or: Why my photography has suffered of late.

It seems I've just taken a bit of a break for a spell. Instead of hiding behind the lens, I've been hiding in front of my workbench.

While waiting for glue to dry on a hiking stick I was wrapping with leather cord recently, I picked up a drop of cedar fence board from the shelf and began whittling away at it. I did finish sand the inside of the bowl, but the rest of it is simply whittled and burnished with a deer antler, both before, and after, applying Mineral Oil.

I have a small cordlock drawstring pouch coming to keep it clean while riding in my trail vest pocket. I sometimes like to steep a cup of herbal tea while on the trail - this will be my trail teaspoon from now on. Much more appropriate than plastic I think.

I really like the way the Mineral Oil has brought out the grain of the wood. But note, that is not dirt on it. That is where the oil has brought out other coloration of the wood as well. Wood is funny that way.

Now it's time to get back to cutting on hiking/walking sticks once more. I'll get may camera back out again soon.

I gotta admit I was pretty excited by the vibe, atmosphere (the lighting was perfect) and the contents therein. Which hopefully explains my less than Pro photography skills or lack there of.

making an detailed explanation to her companion in the Village of Gatlinburg

Long before Election Day, Hurricane Sandy, the presidential debates, Libya, the 47 percent, the conventions or even the Iowa Caucuses, candidates and their strategists toiled away behind the scenes, mapping a path to victory. For some, the long hours and hard work paid off. For others, the efforts came up short. We’ll kick off our series by convening the lead strategists and managers from the Obama and Romney camps, in a freewheeling panel discussion about what went right, what went wrong, and what we learned in the process.

This young woman was one of our tour guides. She's pointing to a sarcophagus on display in the museum. The sign beside it reads:

Starting in the second century CE, both Christian and pagan Romans buried their dead in a stone coffin called a sarcophagus. A sarcophagus was usually carved with decorations and images of the deceased. Often the back was left uncarved because the sarcophagus would be placed against the wall of a tomb. Though Christians borrowed pagan designs for their carcophagi, the designs were reinterpreted to symbolize new Christian concepts.

I'm kidding! Honestly I don't really know what's up with German People but this might be a little helpful if you are looking for some insight.
