To some extent I have ignored Harold's Cross except for my visits to Mount Jerome Cemetery.

While travelling on the 16 bus today I overheard a group of young American visitors saying that Harold's Cross and nearby was the cool area of Dublin as it is now a hotspot for cafes and restaurants and they also mentioned the Harold's Cross Festival which includes everything from table quizzes to writing workshops and much to do in Harold's Cross Park. As a result of this conversation I decide to get off the bus and visit the park ... I always carry a very small Sony RX0 camera in my pocket.

This 1.25 hectare (3 acres) park was developed in 1894 by the Rathmines / Rathgar Commissioners and officially opened on May 1st 1894. The site of the park was used as commonage from medieval times. Designed by William Sheppard and Sons, “specialists in new parks and dripping pools” and costing £700 to construct, the park is essentially Victorian with a mixture of formal and natural styles. Dublin City Council took over the park in 1934 and has developed flower gardens and a play area while retaining the original design.

There are historical signs in the park explaining the parks history.

Blur of light you experience when travelling on the front of a train into the Jubilee line extention. This was taken on a trip move the vintage 1938 stock tube train from the London Transport Museum at Acton to Stratford. The very first time a vintage train dared venture past Green Park on the line.

Carl "Potter" Wilson doing a fs blunt on the extention on the mini at the indoor park in Skegness. This was the opening of the new plaza. But unfortunately it rained. But this meant that the mini ramp jam went off. Shot on my Bronica SQ-a with some Ilford Delta 400.

The extent of the roof removal can be seen as 68 enters Ballymoney with the 11.05 Londonderry - Bangor. In addition to the passengers, there is a barrow load of parcels waiting for the train.

The current southernmost extent of Loughborough. Three fields now separate the town from Quorn at the closest point, and not much more to Woodhouse. These are pseudo-grandiose and superficially individual, detached houses to sell for the maximum amount of money per acre; the garden space of each is pathetic.

Also, the (very new) paths on the (bland) grassy slopes in between some of these houses were flooded, and it hasn't really been that wet. But hey, the developers have been and gone. You pays your money and, well, that's your lot.

Out of shot, to both the left and the right, are big signs over fields stating that they have been acquired for residential / property developments.

I wonder how long it will be before Leicester and Loughborough eventually join up into one, long suburban corridor, swallowing the small towns and villages in between. Guessing not very long, no matter how much influence and petitioning the residents of the increasingly surrounded settlements have and do.

The westernmost extent of Sullivan's campaign to destroy the villages of the Native Americans who sided with the British. This was ugly business all around and displaced and killed native americans and british allies culminating in the battle at Newtown. John Burgoyne was stalled coming south from Quebec and St Ledger was scared off by Benedict Arnold's campaign against fort Stanwix. Howe was busy trying to glorify himself with a major victory in Philadelphia and Henry Clinton was holed up in New York City, showing no signs of relieved the beleaguered Burgoyne. Sullivan was tapped to go west and destroy the Native American British allies. Ant-indian sentiment was high after Burgoyne allied and sent out thousands of Mohawks Senecas and other tribes to harass rebels. To be fair, their warrior traditions were not well understood and was taken as simple savagery. Native American war was personal and stealthy and brutal. Additionally ritual canabalism (which has been practiced by most societies the world round at some point) ...was considered particularly vile. However it should be noted that hangings and drawings and quarterings were still public spectacles in London. So barbarism is a matter of perspective. As a result the sullivan;s campaign was particularly brutal.

Boyd and parker were rebel officers captured, tied to a free and tortured to death by the tribe at Beards viliage. This site commemorates them and the men who were captured. As it was created in 1928 it is a bit one sided. Tragedy abounded in the revolution and in the true light of history it is hard to fault the Native Americans who responded with equal brutality. to the campaign. They were in a difficult spot....Europeans were closing in to their territories pushing them ever further west. Thus they decided to choose the British as the better ally. THe British at least promised them their own land (modern day Indiana). Additionally the British looked like the better bet to win. The American army and Militias were pretty rough.

The Battle at Newtown is considered a critical battle to collapsing the British northern campaign. But as with all things history there are many competing truths...often complementary truths that should all be known and honored. In this case the campaign was a critical part of the war for Liberty.....In the case of the rebels it was a win. For the Native Americans of Western NY the revolution was also a battle for liberty but ultimatley a defeat....followed by a sad history. I wish in the light of history all these competing truths and and heroic deeds of all men on all sides could be noted. And I so wish the people of the past (what will they say about us in 200 years) had the chance to create a society that was for all the people of the Americas.

Bodmin is a civil parish and historic town in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated south-west of Bodmin Moor.

The extent of the civil parish corresponds fairly closely to that of the town so is mostly urban in character. It is bordered to the east by Cardinham parish, to the southeast by Lanhydrock parish, to the southwest and west by Lanivet parish, and to the north by Helland parish.

