I just can't stop raving about the beauty of Reunion Island - driving into one of those long-extinct volcanos is like being on the set of Jurassic Park! The mountains you see in the background are around 2,000 metres high, and drop off steeply to river below.
Driving in these "Cirques" (that's what they call the extinct volcanos) is certainly not for the faint-hearted, but it's so worth it! Luckily, I have a very patient girl-friend who didn't mind that I pulled over every hundred metres or so to take more panorama shots.
On this panorama, you see the "Cirque de Salazie", which is actually not as awesome as the "Cirque de Cilaos"... but the weather was a lot better here, so the pictures came out much nicer :-)

The Anatini Whale Fossil Site is on private property but the owner allows visitation as part of the Vanished World Trail. On our visit, we met the owner. He took an hour out of his busy schedule and talked to us. We learned so much from him about the area. I can't find out much about the fossils except they are from an extinct baline whale. Rhino
A rhinoceros, commonly abbreviated to 'rhino', is one of any five extant species of odd-toed ungulates in the family Rhinocerotidae, as well as any of the numerous extinct species. Two of the extant species are native to Africa and three to Southern Asia. The term "rhinoceros" is often more broadly applied to now extinct relatives of the superfamily Rhinocerotoidea.
Members of the rhinoceros family are some of the largest remaining megafauna, with all species able to reach or exceed one tonne in weight. They have a herbivorous diet, small brains (400–600 g) for mammals of their size, one or two horns, and a thick (1.5–5 cm) protective skin formed from layers of collagen positioned in a lattice structure. They generally eat leafy material, although their ability to ferment food in their hindgut allows them to subsist on more fibrous plant matter when necessary. Unlike other perissodactyls, the two African species of rhinoceros lack teeth at the front of their mouths, relying instead on their lips to pluck food.[1]
Rhinoceros are killed by some humans for their horns, which are bought and sold on the black market, and used by some cultures for ornaments or traditional medicine. East Asia, specifically Vietnam, is the largest market for rhino horns. By weight, rhino horns cost as much as gold on the black market. People grind up the horns and consume them, believing the dust has therapeutic properties. The horns are made of keratin, the same type of protein that makes up hair and fingernails. Both African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros have two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceros have a single horn. The IUCN Red List identifies the Black, Javan, and Sumatran rhinoceros as critically endangered
The black rhinoceros or hook-lipped rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) is a species of rhinoceros, native to eastern and southern Africa including Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Although the rhinoceros is referred to as black, its colors vary from brown to grey.
The other African rhinoceros is the white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). The word "white" in the name "white rhinoceros" is often said to be a misinterpretation of the Afrikaans word wyd (Dutch wijd) meaning wide, referring to its square upper lip, as opposed to the pointed or hooked lip of the black rhinoceros. These species are now sometimes referred to as the square-lipped (for white) or hook-lipped (for black) rhinoceros.
The species overall is classified as critically endangered (even though the South-western black rhinoceros is classified as vulnerable). Three subspecies have been declared extinct, including the western black rhinoceros, which was declared extinct by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2011

Rinoceronte
Os rinocerontes são cocomamíferos perissodáctilos (ungulados de dedos ímpares) da família Rhinocerontidae, que ocorrem na África e na Ásia. Atualmente, existem cinco espécies distribuídas em quatro gêneros. Duas ocorrem na África, o rinoceronte-branco (Ceratotherium simum) e o rinoceronte-negro (Diceros bicornis); e três ocorrem na Ásia, o rinoceronte-de-sumatra (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), o rinoceronte-de-java (Rhinoceros sondaicus) e o rinoceronte-indiano (Rhinoceros unicornis).
Vivem geralmente isolados, em savanas ou florestas onde possam encontrar água diariamente. São especialmente protegidos na África, por fazerem parte do grupo dos cinco grandes mamíferos selvagens de grande porte mais difíceis de serem caçados pelo homem, sendo então uma das grandes atrações turísticas do continente. Contudo, a caça furtiva continua afetando as populações de rinocerontes.
O rinoceronte-negro (nome científico: Diceros bicornis) é uma espécie de rinoceronte, nativa do leste, sul e centro da África, incluindo o Quênia, Tanzânia, Camarões, África do Sul, Namíbia, Zimbábue e Angola. Embora referido como "negro", sua cor varia do marrom ao cinza.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve
The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is located north of Rustenburg in North West Province in South Africa. The park borders with the entertainment complex Sun City. The park is currently administered by the North West Parks and Tourism Board.
The area is fringed by three concentric ridges or rings of hills, of which the formation rises from the surrounding plains. Pilanesberg is named after a Tswana chief, Pilane, the 'Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex' is the park's primary geological feature. This vast circular geological feature is ancient even by geological standards as it is the crater of a long extinct volcano and the result of eruptions some 1,200 million years ago. It is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its type in the world, the rare rock types and formations make it a unique geological feature. A number of rare minerals occur in the park.
Scattered throughout the park are various sites that originate from the Iron Age and Stone Age and show the presence of man from those periods in these areas.
The park has an area of 572 square kilometres (221 sq mi). One can travel through in a standard road vehicle as although most of the 188 kilometres of track are not surfaced, they are well maintained.
The Pilanesberg is not in a location which the Big Five animals would naturally inhabit, however they have been brought into the 550 square kilometres of African bushland

