Nearly as long as I've been photographing trains, finding Wisconsin & Southern trains on Metra territory in daylight has been a "couple times a year" kind of event. Rare, but never impossible. Occasionally, it's been some extra out of BRC Clearing, but more often something that went "bump in the night" that forced WSOR into the siding at Abbott Park (west of Rondout) in advance of the morning Metra rush. And almost always, it' s been the westbound train to Janesville that got hosed, never the eastbound.
Until February 9.
Several years ago, WSOR placed into a service a large siding near Belden, Ill., west of Fox Lake, which enabled the meet between westbound T001 (from Belt Railway of Chicago's Clearing Yard) and eastbound T004 to occur on WSOR property instead of on the two main tracks on the C&M east of Rondout. That works out well... until it doesn't. Early on this particular day, a CPKC freight train suffered mechanical failures that trapped T001 east of Rondout, which in turn trapped this T004 west of Fox Lake. By the time all that got resolved, the morning Metra parade had started, T001 cleared up at Abbott Park, and Metra agreed to cut the recrewed T004 loose after the morning rush.
After it met Metra Milwaukee District North Line 2111 at Grayslake and then Train 2113 at Liberty, a small siding west of Libertyville, Wisconsin & Southern Train T004-08 (Manifest, Janesville, Wis.–BRC Clearing Yard, Bedford Park, Ill.) buried the throttle and went quick like bunny for Rondout, where it could get out of 2115's way. The operation of T004 on February 9 put into stunning relief why eastbound WSOR trains almost never operated on the Fox Lake Sub in daylight, even after the morning rush.

Ooooh. At least I woke! But with a headache and a sweaty fever again. I'm waiting for things to get better. Think I have some way to go according to this:
What are the stages and symptoms of COVID-19?
Day 1: The symptoms usually start with a fever, a dry cough and mild breathing issues which may get worse over the next week. You also may have symptoms of a sore throat, coughing up mucus, diarrhea, nausea, body aches and joint pain.
Day 7: Breathing may become difficult or laboured. This is called dyspnoea.
Day 9: Sepsis may start, this is the body's extreme response to an infection that can lead to organ failure or injury.
Day 10-12: People who have mild COVID-19 start to have an improvement in their fever and cough, but in serious cases their fever and cough continues.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) starts to be diagnosed, this is a respiratory problem when there is widespread inflammation in the lungs.
Day 12: This is the median day to be admitted into the intensive care unit (ICU).
Day 15: Acute kidney and cardiac injury becomes evident.
Day 18.5: The median time it takes from the first symptoms of COVID-19 to death is 18.5 days.
Day 22: This is the median amount of days it takes for COVID-19 survivors to be released from hospital
Not sure what day I'm on. Only got a first positive test result yesterday

No quote this fine English Evening, I think like most photographers I stick to a comfort zone.. perhaps I remain stagnant in my photography.. busy life, family, blah blah, always wanting to do something a little different.. I love 'Still Life' but I hesitate on exploring it. Fear of failure maybe? But then like most genuine non-ego photographers who photograph with a true passion for the art of photography and always happy to learn, I fear failure a little and who wouldn't.. so.. this fine summers afternoon, I picked some flowers from my bloomin garden and played around, no usual bokeh, no depth of field, no 1.4 apertures, no guaranteed results I know I can do, I tried something different the very scary world of 'Still Life'!! I have the imagination and I know my camera inside out, but I remain stagnant.. so here is a small go at something less guaranteed in my knowledge, but something I want to do.. polite opinions welcome.. go gentle one me I've had a rough week :))
Square net fishing in Phatthalung, Thailand, is a traditional method practiced in the Thale Noi wetlands. Fishermen use bamboo platforms with suspended square nets operated by a pulley and counterweight system. The nets are lowered into the water to trap fish as they swim by, relying on the fishermen’s knowledge of tides and fish behavior. The catch is collected using smaller scoop nets. This sustainable method allows smaller fish to escape, preserving ecosystems. Fishing often occurs in the early morning or evening and reflects generations of cultural tradition. The bamboo structures, especially at sunrise, have become iconic, attracting tourists and photographers. Square net fishing symbolizes the harmonious connection between people and nature, blending livelihood and heritage in this serene region.
Funny story. I needed to fly my drone amongst the mangrove roots to get this panorama capture. Elated after the final frame was shot I mistakenly flew straight up into a guide wire and crashed the drone into the river. Just 5m offshore, I quickly stripped down and dove into the water to recover the drone. Down about 4m it was cold and pitch black with no sign of the bottom. Failure. The hotel was able to find me a salvage diver who was able to recover the drone a week later using the last recorded GPS coordinates. I received the corroded drone and more importantly the still functioning micro SD card a couple of weeks after my return from the trip. Elation again upon successful import, and panorama stitch.

DMIR 209 and 417 pull up to the searchlights at Wolf as they put their train away and end their day on January 30, 2004.
Back before the CN took over, the Missabe would run extra limestone trains of about 30 cars like this for Minntac. Despite the shorter train, the frigid weather on this January day would not allow this crew to make it back to Proctor, so they parked it on the Wolf Storage Track. Temps. were under -30F overnight and not above zero during a three day stretch here in late January 2004. An ID pellet train would later pick up this power and take it to Two Harbors, as power was needed there because of all the power failures during this stretch of cold weather in the Missabe's last winter.

