The Deserted Village, Achill Island.
Set at the foot of the south-facing slope of Slievemore mountain, this "village" consists of the remains of almost 100 traditional stone cottages. They are set either side of an ancient pathway, almost all aligned in the same north-south direction, and they occupy one of the most sheltered areas of Achill Island. The "village" - in reality three distinct groups of cottages - extends for a distance of about one mile.
It is thought that the village was occupied during several different stages in history, with some of the buildings perhaps being constructed on top of previous dwellings. Through study of the field systems surrounding the Deserted Village, archaeological investigation, and historical research it has been established that settlement dates at least to the Anglo-Norman period (12th Century AD). The presence of a megalithic tomb close to the village, dating from the 3rd or 4th Century BC, indicates habitation in the area some 5000 years ago.
The most recent period of habitation came to an end in the early 20th century, when the cottages were used for "booleying" by the local population. As "booley" houses they were occupied during the summer months, when cattle would be grazed on the mountainside, but the residents would return to their homes in the villages of Pollagh and Dooagh for the winter months. Achill is thought to be one of the last places in Europe to have practised this type of settlement. There are a number of other booley villages on the island, including one at Bunowna (in the valley at Keem Bay) and another at Annagh, but Slievemore is by far the largest and best preserved.

Original photo taken at an amusement parks, this was one of those games where you squirt water into the clown's mouth to fill a balloon to see who can pop it fastest, and you end up acting like you are in a war against the clowns and you're filling his evil clown mouth with poison instead of water and when you win you pump your fist and yell TAKE THAT YOU SON OF A BITCH and the little kid next to you who had his heart set on winning that stuffed goldfish starts bawling and you look him straight in the eye and say "It was either I win, or the clown comes into your room at night and eats your soul." But you give the kid the stuffed goldfish anyhow, because they are of no use in the war against clowns.
(I may or may not have done that. And the kid may or may not have been my son, who was born with an unhealthy fear of clowns which was intensified later on when he read Stephen King's IT - when he was done we had to put the book in the garage so he wouldn't accidentally see the cover in the middle of the night)
Its a common cosmos flower. Had seen it clicked this way in an exhibition, since then wanted to click it against the sky. However, did not get good composition so far. Here also the sky is not bright and the effect is not that great. but still... :)

Work is well underway on Sky Waka, the new high-speed gondola at Whakapapa on New Zealand’s North Island, with the team facing ever-changing logistical challenges with engineering specifications, getting materials on-site, and the physical construction process.
Lack of access over unique volcanic terrain adds to the complexity of this project. Even transporting concrete from the truck to the construction site has required some out of the box thinking.
“Conventional concrete trucks drive part way up the mountain and are then replaced with a trailer concrete mixing bowl with a 3.5 cubic metre capacity” says Whakapapa General Manager, Jono Dean.
“The concrete is then transferred onto a purpose built aerial material ropeway system that then transfers the loads to the locations required in the mid mountain. To date, 400 of the 1100 tonnes required for this project has been transported.”
The Swiss engineered ropeway can transport up to 5 tonnes of equipment and materials without relying on helicopter use, which can be restricted due to weather conditions. At over 1000m in length with towers up to 34m tall, it is the first of its kind in NZ to be constructed for the purpose of building a passenger ropeway on a ski field.
“We’ve had amazing luck with weather this summer, which has got the project off to a great start but being up a mountain conditions could change rapidly and affect the project timeline.”
The construction of the 14 tower foundations to support the new Sky Waka gondola line are nearly complete and work is underway on the terminal stations where people will get on and off the gondola.
Italian based company Leitner is supplying and installing the gondola, and General Manager David Ratcliffe says he’s excited to be involved in New Zealand’s largest gondola installation. “This project has presented unique challenges but work is progressing well and it’s exciting to be a part of such an iconic project.”
The fifty Sky Waka gondola cabins will feature floor to ceiling glass for breathtaking views, internal ski racks, audio and lighting and individual leather seats offering business-class luxury to passengers befitting of the UNESCO Dual World Heritage status of Whakapapa Ski Area. Each cabin accommodates 10 passengers and even the tallest skiers will be able to stand upright in the cabin with more than 2m of internal clearance.
The Sky Waka will run from the Top of the Bruce base area directly to the award-winning Knoll Ridge Café. It will transport 2,400 people per hour over the 1.8km in approximately 5 minutes.
Social and economic indicators for the gondola project are compelling, with a team of about 35 hands on people working on the project and another estimated 100 people contributing to the project behind the scenes, including a strong contingent of local employment from the area.
The gondola project has involved working closely with Ngati Tuwharetoa and DOC which has seen a significant reduction in the number of structures on the mountain, the new installation having less than half of the structures it replaces.
As a public benefit entity RAL invests its proceeds back into developing the mountain’s facilities and the new gondola forms part of the $100m reinvestment strategy announced by the RAL board in 2015.

«Le béton est ensuite transféré sur un système de remontée mécanique sur matériaux aériens spécialement conçu à cet effet, qui transfère ensuite les charges aux emplacements requis en moyenne montagne. À ce jour, 400 des 1 100 tonnes requises pour ce projet ont été transportées. ”
Les remontées mécaniques suisses peuvent transporter jusqu'à 5 tonnes d'équipements et de matériaux sans recourir à l'utilisation d'hélicoptères, ce qui peut être limité en raison des conditions météorologiques. Avec plus de 1000 m de long et des tours atteignant 34 m de haut, il s'agit du premier du genre en Nouvelle-Zélande à être construit dans le but de construire un téléphérique pour passagers sur un domaine skiable.
"Nous avons eu une chance incroyable avec la météo de cet été, ce qui a donné un bon départ au projet, mais être dans les conditions montagneuses pourrait changer rapidement et avoir une incidence sur le calendrier du projet."

The south-facing slopes of the West Fork's valley are dry and surprisingly warm. Across the river, at left here, conditions are entirely different. In Arizona, sun exposure is everything.

For five consecutive years, Perspectives Leadership Academy (PLA) scholars are working with college students from Howard University during the week of March 16th. "Each year, Howard students visit during their spring break and work with a select group of students," said Antoinette Self, program manager at PLA.
Hundreds of Howard University students who skipped the beaches, parties, vacations and even trips home for spring break are embarking to seven U.S. cities and Haiti, where they will spend the week serving others. This year during the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) week of March 16, more than 400 students will be working in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and the communities of Croix des Bouquets and Petion Ville in Haiti.
ASB Chicago participants will tackle the gun violence epidemic facing the city. Howard University students will educate high school students about conflict resolution and ways to build a better future for themselves. Students will also work with advocacy groups to lobby for stricter gun laws.

Kouri Island, where Hanalee Villa Kouri is located, is an island of about 8km in the northern part of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, surrounded by the wonderful blue sea.
