Delightful family groups of elephants were fun to see in the Shire River at the Mvuu Camp in Malawi.
Yes, the forest nemesis. Not overly big one's, just enough to trip the trekker. Apart from that, they contrast well with the path ahead in both colour and growth.
In the 7th century (around 630-640), King Dagobert I gave the monk Amand land, located between two rivers, the Scarpe and the Elnon, to found a monastery.
At the death of the monk Amand, around 670, the abbey of Saint-Amand was still only a small monastery. 150 years later, as early as the 9th century, it was one of the most important abbeys in the Carolingian kingdom (which was ruled by the King of the Franks (“Charlemagne”).
The Tower, former entrance of the abbey church, 82 meters high, was built from 1626 to 1640. Surrounded by two small turrets, its architecture is specific to the region of Flanders and the department of the north.
Legend has it that in the 6th century the young monk Amand, the founder of the city, succeeded thanks to God’s help in bringing down a huge snake.
Inside is the Abbatial Tower Museum where Almond earthenware is exhibited, including beautiful local productions of the 18th century.
At the top of the Tower, the melodies of the 48 bells of the carillon dating from 1640 resonate in the city of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux thanks to the small squares dug in the stone. This tradition, well established in the Northern Department, dates back to the 18th century, when monks played carillon for religious ceremonies. Today, a carillonneur school exists in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux.
Old car dealership signage exposed by tear off. The Essex brand of automobiles was produced from 1919 until 1933 making this some pretty historic signage. Along the 4200 block of SW Adams Street in Peoria Illinois.

Très belle réalisation dans un endroit merveilleux.
And I’m not talking about my little green buddy. He was perched on a tangle of floating plants in the middle of the bayou and there was no way of getting close to him without being noticed. He stopped foraging when I arrived and departed soon after I took this shot. You can manage “almost” walking on water when you are as light as this little character…with the help of a floating mass of vegetation. Green Heron foraging on Horsepen Bayou. I might add that he’s still dressed in his breeding colors and the blue lores and the salmon-colored legs can still be seen clinging on to this Greenie.

A pair of kioea, bristled-thighed curlews, in a small migratory flock hunt invertebrates in a grassy knoll adjacent to a north shore beach. An annual trans-Pacific migrant nesting in western Alaska and eastern Siberia, some of the French Polynesian cohort selects the Hawaiian archipelago as a mid-migration rest stop and possibly a non-nesting destination. The migration route traverses thousands of miles of open ocean taking multiple non-stop days and nights. With a distinctive profile from a long decurved bill used for foraging in tall grass, mud, sand, and exposed reef flats, this bristle-thighed curlew exhibits name sake bristle-like feathers around the thighs that are the field mark that differentiates it from the similar looking whimbrel. Kioea, bristle-thighed curlew, Numenius tahitiensis.
The snow has melted from the local community gardens, leaving leaning fences and exposed vole tunnels as the only evidence of last Winter's ferocity. Now the gardens are filled with signs of Spring - waves of hungry birds and gardeners eager to begin planting.
Happy Fence Friday, my friends. And Happy Easter if you celebrate it, as well! Have a wonderful weekend.
The amount of light that can damage your eyes depends on the brightness of the light and how long you're exposed to it:
Sunlight
Staring directly at the sun for even a few seconds can cause permanent retinal damage.
Dim light
Staring directly into a dim light, like a reading light, for more than a few seconds can cause discomfort.
Chronic exposure
Exposure to light that's not as intense over days or weeks can also cause permanent eye damage. This is called photo-oxidative damage and can injure the retina.
The iris, the coloured part of your eye, is your eye's main defence against bright light. When intense light hits your eye, the iris constricts your pupil to protect your retina.
Snow blindness, also known as photokeratitis, is a painful eye condition that occurs when the cornea is exposed to too much ultraviolet (UV) light: Snow blindness is a type of sunburn that affects the eyes. It's caused by damage to the cornea, the transparent front layer of the eye, from UV rays.

