"A painted prayer for peace in Venezuela - created on the 36th anniversary of my mother's passing, August 5, 2017.

I am always fascinated to learn of international devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary - through miraculous visitations; and a dear friend of mine, born in Venezuela, showed me a prayer card of Virgen de Coromoto 3 years ago - which partly inspired this new tribute.

The devotion dates back to the early 1650s; which is succinctly summarised in the Wikipedia link below. Peace ! " - Stephen B. Whatley.

Roxy's burlesque theater billboard, across the streets does not shut off till 3am.

*my last attempt of portraying this great artist /after so many attempts to catch at least one of his multiple personalities/ In his previous lives, he had a "trompa grande" when it came expressing his views on art and reduced anyone daring to show him their work to trash and worth, yet he was admired and adored by his pupils. thirty years after his demise, those that remembered him referred to him as the "gran hijo de puta" /son of a bitch.

p.s. I had the privilege to see some of his own art shown to me by his widow /none of which has ever been shown anywhere/ and I am convinced had she allowed the paintings been shown, they would be hailed as the most advanced of the 20th. century. Than again, who am I to judge?!?

A recent photograph of the Tower Hill Underpass, recently renamed the Tower Hill Subway - the main entrance portal, leading from Tower Hill Station to the Tower of London - decorated since 2001 with giant reproductions of the work of British artist Stephen B Whatley (1965-).

The expressionist painter was commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces in December 1999 to undertake the creation of a series of 30 oil paintings detailing the history and iconic symbols of the historic fortress; London's top tourist attraction; ultimately to vibrantly transform the previously dark walkway for decades to come.

Many of the 30 works - created between January and August 2000 - were painted on location around and even within the walls of the Tower of London. The original oil paintings which hang within the Tower range in size from 40 x 30in and 60 x 90in; and shown here, from left are:

'Queen's Guardsman' ; Crown Jewels (1) - one of two paintings of the Crown Jewels, inspired by studies made directly from the priceless jewels, on location in the Jewel House; Panoramic View of The Tower - painted on location from the then BBC studio, used to film river events; and The Interior of The Chapel Royal of St Peter Ad Vincular - inspired by charcoal drawings made on location in the chapel, within the grounds of the Tower.

Stephen B Whatley then regularly oversaw the delicate process of reproducing the vibrance of his paintings onto steel vitreous enamel panels, at Escol Panels in Wellingborough; which was reported as an Apple Colorsync Success story; achieved by the expertise of Typemaker Ltd.

In March 2001 the installation of the panels was unveiled; and a private viewing of the original paintings was given at the Vaults, in the Tower; in celebration.

In June 2004, Stephen B Whatley was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II & HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, in recognition of his major series of work, at a reception in the Banqueting Hall of the Tower of London - where the original paintings were exhibited - to celebrate 4 years of completion of refurbishment of the Tower & its environs.

The work of Stephen B Whatley is in collections worldwide; & in public collections including the London Transport Museum, the BBC & the Royal Collection of HM Queen Elizabeth II. His press includes The London Times, The Guardian, the New York Times & TIME.

A new Catholic tribute drawing paying tribute to Saint Thomas Aquinas by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley.

The artist, an Anglican convert after years trying to overcome early tragedy in his life, often feels what he calls a 'Divine push' to create such works, with prayers for strength and healing - and this tribute in charcoal was created on the Feast Day, January 28, 2017, of this Italian 13th century Saint; who looked to the Holy Spirit in all his theological and philosophical writings.

In 2013 Stephen B. Whatley's exhibition 'Paintings From Prayer' was exhibited at Westminster Cathedral in London; and his vibrant series of 30 paintings commissioned by the Tower of London are reproduced permanently throughout Tower Hill Underpass - the main entrance to the Tower from Tower Hill Station.

Juan Ramon Mantecon aka "mantequa" to his friends is considered one of Spain's greatest poets

of the 20th. century, writer, painter and inventor of the Latin American concept of "Poesia Pura"

/pure poetry/ In 1956 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Millions of followers mourned his death at the age of 99. Many still do.

p.s. most of his works have been translated into dozens of languages; the above, to my

knowledge was not.

His works have been the inspiration for many of my humble paintings and drawings in the past.

Expressionist painter Stephen B Whatley photographed yesterday beneath his paintings The Sacred Heart of Jesus (2010) and Saint James (2013) - two of 19 oil paintings currently on show in his exhibition 'Paintings From Prayer' amidst the grandeur of The Rectory, St James's Church, Spanish Place, London W1, until May 19th.

Visitors to the exhibition have been expressing the deep feeling and 'light' they receive from the original works that include tributes to Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints including St Anthony, St Clare of Assisi & St Kateri Tekakwitha - painted on her day of canonisation last year. Painting on special anniversaries is one of the statements the artist often feels compelled to make.

Stephen B Whatley was born in London in 1965 and paints a wide range of subjects including cityscapes, landscapes, architecture & still life. He is also a portrait painter & his many sitters include stars of stage and screen including actors Dame Judi Dench, Susan Hampshire, Julie Walters, Barbara Windsor & Sian Phillips & TV presenter Sarah Greene. His work is in collections worldwide & public collections including the BBC Heritage, the London Transport Museum, the Royal Collection of Queen Elizabeth II & The Carrollton School of The Sacred Heart, Miami; and has been published in numerous press features including the London Times, the New York Times, Hello! magazine & TIME.

Whatley's work is probably most known from his commissioned paintings of Buckingham Palace, featured on advertisements on the London Underground in 1999 & 2000; and his commission of 30 vibrant paintings for the Tower of London which since 2001 are permanently reproduced throughout Tower Hill Underpass that leads to the Tower of London, from Tower Hill Station.

A blessing…& a missing. It is always quite a wrench for a working artist to lose the original work that comes from the heart, soul & prayers with such passion. This work is going to the most appreciative of collectors, from all he has already expressed.

The work of Stephen B. Whatley has been published in TIME magazine and is in private collections worldwide; and in public collections including BBC Heritage, The Royal Collection of Queen Elizabeth II, London Transport Museum & Westminster Cathedral - which staged his 2013 exhibition 'Paintings From Prayer'.

His series of 30 paintings commissioned by the Tower of London in 2000 is permanently reproduced through out Tower Hill Underpass, open daily, that leads to the Tower of London.

*"todavia estaban abiertas" /they were still open/ from the popular lament by Spain's greatest poets: Gustavo Adolfo Becquer and translated into English by John Masefield.

They closed her eyes

That were still open;

They hid her face

With a white linen,

And, some sobbing

Others in silence,

From the sad bedroom

All came away.

The nightlight in a dish

Burned on the floor;

It threw on the wall

The bed's shadow

One saw sometime

Drawn in Sharp line

The body's shape.

The dawn appeared.

At it's first whiteness

With its thousand noises

The town awoke.

Before that contrast

Of light and darkness,

Of life and strangeness

I thought a moment,

Oh, my God, how lonely

The Dead are.

p.s. enticing; yet do not wish to join them!

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was one of the most famous Expressionist Norwegian painters. His style, known as symbolism, which mainly focused on life, love, anxiety, and loneliness played a significant role in the late 20th-century art, especially in German expressionism. The dark color and somber tones, the exaggerated forms, and the contrasting lines in his designs portrayed his psychological state. His most iconic artwork, The Scream (1893), which depicts the agonized face and radical expressions, symbolizes anxiety, one of human's most common psychological conditions. We have digitally enhanced some of his notable works from the public domain and made them available for you to download under the creative commons 0 license.
