1st July saw the return of National Express services, after they had suspended services due to the virus, they began with a much reduced level of service, with some route alterations, this has meant the past 2 weeks there have been a number of altered route numbers, for instance the 501 has been re-numbered the 903, and the 404 to the 405. The route has also been starting/ending at Plymouth instead of Penzance. An increase in service levels, and a return to previous numbering happens from tomorrow (13th July)

I looked through my slides taken 30 years ago this week on the Cape Mountaineer tour in South Africa and decided to scan this picture obtained during an outstanding session at Kraankuil. Just after dawn we witnessed a number of freight workings at speed along the Kimberley - De Aar main line. This one featured a modified class 25NC No 3454 with a dual Lempor exhaust system, the chimneys being arranged side by side rather than in line. The loco also had modified smoke deflectors with a curve at the top clearly seen in this picture. This is the last time that I saw steam hauled freight trains at express speeds. 26th July 1990.
Deep in the forest near Cadmans pool I caught sight of this forest pony galloping back to rest of the herd after much distant neighing and whinnying. I did take cover behind a tree when i heard his hooves getting closer !

Tijdens een rit van Olen onderweg naar Leuven kwam ik wegens indringers in/op de sporen in Begijnendijk een half uur later dan gepland aan in Aarschot. Hier eindigde de rit voor mijn break in plaats van in Leuven, opnieuw wegens personen in de sporen. Ik besloot een bus te nemen naar Leuven en net toen deze vertrok reden de treinen opnieuw.. Gelukkig reed de bus via de snelweg waardoor ik in theorie mijn aansluiting met de IC naar Eupen net zou halen. Dat lukte niet (De lijn) en zo was ik een uur gestrand in Leuven. Het idee was om tijd te doven met de klassieke IC via L36 naar Luik te gaan. Tijdens het wachten kwam er opeens een 21 met 2 27ers door het station gereden. De trein reed parallel met de IC naar Genk via Landen en die besloot ik te nemen, in de hoop dat de Kinkempois-express achter die van mij aan ging en niet voor mijn trein.. Dit gebeurde ook, maar nu kwam het volgende spannende: Zon. Tijdens de rit was het afwisseling van fotowolk en zon. Eenmaal aangekomen in Landen was het precies compleet gedaan: de lucht die naar de zon toe ging zag er allesbehalve blauw uit, op uitzondering van 1 piepklein gaatje in de verte, die de foto uiteindelijk deed lukken.
Zo kon ik toch met een redelijk opgeklaarde lucht een mooi transport fotograferen. De 21ers worden nu in Kinkempois onderhouden en dat betekend dat de loc's compleet verwaarloosd gaan worden.
