This painting is part of a series I am presently working on and is best viewed on black.

The above writing is a passage from a book by 20th, century greatest writer, Jorge Luis Borges written the year before his passing and expresses word for word what I wish to have writen on my own tomb stone, if and when I can afford to buy one. Unfortunately it is virtually untranslatable without loosing much of it's meaning.

This set came about after finding her favorite song after 40 years on You Tube; a beautiful new version of a old classic coming back with a vengeance: You Tube: Mar Azul-Cesaria Evora - Marisa Monte.

*percance literally a tossing, not goring, usually with the bulls head and between the horns, not fatal at the moment but with serious consequences in later life due to internal injuries sustained by blow.

PS I have attempted to draw the feel of being hit by a ton of mass, but most just came out a blur, the above is the best I could do to convey the image at the point of impact. Not at all artistic and I certainly don't expect any one to comment.

PS the above is from personal experience being tossed, fortunately without consequences except being black and blue for a couple of weeks

*from photograph, presently at work on his portrait. Lucky Cienfuegos, cosidered at one time, one of America's greatest poets of the 1970's, now but sadly forgotten; Lucky, originally from Cuba, settled in Manhattan in 1969, writing poems describing the life of emigrant artist's living and working in the U.S.

Lucky was one of the creators of the Nuyorican art movement, later becoming a leading figure in theater productions as well. His poems, were widely distributed via "Xerox" copies and were read and endorsed by other leading poets such as Che Guevarra. None of his poems were ever published by main stream publishing houses, yet they were read and cherished by the thousands mostly illiterate of the so called "third world" countries and of course the "Banana Republics" as they were referred to in the 70's.

*artist's collection.

The great poet, writer, philosopher, Mircea Eilade* wrote: "The artist who paints not because he wants to but because he has to, but knows not what he paints needs one, /shaman, psychiatrist/ for only he can open the doors to the understanding of his art, help him understand himself and give purpose to his creations. Once the artist has learned to "read" his art, he may find peace with himself and through his art may be able to heal others."

translation my own, from my diaries.

Before one can become an shaman, one must have a brain wash /not to be confused with the negative term: "brainwashing" what we used to call: "lavado cerebral"

*Flavio, no pictures, please!

*from a selection of sketches, drawings and portraits of people known to artist, their dreams, anxieties and life styles as perceived by artist. Sketchbooks are the diaries artists carry in their heads until put on paper, they are made entirely from the stuff we carry in our heads, they are not copies of other people's art and are not made to please anyone except artist who may or my not use them in future for the making of art. They are neither good or bad; I don't even know if they can be categorized as art, all i know they are revealing to what we feel within ourselves and what we think of those that have influenced our art. The portraits are not as they or the world sees them but as we perceive them to be. In short they are nothing but impressions of them at the moment which can often change within minutes or hours. There are some of course who never change for the better or worse. When viewing set, should anyone be interested in the character or image drawn, you are welcome to question them in my comment box and I will gladly answer your queries.

Thank you!

p.s. I am posting them with the intend of publishing several hundred of them in a art book with notations on how some of them evolved into paintings, most of which appeared subconsciously.

*after some thirty years since practicing "woodpeckering", I have discovered last november that, Lena Schmidt, is not only reviving this wonderful art expression but taking it further, creating unbelievably beautiful works of art. For those interested, I highly recommend viewing her stream, In particular her "NE 41st. street" rendering which has inspired me to step back in time to create a whole new set which I am at present working on and may turn into prints on paper.

*fireworks, rockets, BBQ and a trip to the moon; the painting was done after the holiday on a stretched plastic tablecloth with stars and stripes still visible, the middle got burned and there are some salsa stains that mixed quite well into the paint as I was applying it. This wonderfully spirited rendering would have never happened, had I not emptied our trash in the bin before our weekly pickup and found it there discarded by members of my family.
