The Glacier Express is an express train connecting railway stations of the two major mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz in the center of the Swiss Alps. The train is not an "express" in the sense of being a high-speed train, but rather in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for an eight-hours-long journey. The Glacier Express is known as the slowest express train in the world and traverses a 291-kilometre-long (181 mi) journey through the heart of the Swiss Alps, over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels, scaling the highest point of its journey at the Oberalp Pass at 2033 meters (6670 ft) above sea level.
The entire line is metre gauge (narrow gauge railway), and 23.9 km-large (14.9 mi) portion of it use a rack-and-pinion system both for ascending steep grades and to control descent.

DSB ME 1513 hauling night train P 233 "Nord-Express" Oostende – København between Glumsø und Ringsted. Passengers from London would have left Victoria station the day before at 12.05 by the boat train for Ramsgate.
I should at least have expected DSB's local coaches from Rødby at the front of the train as usual. But I did not expect the exotic belgian vehicles at the obstructed rear with DB's and sleeping cars in the middle. I should have chosen another angle, but I never got a second chance for this train.

1st July saw the return of National Express services, after they had suspended services due to the virus, they began with a much reduced level of service, with some route alterations, this has meant the past 2 weeks there have been a number of altered route numbers, for instance the 501 has been re-numbered the 903, and the 404 to the 405. The route has also been starting/ending at Plymouth instead of Penzance. An increase in service levels, and a return to previous numbering happens from tomorrow (13th July)

I looked through my slides taken 30 years ago this week on the Cape Mountaineer tour in South Africa and decided to scan this picture obtained during an outstanding session at Kraankuil. Just after dawn we witnessed a number of freight workings at speed along the Kimberley - De Aar main line. This one featured a modified class 25NC No 3454 with a dual Lempor exhaust system, the chimneys being arranged side by side rather than in line. The loco also had modified smoke deflectors with a curve at the top clearly seen in this picture. This is the last time that I saw steam hauled freight trains at express speeds. 26th July 1990.

Having left Paris on a train to Nevers we have stopped at Cosne to change from electric to steam and crews. There is a wonderful Sunday evening atmosphere on the station with the train windows open ( yeah, open - you could then!! ) and everyone making their goodbyes after visiting friends at the weekend. SNCF 241P 8 looks and is enormous and will take me onward with consumate ease.

TE2000 (DN33775) SN12EGZ seen at Westfield London between White City and Shepherd's Bush, which started to work on Express route 607 towards Uxbridge.
Exactly 3 months later since 207/607 was changed, 2000 has recently got a newer Greenford blind set, therefore now being capable to run on the express route.