The town of Bodmin has played a central role in the development of Christianity in Cornwall, and tradition, legend and history combine to suggest that the area around the Berry Tower was an early focus of settlement. The 12th century ‘life’ of St Petroc states that the saint built two habitations in the place that was later to become Bodmin: one in the valley where the parish church now is, and the other on the hill to the north – at the Berry. Here may also have been the seat of the Cornish bishop Kenstec in the 10th century. The site is located on a prominent spur overlooking the modern town and may have been fortified, as the names Berry, derived from Anglo-Saxon burh, and Dinuurin, which contains Cornish dyn, both suggest. No remains survive to substantiate this however.

The focus of mediæval Bodmin was a long main street stretching west from the parish church. This was a thriving, busy place, with markets, fairs, and many religious institutions including a Priory, a Friary, a hospital, and 13 chapels. There were also numerous guilds – associations formed for social, religious or economic purposes whose activities might include charitable works, raising money for various causes or building projects, and alms giving. By 1470 there were three guilds based at the Berry, the main one being the Guild of the Holy Rood. This guild was associated with a chapel here and at the beginning of the 16th century was responsible for building this tower.

Remarkably, accounts relating to the building of the tower still survive and provide a fascinating insight into the methods, materials and processes involved in such a project. The income for the work came mainly from local donations and gifts, all of which are recorded in the accounts. From the accounts we know that work on the tower commenced in 1501 and that it took ten years to build, growing at a rate of about 6 feet per year. Granite for windows and quoins came from St Austell or Bodmin Moor, but the slate was from a local quarry. During the last four years the furnishings like floors, a bell, lead roof and window fixings were provided. At the same time as the tower was raised, the chapel was extended with a south aisle, whose walls were decorated with murals of St Christopher and St Petroc.

Although work was completed in 1514, the newly refurbished chapel was only in use for just over three decades before the cataclysmic changes of the Reformation forced it to close. By the 18th century, only the tower remained with the chapel reduced to foundations. The present cemetery was established on the site by Bodmin Town Corporation in the 19th century. An interpretation board on the site provides detailed information about the building of the tower.

Standing in front of Berry tower is a mediæval wheel-headed cross of perhaps 12th or 13th century date. This was moved here in 1860 from its original site on Cross Lane at the junction of Berry Lane.

At the foot of the hill on which Berry Tower stands is Bodmin parish church, dedicated to St Petroc, the most important Celtic saint in mediæval Cornwall, whose relics survive in the church, in a 13th century ivory casket. This is one of the largest parish churches in Cornwall, reflecting the importance of Bodmin in the Middle Ages. Here also can be seen the holy well of St Guron, a pillar from the Friary, a good collection of coffin slabs from both the Priory and the Friary and the remains of another guild chapel, that of St Thomas. In the nearby Shire Hall is Bodmin’s Museum, with displays of finds from all these sites.

The extent of ozone depletion for any given period depends on complex interaction between chemical and climatic factors such as temperature and wind. The unusually high levels of depletion in 1988, 1993 and 2002 were due to early warming of the polar stratosphere caused by air disturbances originating in mid-latitudes, rather than by major changes in the amount of reactive chlorine and bromine in the Antarctic stratosphere.

This is the extent of the function left in me today. I got in at all hours after an excellent trivia night at the cricket club then had a 10am cricket start this morning. Somehow I got roped in to this T20 caper. I was in no state to be driving at the start of the days play so I had to get Dad to drive me in. The other handicap I have today is the agony that I'm in from bowling 20 overs after having done extremely little pre-season.

We played two games today and it was one of the most difficult hangovers I've had to suffer through. Tomorrow is not going to be fun.

I planned on heading back to Melbourne tonight but that isn't an option. This is taken right after getting home from cricket, collapsing, scoffing a mum-pizza then feeling slightly human again. It's all too hard today.

To what extent should we take the public observance of Mother's Day?

To some, this Hallmark holiday borders on the sacred. After all, the women who have nurtured us deserve thanks; it's probably good for us to think in those terms, as well.

But, those of us who are privy to the personal thoughts of many people realize that there's more pain out there than most of us realize. People abused by their moms. Folks who are grieving the loss of mothers or children. People in broken relationships. The list goes on. For many of them, Mother's Day is a painful reminder of an ideal they will never have. I've known couples who cannot conceive, and who stay away from church on Mother's Day because it's not a place of refuge that Sunday.

I celebrate the holiday. I still have a wife and a mother-in-law. But, perhaps the holiday should remain more private.

Or, we could return to its original meaning. The Mother's Day Proclamation urged women all over the world to stand up against the actions of their governments as they sent sons off to war . . .

The World War I St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial in France, 40.5 acres in extent, contains the graves of 4,153 of American military dead. The majority died in the offensive that resulted in the reduction of the St. Mihiel salient that threatened Paris. The burial area is divided by Linden alignment trees and paths into four equal plots. At the center is a large sundial surmounted by an American eagle. To the west is a statue of a World War I soldier and at the eastern end is a semi-circular overlook dominated by a sculpture representing a victory vase.

Beyond the burial area to the south is the white stone memorial consisting of a small chapel, a peristyle with a large rose-granite funeral urn at its center, and a map building. The chapel contains a beautiful mosaic portraying an angel sheathing his sword. On two walls of the museum are recorded the names of 284 of the missing. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. On the wall facing the door is a large map of inlaid marble depicting the St. Mihiel Offensive.

