This shot was captured the same day as the previous upload (the Trillium closeup). Perhaps it will help put that flower, which was among those shown in the clump to the right of the road, into context for you.

Thanks to all who visit, fave, comment, and extend invitations. Your support is much appreciated. I will be sure to visit your work, too

Christmas is less than a fortnight away and nature here in Ostwestfalen is like early Spring. We used Sunday afternoon for an extended hiking tour around home waters of the river Werre in the Löhne area.

The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail is found in most provinces and territories in Canada, as its name implies. Its range extends north of the Arctic Circle in the Yukon, and to Churchill in Manitoba, Little Shagamu River in Ontario, and to Schefferville in Quebec. It does not occur in southern British Columbia, being replaced there by the western tiger swallowtail, Papilio rutulus, or in southwestern Ontario, approximately west of Toronto, where it is replaced by the eastern tiger swallowtail. It has not been reported from Labrador, but has been seen in western Newfoundland. It is seen in the northern third of the United States. Within this range, it is a very common and well-known butterfly, even more so around woodland edges. It is one of the most common puddling species and often hundreds will gather at a single puddle. --------------

Butterflies seem to be in short supply this year so I was pleased to find this swallowtail feeding on the nectar of the honeysuckle.

It's time now for the weekly dose of poppy. Sorry, but I still have some left. I'm surprised by that by myself, because after I didn't find the fields of the last years, I accepted already, that there would be no poppy field photos from me this year. Not with all the will in the world I could reckon that the two spot I found later would produce so many photos I like. Because I try to to make a good mixture in my posts, this will still extend for awhile.

I planted this in my wheelbarrow garden around 18 months ago and although the plant grew, no flowers appeared. Peter told me it was a weed and was going to pull it out. After I threatened him, he decided to leave it alone. Imagine my surprise when this week it decided to flower. I am so excited as I have seen them in gardens in the UK when travelling around.

Roadside Hawk sounds like such a pedestrian name. It’s a common hawk in Costa Rica but quite beautiful in my opinion with its reddish highlights. This Tropical Kingbird, however, didn’t appreciate the beauty and wanted this raptor out of its neighborhood. As usual, the little tough guy got his way and took a brief ride as the hawk was getting out of town. (Roadside Hawk – Buteo magnirostris; Tropical Kingbird - Tyrannus melancholicus) (I changed the identity of the hitchhiker from a Gray-capped Flycatcher thanks to the correction from Larry Waddell, below.) Apologies. My powers of control don't quite extend to getting all fifteen ponies around me to look in the same direction, but I'm working on it and I know that no matter what the weather is like this weekend I shall pay them another visit. This is a living landscape and I'm besotted!

These finches are still here! They are rare at this locality, so I'm surprised at how long they are lingering (I saw 6 this morning). They DO like to raise their crests - seems like a Cassin's characteristic. Green growing things popping up in the background makes for nice photographic conditions!

Southern Alps, New Zealand.

The Southern Alps (Māori: Kā Tiritiri o te Moana) are a mountain range extending along much of the length of New Zealand's South Island, reaching its greatest elevations near the island's western side.

The range runs 500 km north to south. The tallest peak is Aoraki / Mount Cook, the highest point in New Zealand at 3,724 metres (12,218 ft) and there are sixteen other points that exceed 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) in height. The mountains are cut through with glacial valleys and lakes.

The Southern Alps lie along a geological plate boundary, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, with the Pacific Plate to the southeast pushing westward and colliding with the northward-moving Indo-Australian Plate to the northwest.

I apologize for the long absence. Turns out, flickr is inaccessible in China. Who knew?

The Bay of Kotor ( known simply as Boka) is about 28 km long with a shoreline extending 107.3 km. It is surrounded by two massifs of the Dinaric Alps: the Orjen mountains to the west, and the Lovcen mountains to the east. The narrowest section of the bay, the 2300 m long Verige Strait, is only 340 m wide at its narrowest point. The bay is a ria of the vanished Bokelj River that used to run from the high mountain plateaus of Mount Orjen. The bay is composed of several smaller broad bays, united by narrower channels. The bay inlet was formerly a river system. Tectonic and karstification processes led to the disintegration of this river. After heavy rains the waterfall of Sopot spring at Risan appears, and Škurda, another well-known spring runs through a canyon from Lovcen. The outermost part of the bay is the Bay of Tivat (Teodo). On the seaward side is the Bay of Herceg Novi (Castelnuovo), at the main entrance to the Bay of Kotor. The inner bays are the Bay of Risan to the northwest and the Bay of Kotor to the southeast. The Verige Strait represents the bay's narrowest section and is located between Cape St. Nedjelja and Cape Opatovo; it separates the inner bay east of the strait from the Bay of Tivat.

Tin, Copper and Arsenic were mined here until the end of the 19th century. The mine shafts extend several hundred metres/yards under the sea. The mine was abandoned when it became economically unviable.

Long-beaked common dolphins are gregarious and are often seen ‘porpoising' at the water surface, breaching and bow-riding for extended periods of time. They are also highly vocal and like the short-beaked common dolphin, can be heard whistling to each other when they are above the surface of the water. They typically travel in large social groups numbering between 10 and 50 dolphins.

ELEGANT DABBLING DUCK, the adult male see here, has a chocolate-brown head and nape, with the white breast extending as a stripe up the side of the head. The plumage is otherwise grey and finely marked, but note the cream and black stern, and that long pointed tail that is often held at an angle. One of my very favourite ducks, its lifting its head and neck high, and about to bid a hasty retreat, on seeing me, and who could blame it...........

BEST viewed large, the duck not me...........lol.

++++++++++++++++++++ THANK YOU for your time and support, love reading your kind comments The weekend is almost upon us, hope you all have a wonderful time, God bless, happy snapping but stay safe...
