Instead of buying ready-made "out-of-the-box" products, technologies and developments that enable you to produce as much as possible yourself are becoming increasingly important. An interesting development in this area is open source hardware, also called free hardware: Here, free blueprints for the production of various electronic and mechanical parts are made available. In the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic, face shields are now being produced in the Ars Electronica Center's MaterialLab using 3D printers.

GoGo's arm armor meant she couldn't do the Batusi on herself. So she did the Batusi to Honey Lemon instead. I wanted them to cross-arms and do it to each other, but this works too.

This was a prototype of a very small thermal imaging camera designed to clip onto the faceshield of a firefighting helmet. The rectangular window is an electronic viewfinder about 12 x 16mm in size that hung down in front of the faceshield, just below its upper edge where it could be viewed with the right eye without blocking general vision; the knob on the left side of the viewfinder housing is to flip it up out of the way when the imager is not needed. When not in use, the viewfinder can be folded back parallel to the body of the imager, and then the whole thing can be carried in a turnout coat pocket.

This was prototyped and field tested but never went into production.