The 1st day of our trip had us heading for Reykjanes. The previous evening we managed to see the erupting volcano with a bit of ducking and diving around the security but it was all perfectly legal what we did and being with responsible adults I knew I was in safe hands. lol. We arrived at the Lighthouse to windy conditions. Our Co-Driver promptly jumped out of the car to ascertain what way the wind was blowing. (Always a stickler for accuracy) so we could get the steam at its best.
With the water level on Horsepen Bayou finally returning to its seasonal depth and exposing the mud flats, fall and winter shorebirds have started to appear, including this Greater Yellowlegs loudly announcing its arrival.

Back in 2002 and with my first new 2 Mp digital camera in hand, I took a trip to Warrumbungle National Park, a comfortable 5 hours drive north west from Sydney. The national park is based on the geographical Warrumbungle Mountain Range, sometimes shortened to the Warrumbungles,
The Warrumbungles are the remnants of a large heavily eroded shield volcano which was active from 13 to 17 million years ago. The volcano is estimated to have been 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) high and 50 kilometres (31 mi) wide. It formed as volcanic explosions occurred over millions of years. The remaining complex rocky formations are what is left after millions of years of erosion.
In this shot you see The Breadknife, a 90m high narrow rock wall formed when magma was forced through a crack in the earth's surface and intruded vertically into volcanic tuff and breccia. It cooled and set into a hard, narrow mass with numerous contraction joints. Erosion has left a long sliver of stone exposed which is hundreds of metres long and only several metres wide.
To the right of The Breadknife is Bluff Pyramid, a lave dome formed when lava bubbled to the surface and clogged up the source vent. The plug formed below the surface and blocked the vent. The resustant plug is prominent now as adjacent softer materials have eroded away.
Stay with me forever
Stay in till it's dark
Stay in till the morning
Till we see the sun
Say you'll never leave me
Here's where you belong
Stay in till the morning
Stay a little while
Liz I can't wait to get you in my bed
Do you need me?, Do do do do do you need me baby.
It's been months since you've been here and say...
Did you mean it?, Did did did did did you mean it baby.
Now work with me a little while
Much of settling down but we hanging around
Started in a whole damn show, but we at the whole time low
Yeah it won't be a little while
Not in till late till we reconcile
Here are hearts exposed,
Not nobody takes the seats while the curtains close
(Do do do do do do do, do do do do do do)
Here are hearts exposed,
Not nobody takes the seats while the curtains close
(Do do do do do do do, do do do do do do)
Here are hearts exposed,
Not nobody takes the seats while the curtains close
Sway our hearts in motion
Swaying in all night
Swaying in slow motion
Until our hearts collide
I'm not good with emotion
But show me a little more fun
Just a little more devotion
That you willing to make it right
It's been months since you've been here and say...
The interior of the cathedral has a Latin cross plan, divided into a main nave and two side naves by arches of ancient columns: fourteen in pink granite and two in cipolin. The bases and capitals are from the 2nd century. The two large capitals supporting the triumphal arch of the nave were probably made by a workshop in Puglia, in the middle of the 12th century.
The roof of the nave has been lowered, as can be seen from the outside of the building. The transept is higher than the two naves. While some parts of the building are barrel vaulted and others have an exposed frame, the presbytery has a stone arch vault.
Beyond the transept, the church presents an unusual aspect, combining an essentially Romanesque style, with simple and massive forms, with pointed arches. This arrangement, also found in the cathedral of Monreale, seems to have its origin in the region of Cluny, in France. It is a precursor of the Gothic style, born around Paris a few years later.
The church has three apses, a layout also present in the Cathedral of Monreale. The two lateral apses are decorated on the outside by blind arches adorned with small ravens in horseshoe arches, also widely used in Monreale. The crows, produced in 1215-1223, depict the heads of animals and contorted human figures. The crows in the central apse are more recent. The central apse initially had three large eye windows, which were then closed to give space to the mosaics, and a larger central ogival window. Two other pairs of circular windows are located at the ends of the transept.
