first country to introduce legislation that imposed protection, including banning hunting of tigers. Hunting of the tiger’s main prey species, boar and deer were also limited at this time.
Today, the Amur tiger has full priority species protection in both countries in which it occurs, Russia and China. The population is now estimated to be 360 individuals. However, poaching is still a threat to the species.
Tonight was supposed to be a time to celebrate. Tonight was supposed to be a night of fun and excitement. Tonight was not supposed to end in tears and screaming. It was only a month or so ago that'd she'd began learning to forgive herself for her sisters death. One mistake wasn't the only reason McKenna died, right? But when another mistakes, the failure to learn everything she needed to know, results in the only person she has in her life that she cares about, getting hurt... everything comes crashing down. Maybe it was her fault. Maybe everything was.
*...
When she's at the bottom, she lets her facade break. She darts into the kitchen quickly and presses her back against the wall, sliding down as her hands reach to cover her face. The tears come without hesitation and the silent sobs fall on deaf ears. The guilt races through her like an unwanted visitor she was sure she'd run from already. But instead, she finds herself trying to recite the words he taught her. 'I did all I could...' 'No I didn't...' 'Still here...' 'But he's broken even more again...' 'Meaning...' 'What meaning can come of this? You failed again, Jorgia.'...*
I couldn't let Sunday pass without sharing the fun with Photoshop's Generative Fill I had today. I used Generative Fill to dismiss several logs on the right side of the basalt cliff where the falls drop, added some interest to the foreground water and as the coup de grace, added two figures jumping into the falls on the left. Generative fill works pretty well for inanimate objects but it's ability to do people is a spectacular failure! Those people are pretty scary; they're good for Halloween decor. They are too large as well as the falls drop is 43 feet.
I was inspired to add the jumpers because I read this fall is popular on social media as a place to film your friends jumping into the plunge pool. If you are curious about the number of logs removed, go look at the photo I posted looking down at the falls, three frames back.
Happy Slider Sunday!

I spent an embarrassingly large amount of time creating bubbles and having every one of them fail. My bubble solution needs to be remade because the bubbles die and pop very quickly but instead of pouring it out and starting with fresh, I kept going. I wanted to make it work and even though I was frustrated that they lost color and popped. I won't make that mistake tomorrow but need to use one of the images from today as a reminder that when things aren't working we should stop and fix them. I am not sure if you need to hear this message today too but if you know something isn't working instead of just powering through you will end up with better results and be happier if you fix the problem instead of just ignoring it and thinking it will go away. Learn from my failure... especially all of my grammatical errors.
Failures.

As we were heading home from Carrizo I saw the bright red/pink/ orange flames of a SpaceX rocket launch and told my son to pull over so the four of us could watch. Luckily we were in a wide open agricultural area and the night was crystal clear. It's always fun to go out in the darkness and watch from home too.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket shortly after launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
It was carrying another batch of its Starlink internet satellites into orbit. You can see the first stage, nearly center of the photo after it separated, which comes back to Earth for a vertical touchdown about 8.5 minutes after liftoff. That landing occurs on the deck of the drone ship OCISLY "Of Course I Still Love You", which is stationed in the Pacific Ocean. The first stage will then be reused for future launches. Those two smaller bright spots behind the second stage are the fairings.
As I type this - March 28, 2024 - there will be a launch tonight (3/28/2024) which will be the 30th Falcon 9 flight of 2024, and the 20th dedicated to building out the Starlink megaconstellation. To date, SpaceX has lofted 6,077 Starlink satellites, 5,610 of which are currently operational, according to astrophysicist and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell.
Those already-staggering numbers will continue to grow far into the future. SpaceX has permission to deploy 12,000 Starlink craft in LEO and has applied for approval for another 30,000 on top of that.
While I had high hopes that this cloud Cannon Beach formation may have led to this sky turning ablaze in sunset colors, it turned out to hardly give any hint of what I had hoped for. Still, I found myself mesmerized by the detailed reflections in the sand.
Henry Ford is often looked back upon by history as a pioneer and innovator with his successful automobile manufacturing legacy. But not all of his ideas were successful. In 1920 Ford bought the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton which served his Rouge factory. His grand plans included electrifying the railroad so he could use power from his factory to keep costs down. But this electrification project was ultimately a failure as electric trains only ran for a few years before the subsequent owner of the DT&I determined steam was more economical. Ford’s electrification arches still remain to this day, mainly because they were made of solid concrete and too costly to remove. Canadian National train L572 is seen here rolling south towards Flat Rock Yard on the former DT&I (currently the CN Dearborn Subdivision). Two former IC SD70s lead the train under some of Ford’s Arches that remain near Taylor, MI.