Tonight was supposed to be a time to celebrate. Tonight was supposed to be a night of fun and excitement. Tonight was not supposed to end in tears and screaming. It was only a month or so ago that'd she'd began learning to forgive herself for her sisters death. One mistake wasn't the only reason McKenna died, right? But when another mistakes, the failure to learn everything she needed to know, results in the only person she has in her life that she cares about, getting hurt... everything comes crashing down. Maybe it was her fault. Maybe everything was.
*...
When she's at the bottom, she lets her facade break. She darts into the kitchen quickly and presses her back against the wall, sliding down as her hands reach to cover her face. The tears come without hesitation and the silent sobs fall on deaf ears. The guilt races through her like an unwanted visitor she was sure she'd run from already. But instead, she finds herself trying to recite the words he taught her. 'I did all I could...' 'No I didn't...' 'Still here...' 'But he's broken even more again...' 'Meaning...' 'What meaning can come of this? You failed again, Jorgia.'...*
I found a colony of sand martins on Berneray, Outer Hebrides in dunes along one of the beaches and it seemed as though it might have some opportunity to photograph the birds. I spent a long while attempting to get them leaving the nest hole and had way more failures than success but here's one I liked.
I was using the Nikkor 600mm f/4 which has a very tight field of view so I wasn't doing myself any favours. I didn't use the Nikon pre-capture setting as it currently is limited to small JPEG. So, I just pre-focussed and waited and tried to track them as they exited.
Cunningham in his 1984 book 'Birds of the Outer Hebrides' lists sand martin as a common passage migrant but they now breed in small numbers.
The image of failure. 4x5 xray negative from 4x5 holder in speed graphic. Meant for a wonderful Lumen on Xray but that was bound to fail, for reasons I am not aware of yet.
This is for everyone who would like to see failure up close and personal.

I spent an embarrassingly large amount of time creating bubbles and having every one of them fail. My bubble solution needs to be remade because the bubbles die and pop very quickly but instead of pouring it out and starting with fresh, I kept going. I wanted to make it work and even though I was frustrated that they lost color and popped. I won't make that mistake tomorrow but need to use one of the images from today as a reminder that when things aren't working we should stop and fix them. I am not sure if you need to hear this message today too but if you know something isn't working instead of just powering through you will end up with better results and be happier if you fix the problem instead of just ignoring it and thinking it will go away. Learn from my failure... especially all of my grammatical errors.

While I had high hopes that this cloud Cannon Beach formation may have led to this sky turning ablaze in sunset colors, it turned out to hardly give any hint of what I had hoped for. Still, I found myself mesmerized by the detailed reflections in the sand.
this is it.
all of it?
not even close. just the part you can see.
and you think we can do this?
we have no choice.
life is full of choices.
not for us it isn't.
well, we might as well get started.

sam made this guy from a kit, and considering the instructions were in burmese, i was so proud. the thing worked too, for about 5 minutes, then one of the red eyeball lights went out. it's balance was too off kilter for much walking and sam was soon in mourning on the bathroom floor.
Henry Ford is often looked back upon by history as a pioneer and innovator with his successful automobile manufacturing legacy. But not all of his ideas were successful. In 1920 Ford bought the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton which served his Rouge factory. His grand plans included electrifying the railroad so he could use power from his factory to keep costs down. But this electrification project was ultimately a failure as electric trains only ran for a few years before the subsequent owner of the DT&I determined steam was more economical. Ford’s electrification arches still remain to this day, mainly because they were made of solid concrete and too costly to remove. Canadian National train L572 is seen here rolling south towards Flat Rock Yard on the former DT&I (currently the CN Dearborn Subdivision). Two former IC SD70s lead the train under some of Ford’s Arches that remain near Taylor, MI.

From reckless corporate consolidation of the media industry, the Presidential persecution of whistle blowers to the targeting of independent wartime journalists by our military, our system has completely failed us. The continuous stream of sensationalism feeds our addiction to drama, hyperstimulating the senses with fear and novelty. The war drums beat to the tune of our racing hearts – which rage with fury over manipulated messages driven by those in power.
Personally, my advise would be to shut off the TVs – which drive us away from the essence of a meaningful existence. Ignore all mainstream messages – they are rooted in profit. Focus our thoughts and hearts to kindness, forgiveness and tolerance. The Fourth Estate will burn on its own.

One of the primary new techniques (for me) used in this build was the implementation of Lego nets (71155) for sculpting. By backing each net with smaller plates – set apart by 1 stud – and then using 1x1 round plate pips on the front side (sandwiching the net in between), I had a flexible scrim which I could then build off of. This allowed for the undulating forms in the explosion area.

As we were heading home from Carrizo I saw the bright red/pink/ orange flames of a SpaceX rocket launch and told my son to pull over so the four of us could watch. Luckily we were in a wide open agricultural area and the night was crystal clear. It's always fun to go out in the darkness and watch from home too.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket shortly after launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
It was carrying another batch of its Starlink internet satellites into orbit. You can see the first stage, nearly center of the photo after it separated, which comes back to Earth for a vertical touchdown about 8.5 minutes after liftoff. That landing occurs on the deck of the drone ship OCISLY "Of Course I Still Love You", which is stationed in the Pacific Ocean. The first stage will then be reused for future launches. Those two smaller bright spots behind the second stage are the fairings.
As I type this - March 28, 2024 - there will be a launch tonight (3/28/2024) which will be the 30th Falcon 9 flight of 2024, and the 20th dedicated to building out the Starlink megaconstellation. To date, SpaceX has lofted 6,077 Starlink satellites, 5,610 of which are currently operational, according to astrophysicist and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell.
Those already-staggering numbers will continue to grow far into the future. SpaceX has permission to deploy 12,000 Starlink craft in LEO and has applied for approval for another 30,000 on top of that.