This is what this project is about. Pictures like this.

To the right Aislin, best friend Andrew in the middle and Mark to the right :)

I resisted uploading a picture of Mark with the most epic pout I have ever photographed.

Just for dignity's sake :)

I also got an art deadline extention to Thursday thanks to having my driving test tomorrow (which I think/hope I'm probably ready for.. maybe.. we shall see :) ). I needed that. Baadly. Got this up relatively early so I some work now that Ive been given the time.

I might pull this whole thing off yet :)

BIG pictures like this (<<<yes please!)

Oriental White-eye

The Oriental white-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus) is a small passerine bird in the white-eye family. It is a resident breeder in open woodland in tropical Asia, east from the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia, extending to Indonesia and Malaysia. They forage in small groups, feeding on nectar and small insects. They are easily identified by the distinctive white eye-ring and overall yellowish upperparts. Several populations of this widespread species are named subspecies and some have distinctive variations in the extent and shades of yellows in their plumage.

This bird is small (about 8–9 cm long) with yellowish olive upper parts, a white eye ring, yellow throat and vent. The belly is whitish grey but may have yellow in some subspecies. The sexes look similar. The species is widespread and is part of a superspecies complex that includes Zosterops japonicus, Zosterops meyeni and possibly others. The taxonomy of the group is still unclear with some island populations being distinctive while some subspecies are not well supported. The population from Flores, Indonesia for instance is found closer to the pale white-eye. The family itself is now questioned since they are nested along with the Stachyris babblers.

About eleven subspecies are well recognised. These include the nominate form (type locality Bengal, India) which is found from Oman and Arabia, Afghanistan, northern India and extends into China and northern Myanmar. The population in the Western Ghats and hills of southern India is placed in nilgiriensis while salimalii of the Eastern Ghats hills (Shevaroy, Chitteri, Seshachalam, Nallamalai) is sometimes subsumed into the nominate race. The population of the plains of India, Laccadives and Sri Lanka are sometimes placed in egregius (= egregia) but is restricted by other works to the population in Sri Lanka. The populations in southern Myanmar, Thailand and Laos are placed in siamensis. The Nicobar Islands form is nicobaricus and is sometimes also used for the population on the Andaman Islands which are however distinctive and a distinct unnamed population. The populations from southern Thailand to western Cambodia are placed in williamsoni. Other Southeast Asian island forms include auriventer (=aureiventer), buxtoni, melanurus and unicus.

Race occidentis (now often subsumed into the nominate race) of the Western Himalayas has the upper side dark green and the flanks are tinged in brown. The form salimalii has a shorter bill and is brighter yellow-green above. Some authors consider the nominate race to be restricted to Sikkim, Bhutan, Assam and Yunnan and consider the peninsular race as occidentis (or amabilis if the form from Kathiawar described by Koelz is considered valid).

In Sri Lanka, race egregia is smaller and has a brighter back and throat than the endemic Sri Lanka white-eye, Zosterops ceylonensis found in the central hills.

The English and scientific names refer to the conspicuous ring of white feathers round the eyes, zosterops being Greek for 'girdle-eye'.

The species is found in a wide range of habitats from scrub to moist forest. They sometimes occur on mangrove areas such as in the Karachi area. and on islands they may lead a more insectivorous life. They are somewhat rare only in the drier desert regions of western India.

A feral population was detected in San Diego, California in the 1980s and subsequently eradicated.

These white-eyes are sociable, forming flocks which only separate on the approach of the breeding season. They are highly arboreal and only rarely descend to the ground. The breeding season is February to September but April is the peak breeding season and the compact cup nest is a placed like a hammock on the fork of a branch. The nest is made of cobwebs, lichens and plant fibre. The nest is built in about 4 days and the two pale blue eggs are laid within a couple of days of each other. The eggs hatch in about 10 days. Both sexes take care of brooding the chicks which fledge in about 10 days. Though mainly insectivorous, the Oriental white-eye will also eat nectar and fruits of various kinds.

They call frequently as they forage and the usual contact call is a soft nasal cheer. They pollinate flowers when they visit them for flower insects (such as thrips) and possibly nectar (questioned) that form their diet. The forehead is sometimes coloured by pollen leading to mistaken identifications. They have been observed bathing in dew accumulated on leaves.

When nesting, they may mob palm squirrels but being small birds they are usually on the defensive. Their predators include bats (esp. Megaderma lyra) and birds such as the white-throated kingfisher. Endoparasitic Haemosporidia of the genus Haemoproteus and Dorisa have been isolated from the species although these rarely cause death.

Like some other white-eyes, they sometimes steal nest material from the nests of other birds. Cases of interspecific feeding have been noted with white-eyes feeding the chicks of a paradise flycatcher.

Although not strong fliers, they are capable of dispersing in winds and storms to new areas including offshore islands. A feral population of this species established itself in California during the 1980s requiring their capture and destruction. They were captured by luring them using call playback and live decoys into mistnets.
