Christopher Atkins—Professor of "A Life in Art: Francis Bacon".
Francis Bacon, an artist notorious for his paintings of agonized bodies, was also an equally nuanced portraitist who provoked viewers to question their assumptions about identity and recognizable human likenesses. Over the semester we will study Bacon's work from these and a range of other perspectives, including; his relationship to Baroque and Modern European painting traditions; his interest in cinema and photography; and his philosophical inquiries as they relate to patriarchal authority, bodily sensation, and human mortality.
