A view of Factory Butte looking north. The Butte got its name from early settlers who thought it looked like a massive factory. It is a major landmark that can be seen from miles around. This sky is from a shot taken from near this location several years ago.
Happy Fence Friday!
The setting sun warms up the colors of Factory Butte near Capitol Reef National Park. The eroding slopes of Mancos Shale form rills reminiscent of flying buttresses for this desert cathedral. There is a tiny bit of virga dropping from the clouds on the left.
The photo is a two shot focus stack to catch as much detail in the textures near and far as possible.
abandoned tobacco factory, 1847 founded as sugar factory, 1946 tobacco fermentation factory, closed 1990
We hiked on the badlands that surround Factory Butte. The Butte rises 1500 feet above the surrounding plain. It is composed of clay/silt mudstone that erodes into sharp rills, deep gullies, and badlands. The Butte was named by Mormon settlers of the area because of its similarity to a woolen mill in Provo, Utah.
