Does anybody know the name of the species?
With each passing second the landscape changes and the expression of nature's face changes once again. Pausing to take it all in, I step back to really see what is there. What strikes me are the peaks that are touched with alpenglow and the clouds that look like puffs of charcoal smoke. The blue is intense and the mist lingers on the waters edge.
It all seems distant now, quieter than a few moments ago. There is no sound except for me, and its moments like this that are the reward.
Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, don’t be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. It’s not where you’d expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. When they fly you’ll see a flash of color in the wings – yellow if you’re in the East, red if you’re in the West – and a bright white flash on the rump.

Dedicated to all builders and carpenters (especially my dad) who take pride in their craftsmanship, respect the grain of the wood, and mourn the loss of trees from our planet in equal measure. A relic from my distant, distant past, and definitely a safety hazard by today's standards but I loved playing with this puzzle.

Wander through narrow historic streets where quaint old houses in the Sino-Portuguese style rub shoulders with traditional wooden Chinese buildings. Some of these old-world relics have been restored and are home to little boutique cafes and restaurants, and others remain in a glorious state of decay. Hidden in amongst them are Chinese temples, beautiful streets of art, and a village mosque where the waft of grilled meat fills the air as local Muslim street vendors sell halal satay skewers.
Nang Ngam road is particularly picturesque.
