I was approached by 5 Wits Attractions to design and build a custom version 3 dimensional model of the classic nautilus submarine featured in Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues under the sea, to be displayed in the museum of their interactive attraction. The design would incorporate interactive lighting and would be approximately 4 feet long.
I wanted to keep with a more organic and streamlined shape though with a bit more grounded in reality design for a submarine. In the original story Verne's description of the sub was more like a Narwhal whale, as such I had always envisioned it to be more like a whale shark. I believed this design would be able to better camouflage into the ocean, while being a perfect design for ramming ships with it's dorsal fin.
My only limitations with this design were the placement of the windows, diving bell and latches which had to mimic the placement in the already built attraction at 5 Wits. The model was scratch built using foam, Worbla, resin, wood, and plastic and is lit by LEDs.

Edwin is a stickler for detail and blocked this picture, lol sort of. He was bothered that I got a picture of the fitting between the Vacuum Pump and valve cover. It is the wrong size and temporarily has it held in place.

Another commission that had to be done. I was pleased with how the tube setting turned out. The customer didn't want the bezel up very high and wanted a bit more security than a flush stone.
In recent decades, developments in software and hardware technologies have created dramatic shifts in design, manufacturing and research. Software technologies have facilitated automated process and new solutions for complex problems. Computation has also become a platform for creativity through generative art and design. New hardware platforms and digital fabrication technologies have similarly transformed manufacturing, offering more efficient production and mass customization. Such advances have helped catalyzed the maker-movement, democratizing design and maker culture. This influx of new capabilities to design, compute and fabricate like never before, has sparked a renewed interest in material performance.
We are now witnessing significant advances in active matter, 3D/4D Printing, materials science, synthetic biology, DNA nanotechnology and soft robotics, which have led to the convergence of software, hardware and material technologies and the growing field of programmable materials.
This conference was about the emerging field of active matter and programmable materials that bridges the worlds of art, science, engineering and design, demonstrating new perspectives for computation, transformation and dynamic material applications.
If over the past few decades we have experienced a software revolution, and more recently, a hardware revolution, this conference aims to discuss the premises, challenges and innovations brought by today’s materials revolution. We can now sense, compute, and actuate with materials alone, just as we could with software and hardware platforms previously. How does this shift influence materials research, and how does it shape the future of design, arts, and industrial applications? What tools and design processes do we need to advance, augment and invent new materials today? What are the key roles that industry, government, academic and public institutions can play in catalyzing the field of programmable materials?
This two-day conference consisted of a range of talks and lively discussion from leading researchers in materials science, art & design, synthetic biology and soft-robotics along with leaders from government, public institutions and industry.

Recently recognized as a top fabricator in Event Marketer’s annual Fab 50 list, Britten Inc. was once again acknowledged for superior work with an Experience Design & Technology Award.
TRAVERSE CITY, MI—A solution-oriented fabrication powerhouse and one of the world's leading event marketing companies, Britten Inc. continues to deliver impactful experiential branding projects that create notice for their clients. This commitment to excellence was further validated when Britten seized the gold award for Best Mobile Marketing Vehicle for its work on an activation event package for Amplified Marketing’s client Gray Whale Gin.
Designed to promote the Ocean Love Tour, the centerpiece of this award-winning experiential brand activation set was a Volkswagen Bus converted by Britten’s BoxPop® team into a bespoke gin bar. Highly visible in the brand’s signature turquoise and whale tail graphics, the VW was retrofitted with a custom-fabricated hinge-top that opened into a pop-up bar. Accompanied by a highly customized shipping container (including over 75 tailormade exterior fins) this branded customer experience created presence for Gray Whale Gin and was recognized as the top prize in its category for the Experience Design & Technology award.

What do you get when you weld together three miles of rebar, 7,000 pounds of metal, 300 pounds of wire and 16,000 individual small pieces? You get an amazing, “WOW” sculpture of a woolly mammoth! What else can rebar make? A paleo hunter to stalk the metal mammoth! Yep it’s not easy making the human form out of rebar, but we know how to sculpt. Check out these “behind the scenes” photos of us moving the enormous sculptures from our fabrication shop in Illinois to Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center in Wisconsin!
