Back in 2009, the Scarborough Spa Express was routed from York via Harrogate and Leeds. Here LMSR class 5 no. 45407 'The Lancashire Fusilier' enters Knaresborough on 22nd July with the outward working.
'Velay Express' No. 101 is seen commencing a run past near the hamlet of Charron, a few kilometres north of Tence, one of the towns along the route. Just after 14.00pm on 6.3.2020, during the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway's 2020 Spring Gala, sees the early afternoon 'Express Passenger' service from Keighley to Oxenhope storm up the incline towards Ingrow West. LMSR Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 No 45212 is piloted by USA Class 160 2-8-0 No 5820 'Big Jim' - one very powerful combination. Again this being another shot of only two worldwide!

Shortly after sunrise on a warm April morning, United States Sugar's high-stepping Pacific #148 leads a short "Sugar Express" train around the north leg of the wye at Keela, Florida, just outside Clewiston, heading for the cane block. On this particular morning, the train was performing for a photo shoot organized by the railroad and attended by more than 40 photographers from all over the world.
Although normally lettered for United States Sugar Corporation, this particular event featured the locomotive lettered in the livery of her first owner, the Florida East Coast Railway. The locomotive worked the FEC from the time she was first delivered in 1920, until 1952, when she was sold to US Sugar, where she worked the cane fields for another decade. Today, the cane traffic is largely handled by diesel-electric locomotives and the 148 is the primary power on a new steam tourist operation called the "Sugar Express", which operates on a portion of the US Sugar Railroad, between Clewiston and Lake Placid, Florida.
This was the last remaining coach in this version of Finglands livery, which it would have worn from new 10 years earlier, and the only example that I managed to capture on film.
I had plenty more chances to get it in the later stages of its life here, as it notched up an impressive 22 years of service, before being sent the very short distance to ADT Auctions at Belle Vue in August 1997. There it was bought by Morris Travel at Carmarthen, who got another three years out of it, so it just squeezed in 25 years in total.

Originally due for delivery as D-AHLB, this registration wasn't used and the aircraft was delivered to a lessor and leased to Hapag-Lloyd as D-AHLD in Dec-90. It was returned to the lessor in Nov-98 and leased to MALEV Hungarian Airlines as HA-LER the following month. It was returned to the lessor and re-leased to Hapag-Lloyd as D-AHLD in Mar-04 when it was operated for Hapag-Lloyd Express. It was repainted in 'T-Mobile' logojet livery in Feb-06. The aircraft returned to the lessor in Dec-07. It was leased to Aerolineas Argentinas as LV-BNM in Jan-08. In Jun-13 it was returned to the lessor and permanently retired at Orlando-Sanford, FL, USA. It was last noted still at Sanford in Aug-15 and was subsequently broken up.

When the Trans-Mongolian Express made one of two scheduled stops on its trip across China, I was out of the train and on the platform in an instant. It was smokers and photographers at 50 paces. Train stops in China, Mongolia and Russia are a risky business, the train departs without any announcement, or even a blast of the train's horn. Rule Number 1, never stray far from the train, Rule Number 2, keep a close eye on the (in this case) lady in blue, because when she disappears, the steps will be raised, the doors will be locked and the train will disappear too.
Our train was enormous, consisting of Mongolian cars with a string of Chinese cars, and a Chinese dining car, attached at the back of the train. All the Chinese cars were removed at the Chinese border.
Ever the intrepid traveller, I had lunch in the Chinese dining car. It was a relic from the 1950, a Soviet built car that hadn't been cleaned since Mao died. The floor was awash with water (they said the air conditioning had failed), there were only four items available from an extensive menu, all were served cold, as was the boiled rice. The food was quite nice nonetheless.
The dining car ran out of food before dinner time, if you didn't have a stash of raman noodles, it was slim pickings for dinner.
We crossed the border into Mongolia in the wee small hours, the Chinese dining car was replaced with a Mongolian car that did not open until 7 o'clock: it only had one item on the menu. If scrambled eggs were your thing, breakfast was good.
