My absolute favourite place to welcome the sun. It just so happens to be the most easterly point in North America as well so I’m also the first. Usually I’m there alone except for a random fox and an occasional early morning hiker. It’s always windy and always cold but the sound of the waves, the smell of the salt water, and that fresh cool air filling my lungs makes me feel alive. There isn’t another place on earth I’d rather be at that hour of the day. And just thinking about it now makes me crave another early morning lonesome adventure to welcome a new day.

This is the windows of the lighthouse in the previous photo I posted looking toward the newer, more traditional lighthouse. Both lighthouses are beautiful but I’m partial to the short one!

Happy window Wednesday all! Thank goodness we are already half way through the week!!

A winter sunrise over Cape Bonavista, NL

A highlight from this summer has to be this particular day fishing for cod off the north-east coast of Newfoundland and a few wonderful encounters with these spectacular Sperm Whales. The weather that day made it all the more magical.

This species of whale seemed to take a shallow first dive (as if to gain momentum) and immediately follow that with a more vertical dive when it would disappear into the depths using echolocation to seek out its favorite food in the pitch dark ocean depths, Giant Squid.

A brief encounter but always a pleasure to see. They were scarce today.

The SS Kyle Shipwrech in Harbour Grace, NL

I originally visited expect to photograph on a clear night during the blue hour. While I did stay well past sunset and snapped numerous photos, the sea mist and light drizzle arrived which worked fine also.

I did shrink the image to make it smaller but looking forward to getting this one on my wall!

These are my very first pair of skates (they still have my name scratched inside them). For that reason, this photo provides mixed emotions of how beautiful nature is, coupled with past losses of time, and loved ones. I waited for the better part of two hours for one of the many birds there to land on them. It somehow seems fitting that the bird that eventually landed on them was the Canada Jay (aka the Gray Jay) and, just like my old buckle skates, was full of character.

It is often difficult to find wildlife in my immediate area, not because it is not around, just because it's all forest and they hide well. I am looking forward to the annual migration of the Hodge's Hill Caribou herd.

I had a pleasant encounter with this mother fox on the same day I photographed the iceberg (my previous post). Her young ones were running around on the hillside below while she watched over them.

A misty morning in Deep Bay, located on Fogo Island, NL.

A scene in the narrows of St. John's Harbour. NL

After taking an extended absence from Flickr I realized I do not have a good online location to back up and catalogue my photos which is primarily why I like Flickr. So I am uploading a few of my memories and likes from this past year of life. Although I was born and raised a Nflder, this was from my very first visit to Fogo Island this past summer.

A low fog hangs over the warm water of Deadman's Pond near Gander, NL

A beautiful and peaceful winter evening after the frequent hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

One of several colorful photos from a foggy morning in October 2022.

Inspired by others (and you know who you are :) ) I decided to try a Sliders Sunday image myself. It is not the original image I had planned to use but while experimenting, I decided that this was one I would most likely hang on my wall so this is the one I chose to share.

This was originally editing in LR then transformed using a trial version of Topaz studio (still experimenting with Studio) and then final edit to touch up saturation and watermark in Corel Paintshop Pro.

I would like to find the water color effect I like but haven't found one yet if you have any suggestions :)

Happy Sliders Sunday!

A Cross Fox relaxing on a frosty morning. Despite it's apparent relaxed nature it is very alert to every sight and sound the surrounds it.

Rain.drizzle and fog is not unusual in December in Newfoundland particularly in shoreline areas.

A cold morning in January 2021 with not much snow on the ground . That came the following month. Meantime, the rocks were extremely slippery from the waves washing onshore coating them in a jacket of ice. This a long exposure taken at the mouth of the river (Anchor Brook) where it flows into the sea.

A foggy and windy December morning visiting this shipwreck in Newfoundland.

Cape Spear, Newfoundland's oldest surviving lighthouse, dated 1836. Current equipment was installed in 1912 and remains in use in the concrete tower built nearby in 1955. The lighthouse was constructed by local builders Nicholas Croke and William Parker.

900 foot cliffs on Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, Canada guard access to the traditional caribou migration route.

I wish I had more time on this particular night. I was anxious to photograph the milky way but 3 mins outside town I started to hit foggy patches. I almost turned back but continued out the highway sometimes crawling through the fog thinking this is a waste of time. But the scattered clear patches teased me to continue. When I finally reached my destination I manage to get off about 9 shots before I was in a thick blanket again. You can see the fog over the water and in the air. But I managed to get this one photo that I am mostly pleased with.

Central Newfoundland February 2023

I have heard several versions of the story behind these painted sheds in Ladle Cove, NL.

My best information suggests the gentleman who owned this one and several others passed away Jan 19/19. He seemed to be a wonderful character who enjoyed many things including photography,

It has been reported to me that his sister, an artist, started the task of painting these sheds bordering the ocean shoreline. Not all are finished.

Mr. Pinsent has now passed away. But the memory of him remains strong in this little community.

Since moving to Corner Brook in September i have had little time to explore the area. The short periods of time i do get to explore are always full of amazing landscapes and scenes. Here i am getting soaked by the mist from the waterfall. What an amazing place...

In the forest, my favorite colours.

I'm leaving the harbour

Tear drops to swallow

We stay on the water

Till your sonic reaches out for an aim

And I will cry

Out for the ocean

'Cause when the ships arrive I cannot

Hope for a mayday

So sad that the beauty of Autumn is so brief.

The nightlife in St. John's is the lights of the ships. Such a magic place with these beautiful ladies that illuminate the Harbour Drive for lonely strangers. So Nobody Gets Hurt here.

On June 24, 1497, the City of St. John's (NL) was founded. The oldest post-Columbian European settlement in North America.

I visited this place three times and wish I could come here more often.

Every time this city is so different, but no matter the weather - St. John's is always so beloved. Mother Earth performs here her best symphonies: Wind, Ocean, Seagulls - ideally sound with the Lighthouse sirens. The fresh Ocean aroma is the best spa for your lungs. I wish I could steal all the local air..

And, of course, the Newfies. So happy, friendly, open, hospitable, hearty people.

Once you are here, you will not want to leave.

Happy Birthday the Best City in the World! Please don't change, be yourself and Go Forward!

This place nearby the City of St.John's (Newfoundland and Labrador) is the most Eastern point of Canada and the North America.

One could stand on the top of the world, facing the wind, fog and Atlantic Ocean.

St.John's is the oldest city in Canada. Dated to 1497, it is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. Here in the harbor one may see huge Atlantic ships and small fishing schooners in the same time. By the way, time stops here, it seems that these waters still remember first explorers from Europe and the year of 1762, when the British and French fought in the Battle of Signal Hill.
