Australian singer & actress Helen Reddy (1941-2020), who died in Los Angeles at 78 on September 29, in a portrait painted in 1997 by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley.

Ms Reddy sat for the artist, during one sitting, in her London hotel suite, in Piccadilly, London, during her starring role in the West End production of the musical drama, Blood Brothers.

Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1941 Helen Reddy moved to the USA in the 1960s and had a string of music hits, including her feminist anthem from 1972, I Am Woman - which was featured in the film, Sex In The City 2, 38 years later in 2010.

Reddy's eclectic career included writing and film roles including Airport 1975 (1974) and Disney's Pete's Dragon (1977)- to which she brought her gift of singing.

LET MERCY LEAD: Rich Mullins (1955-1997) - 20th Anniversary Tribute. 2017

A new portrait tribute of the American contemporary Christian singer and songwriter, Rich Mullins (1955-1997) painted at the beginning of September 2017. Rich Mullins was tragically killed in an auto accident on this date, September 19 in 1997.

The oil painting was commissioned by a new American collector of mine, whose heartfelt and perceptive appreciation of my expressionist work has made her a dear friend too; and indeed I feel I know - have always known - this great singer and man of faith, like a friend.

I was touched to learn that his birthday was October 21 - also the date that the first native American Indian, Kateri Tekakwitha was made a Saint by the Catholic church in 2012 - so fitting, as in the late 1980s, the singer worked as a music teacher on a Native American Indian Reserve in Arizona.

The art of Rich Mullins was his music - through which he constantly expressed his unwavering faith in the Mercy of Jesus Christ - though he was far from a traditional Christian. Whilst he had a great devotion to the traditions of Christianity, through his deep innate faith - and indeed was moving towards the Catholic faith (with a great affection for Saint Francis of Assisi & Saint Elijah), at the time of his tragic passing - his early life was immersed in The Quakers testimonies of peace and social justice - that later inspired many of his lyrics.

He refused to hide the many personal life battles and struggles he encountered and indeed they became the foundation of many of his poetic lyrics; and the contemporary 'sermons' - often sprinkled with self- deprecating humour - that he felt lead to share at his concerts - all with the heartfelt aim and belief to share the message of the Mercy of Jesus - for all.

Jesus did not exclude anyone in society: His was - is - the most Unifying Heart - and this message resonates from the heart and soul of Rich Mullins - as is vividly evident from the quote from the man himself, with which I end this tribute.

This painting was as much about capturing the soulful essence of the man, through a selection of photographs (ranging from portraits to captures of him playing at his concerts) as about his music - so much of which I absorbed, in the build-up to the creation; and during breaks when painting over the duration of 3 days. Indeed the portrait's title was inspired by one of my favourites, 'Let Mercy Lead' (1995).

Rich's recording history dated from 1981 to 1997 - and his songs "I See You' Cry The Name' , 'An Awesome God' , We Are Not As Strong As We Think we Are', 'Elijah', 'Hold Me Jesus', 'Step By Step' 'Green' and 'Verge of A Miracle' are among those that echoed in my heart as I painted with prayers.

"Jesus said whatever you do to the least of these my brothers you’ve done it to me. And this is what I’ve come to think. That if I want to identify fully with Jesus Christ, who I claim to be my Savior and Lord, the best way that I can do that is to identify with the poor. This I know will go against the teachings of all the popular evangelical preachers. But they’re just wrong. They’re not bad, they’re just wrong. Christianity is not about building an absolutely secure little niche in the world where you can live with your perfect little wife and your perfect little children in a beautiful little house where you have no gays or minority groups anywhere near you. Christianity is about learning to love like Jesus loved and Jesus loved the poor and Jesus loved the broken-hearted..." - Rich Mullins, 1997.

Making art accessible to everyone…as Christmas approaches, fine art prints, personally signed by the artist (and dedicated on request), make a unique and vibrant gift - here, 'Tower Bridge 2000', one of the most popular prints of artist Stephen B. Whatley - particularly with Americans.

This print comes with a Royal history : the original oil painting of Tower Bridge (Oil on canvas, 40 x 40in/102 x 102cm) is one of the 30 paintings the British artist was commissioned to paint for the Tower of London in 2000; colourfully charting the Tower's history and landmarks in the area.

