But I saw a kid with no smile on his face today

Where is my place in this bright future, I heard him say

I've lost my hope there isn't anywhere to play

British citizen and American painter John George Brown (1831-1913) decided to leave his native England after hearing a music-hall performer sing about life in America. In the decades following the American Civil War (1861-1865), he became one of the most popular and commercially succesful artists in the US.

Brown was drawn to the young working poor he met on the streets of New York City. In this Central Park scene, a group of working boys rallies around a lost and crying girl. In spite of their own desperate circumstances, they have stopped to help someone even more defenseless than themselves.

This Brown original painting was seen on permanent display at the de Young museum in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

This charming woman is apparently oblivious to the danger she's incurring by jaywalking in a spot where there's nowhere to escape from the oncoming traffic... The striped barriers seen here, installed to protect pedestrians walking under the scaffolding--are made of concrete, not plastic, and can't be pushed aside. (The adjacent bus terminal is being completely redone, causing a lot of extra congestion in the neighborhood.)

The expression of the young girl under the scaffolding speaks to the shock all of us felt when we saw this woman risking her life. This shot was made near the entrance to the George Washington Bridge, where there are a lot of cars, buses and trucks, all in a big hurry to get to New Jersey--and beyond. (It's the only Westward bridge between Manhattan and the Continental USA.)

(Taken from a car window--was I ever surprised/shocked! The woman appeared out of nowhere!)