sam made this guy from a kit, and considering the instructions were in burmese, i was so proud. the thing worked too, for about 5 minutes, then one of the red eyeball lights went out. it's balance was too off kilter for much walking and sam was soon in mourning on the bathroom floor.
If it makes you less sad, I will die by your hand
Hope you find out what you want; already know what I am.
And if it makes you less sad, we'll start talking again
You can tell me how vile I already know that I am
I'll grow old, start acting my age
It'll be a brand new day in a life that I hate
A crown of gold, a heart that's harder than stone
And it hurts a whole lot, but it's missed when it's gone
If it makes you less sad, I'll move out of this state
You can keep to yourself, I'll keep out of your way
It's cold as a tomb, and it's dark in your room
When I sneak to your bed to pour salt in my wounds
You are calm and reposed
Let your beauty unfold
Pale white, like the skin stretched over your bones
Spring keeps you ever close
You are second-hand smoke
You are so fragile and thin, standing trial for your sins
Holding on to yourself the best you can
You are the smell before rain
You are the blood in my veins
Call me a safe bet, I'm betting I'm not...
Union Pacific train YSP51 will have to swap power before proceeding to East Minneapolis after the PTC failed in 1933. This was one of many delays on that day; the train didn't depart until sunset.
On a cold clear winter morning New England Central Railroad train 611 (Brattleboro to Palmer turn that forwards the connecting 323/324 road freight traffic) rolls under the old State Street / Route 20 overpass at about MP 75 on the NECR's Palmer Sub, the one time Central Vermont Railway mainline. The small yard here that was once a busy location is now empty and seemingly little used.
Engineer Ken Hawkins gives a big smile and friendly wave from the cab of Providence and Worcester 4069, a GE C40-8W blt. Mar. 1989 as CR 6028 which passed to Norfolk Southern before being retired in 2017. It was sold to Larry's Truck and Electric and lanquished for many years until being picked up by Genesee and Wyoming and assigned to the PW. It was freshly painted in this veterans tribute scheme in September of 2024 and has mostly hidden out of the limelight in working stone trains out of New Haven. But it was recently loaned to NECR after a couple of their units suffered failures leading to a power shortage. Trailing are GE C40-8Ws NECR 4064 and 4068 blt. Mar. and Nov. 1991 as CR 6115 and CSXT 7740 respectively.

- John Mayer, Why Georgia
This was after a significant chunk of time was spent shooting in the water, trying to do a tribute to ladybugrock's Washed Up shot. Those were all a miserable failure (sorry, C!), but when I got back inside, I snapped a couple shots before I dired off and wound up really liking this one. So there ya go.
I weighed myself yesterday for the first time since we moved back to Michigan and I am officially 25 lbs lighter than I was when we left Kansas. Michigan is definitely good for my health. Or maybe it's just living at the lake and being so active with swimming, kayaking, golf, etc. Either way, I'm feeling pretty great about it. Still have a ways to go, but I'm making some good progress at least. And I golfed a fantastic game yesterday, so I have found my love of the sport again. :) Funny how fickle I am with that.
The title is a lyric from one of my favorite musicians, John Mayer. I love a lot of music, but there's always been something about Mayer that sucks me in. His lyrics really touch me someplace deep in my soul, and damn, can that man play guitar.

What do you call a Beautiful and Friendly Witch?..."A Failure"...Asha you are such a big failure...
I've decided to upload some of my Asha Halloween pictures I've had them ready for ages and just couldn't wait to upload them. I want to see how they are received as I have quite a load of them... This was one of the first Halloween pictures I ever took of Asha and I think it is so cute ...
Vehicle failures often occur in most inconvenient places. Here WMT 1346 has failed and Metrobus 2929 has to mount the pavement to pass the obstruction, 26 May 2001.

I had a conversation with a friend recently where the topic of failure came up. In specific, he was reflecting on the failure of his photography business and how that led to him avoiding photography for several years after his business went under. That brief conversation has been kicking around in my head ever since, particularly the power that the idea of failure has over us. We struggle with this concept in so many different ways, related to photography and otherwise. All of us have a fear of failure on some level or another and it influences our behavior and choices. To keep the scope of this manageable, I'll keep it revolving around photography. A good example is the idea of "bad pictures". We try to avoid making bad pictures, right? Why? What exactly is wrong with a bad picture? Well, it is a little failure on our part and enough of those strung together... so we follow trusted formulas, trends and cliches to make photos, that while not original, are at least better guaranteed of "success" both in our own eyes and those of others. It is fear of failure that makes it so hard for many photographers to share their work with their peers. What if it is not received positively? What does that say about me? It was fear of failure that led my friend to giving up photography after the perceived failure of his photo business. And I am sure there are many other ways we can list that this fear insinuates itself into our photographic lives.
I don't think I have all the answers on this. On some levels I am as much a victim of this fear as others. But I also feel like in some ways I have learned to inoculate myself against this fear as well, at least in photography. A big part of the way I did that was redefining what "success" and "failure" meant to me. It is a simple and tricky thing to do. But if you take a moment to consider that the rules of failure that we play by are rules that we have the power to dictate then it is simply a matter of changing those rules. I sometimes tangentially lecture on this to classes when I talk about the whole idea of "bad pictures". I encourage my students to not think of bad pictures as bad just because they didn't turn out like you wanted or expected, but rather to see them as learning opportunities with each picture you make teaching you something new and making you a slightly better photographer in the process. In that sense, no picture is a bad picture and every picture makes you more experienced and competent, even if that growth is incremental. That is changing the definition of both success and failure and by doing so eliminating to some degree the fear of failure via bad pictures at least.
I do think it is worth considering what you define as success and how wise a definition you are following. Is the success you are chasing financial? creative? social popularity? It is not that these are wrong answers per se, but they might be, or at least they might be wrong for you in that particular circumstance or moment. And if you are tripping up against that struggle with perceived failure, try changing you how perceive success and failure.
I don't know if this image embodies fear as much as it does disappointment (which is a lower version of fear I suppose). This was one of those photos that I liked the idea and execution but problems with the film itself manifested causing the speckling and mottling across the image. I scanned it anyway and left it for months in my To Edit folder, just sitting there. Then one night recently I was looking at it again and didn't see the failure I had seen before. That allowed me to see a success I had not seen before. And so I present this image with these thoughts today.

The failure of preceding 4L95 at Chelmsford saw the pair of, then on time, orange Skodas recessed in the down loop at Aldersbrook waiting for the blockage to be removed. With the 12.00 London - Norwich hard on their heels the duo were recessed in Colchester Down Goods Loop to give precedence to the GA service. This provided the now rare sight of 90s exiting platform 1 at Colchester as 4L91 & 4L89 normally fly through non-stop.