The painting can also be seen daily, reproduced even larger than its original size along with the series of works, in Tower Hill Underpass, outside Tower Hill Station in London; the main pedestrian entrance to the Tower of London.

Some of the artist's Royal works - including a new portrait of Prince Harry & Meghan Markle (now the Duke & Duchess of Sussex) - were published in a 3-page feature on the artist's work in Majesty magazine in May 2018, just before the Royal Wedding.

To see full details about ordering a print, to anywhere in the world, visit the direct link to the Prints page of the Stephen B. Whatley website - where you can also take a tour of many original oil paintings and drawings currently available.

Exhausted but exhlilerated, expressionist painter Stephen B Whatley photographed at around 7pm on June 21st, after almost 9 hours painting on location in N. Wales - with his painting of this beautiful Tudor house, dating from the 16th century.

Memories of peaceful independence in Hong Kong......part of the view of Victoria Harbour Hong Kong and the commissioned painting it inspired in May 2014, from a 23rd floor balcony in Mid-Levels, by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley.

For the artist, who created the oil painting on location over the course of a day at the beginning of May, the vibrant colours and abstractions are his reality inspired by the spectacular panorama.

To the left of the photograph and interpreted in the painting is the IFC (International Finance Centre) Building, the fourth tallest building in the Greater China region; & the eighth tallest office building in the world.

Stephen B Whatley's major public commissions include architectural paintings commissioned to promote the BBC, Buckingham Palace & the Tower of London - where a Walkway of his series of 30 commissioned paintings welcomes visitors to the Tower, from Tower Hill Station.

"St Pauls From The South Bank" an oil painting by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley lights up the sun room at the home of one of the artist's collectors near Guildford, Surrey, UK; on a visit last year.

Vibrant contemporary art can accent a room's furnishings and as much of this artist's work is in collections worldwide, especially the USA, it is rare that he gets to photograph his work on location in the homes and establishments where it hangs.

Aside from private collections, Whatley's work hangs in Buckingham Palace, as part of The Royal Collection; and other public collections include BBC Heritage, London Transport Museum, Newman University & Westminster Cathedral - whilst his series 30 paintings commissioned by the Tower of London is permanently reproduced through out Tower Hill Underpass, open daily, that leads to the Tower of London.

My painting of Saint James on display in the sanctuary of St James’s RC Church, Spanish Place in London W1 - just after the special Mass celebrating the Feast Day of St James, on July 25, 2025.

Sadly, I was unable to attend the evening Mass this year and my attention was drawn to this beautiful photograph - showing my painting of Saint James on display - taken by the Spanish Embassy and posted on Twitter (X.com) - very touching to see.

My 2013 painting was acquired by the church that year and hangs usually in the Rectory connected to St James’s.

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) was one of the most famous Expressionist Norwegian painters. His style, known as symbolism, which mainly focused on life, love, anxiety, and loneliness played a significant role in the late 20th-century art, especially in German expressionism. The dark color and somber tones, the exaggerated forms, and the contrasting lines in his designs portrayed his psychological state. His most iconic artwork, The Scream (1893), which depicts the agonized face and radical expressions, symbolizes anxiety, one of human's most common psychological conditions. We have digitally enhanced some of his notable works from the public domain and made them available for you to download under the creative commons 0 license.

Happy 4th July from British artist Stephen B. Whatley - pictured here in London last month, with his portrait of Prince Harry; just before the oil painting was collected for shipment to the USA , to a new collector.

The youngest son of The Prince of Wales & Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997), Prince Harry recently gave a ground-breaking interview to America's Newsweek magazine.

"A painted prayer for peace in Venezuela - created on the 36th anniversary of my mother's passing, August 5, 2017.

I am always fascinated to learn of international devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary - through miraculous visitations; and a dear friend of mine, born in Venezuela, showed me a prayer card of Virgen de Coromoto 3 years ago - which partly inspired this new tribute.

The devotion dates back to the early 1650s; which is succinctly summarised in the Wikipedia link below. Peace ! " - Stephen B. Whatley.
