The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University is an open-air folklife museum and research center dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Pennsylvania German heritage.
Located on the historic Sharadin Farmstead on the Kutztown Campus, the Heritage Center offers access for both the public and KU students to historic buildings and exhibits, a world-class research library collection, as well as seasonal events, conferences, lectures, and classes in Pennsylvania German dialect through the KU modern language department. An extensive research library is available for all who wish to conduct genealogical, historical, linguistic and cultural research. The Heritage Center is also the proud home of several regular publications, including Hiwwe wie Driwwe, the world's only Pennsylvania German dialect newspaper, as well as the annual Pennsylvania German dialect calendar, and the Annual Volume Publication Series, which showcases premier research in Pennsylvania German Culture. The Heritage Center offers tours of the historic site by appointment to individuals, organizations, and local schools. Local craftspeople and artisans were on site demonstrating traditional egg dying and scratching, tinsmithing, hearth cooking, paper crafts, and more. Visitors of all ages were immersed in farm life and springtime fun with wagon rides, farm animals, hands-on craft activities, and free Easter egg hunts (for ages 6 mos. to 10 yrs.). Prizes were given out to lucky egg hunters with sweets generously provided by R.M. Palmer and Just Born, Inc. The schoolhouse came alive with stories by local author Dori Hoch, along with artist and illustrator Ruth Williams. Music played by the Blue Mountain Band and Keith Brintzenhoff captivated passersby with sounds of the PA Dutch. Mountain Mary was also roaming the grounds to discuss local folklore. The buildings and grounds of the farm were bustling with activity and food to try, provided by our demonstrators. New this year there was a traditional meat smoking demonstration by our friends at Dundore & Heister, natural dyeing techniques, Angora rabbit spinning, and table loom weaving.