This image presents a 3D captured view of life on the seafloor, 460 million years ago in Minnesota, USA. At this time, Minnesota was underwater, and hosted a diverse group of marine animals in a reef-like environment. On this small specimen, we can see the trilobite Dolichoharpes minnesotense, a coiled gastropod (relative of modern snails), and several individual corals. I took this image using photogrammetry – a cheap, accessible technique which produces 3D models by stitching together tens of photographs taken from different angles. I will use this 3D trilobite model to reconstruct how it lived and its method of feeding by simulating water flow around it. Fossils such as this are important for showing palaeontologists how different extinct animals lived together, and are remarkable for preserving an instant in time from before even land animals existed!
Southsea's dinosaur was destroyed by fire last night. Vandalism is suspected but an electrical fault could be to blame. Dino had lighting panels under his belly and maybe one of these got ripped off in the rain and gale-force winds, allowing water to get into the electrics. Once alight, the polyester skin burned rapidly, leaving only the charred steel skeleton. Sad day - not only for Southsea but also for the Brighton-based designers and the Serbian car-workers who built him.

Long dormant volcano. Budj Bim is the source of the Tyrendarra lava flow which extends over 50km to the southwest. It is central to the history of the Gunditjmara people.
Mount Eccles National Park is Victoria’s first co-managed national park. The park is managed by Gunditjmara Traditional Owners and Parks Victoria.
The park’s tranquil crater lake and pleasant bushland surrounds make it a pleasant place for picnicking, camping and bushwalking. Nature trails follow the old crater rim.
Mandible partials of the Broad-billed Parrot (Lophopsittacus mauritianus) and a tarsometatarsus of the Mauritius Blue Pigeon or Pigeon Hollandais (Alectroenas nitidissima) from Mauritius. They were excavated during the Dodo Expedition in 2006. They are photographed at the dodo exhibition in the National Museum of Natural History 'Naturalis' in Leiden, the Netherlands.

Extinct Symbol tattooed onto both my thumbs. This is part of a project I am working on to raise awareness of the biodiversity disaster currently ongoing in Turkey (over 4,000 Hydro electricity Power Plants and dams being developed across the whole of Turkey) and to raise funds for Doğa Derneği (Birdlife International's partner in Turkey). I have had 16 iconic birds tattooed onto my arms and hands (with another five to go). The extinct symbols on my thumbs serve as a reminder that some of these species could well face global extinction if these developments are allowed to continue. White Rock Mineral Springs Company was founded in 1871 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Although the company still exists, it is now based in Whitestone, New York, and I doubt they still bottle the same naturally "lithiated" mineral water from the spring in Waukesha. In fact they now advertise that their seltzers are triple-filtered and have no sodium.
This old-style bottle dates from the 1940s and has attracted an equally extinct consumer with a dinosaur sized thirst.

This is Cash - he is a Barbary Lion at Living Treasures Animal Park about an hour north of Pittsburgh. Barbary lions are said to be extinct in the wild with only about 150 left in captivity. Apparently Cash and June (both are named after Johnny and June Cash) had a litter of cubs last year which should help in conservation efforts :-)

Epioblasma torulosa torulosa (Rafinesque, 1820) - tubercled blossom (CMC, Cincinnati Museum of Natural History & Science, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA)
Bivalves are bilaterally symmetrical molluscs having two calcareous, asymmetrical shells (valves) - they include the clams, oysters, and scallops. In most bivalves, the two shells are mirror images of each other (the major exception is the oysters). They occur in marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments. Bivalves are also known as pelecypods and lamellibranchiates.
Bivalves are sessile, benthic organisms - they occur on or below substrates. Most of them are filter-feeders, using siphons to bring in water, filter the water for tiny particles of food, then expel the used water. The majority of bivalves are infaunal - they burrow into unlithified sediments. In hard substrate environments, some forms make borings, in which the bivalve lives. Some groups are hard substrate encrusters, using a mineral cement to attach to rocks, shells, or wood.
The fossil record of bivalves is Cambrian to Recent. They are especially common in the post-Paleozoic fossil record.

Mussels of the Little Miami River
The Little Miami River flowing through the eastern portion of Cincinnati is a national scenic river. Of the nation's 4,000 rivers, only 165 have been honored with such a designation. A national scenic river is one that includes an "outstandingly remarkable" biologic community.
Displayed here are the 50 types of native mussels that have been recorded from the river and its tributaries. Nine of these species are no longer found in the Little Miami system due to water quality deterioration.
Water pollution has also caused the disappearance of 7 of the 113 fishes recorded from the river. With better control of soil erosion and improved treatment of sewage effluent, the missing mussel and fish species could return to the Little Miami basin.
