WIELS premieres a major traveling retrospective of Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ oeuvre, including both rarely seen and more known artworks, while proposing an experimental form for the exhibition that is indebted to the artist’s own radical conception of the artwork.
Gonzalez-Torres (American, b. Cuba 1957-1996), one of the most influential artists of his generation, settled in New York in the early 1980s, where he studied art and began his practice as an artist before his untimely death of AIDS related complications. His work can be seen in critical relationship to Conceptual art and Minimalism, mixing political activism, emotional affect, and deep formal concerns in a wide range of media, including drawings, sculpture, and public billboards*, often using ordinary objects as a starting point—clocks, mirrors, light fixtures. Amongst his most famous artworks are his piles of candy and paper stacks from which viewers are allowed to take away a piece. They are premised, like so much of what he did, on instability and potential for change: artworks without an already preset or specific form. The result is a profoundly human body of work, intimate and vulnerable even as it destabilizes so many seemingly unshakable certainties (the artwork as fixed, the exhibition as a place to look but not touch, the author as the ultimate form-giver).
To present the oeuvre of an artist who put fragility, the passage of time, and the questioning of authority at the center of his artworks, the exhibition will be entirely re-installed at each of its venues halfway through its duration by a different invited artist whose practice has been informed by Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ work. A first version of Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Specific Objects without Specific Form by curator Elena Filipovic will open to the public and on March 5, 2010, the artist Danh Vo will re-install the exhibition, effectively making an entirely new show.

The 747-100 also was available as a short-range airplane, which had a modified body structure to accommodate a greater number of takeoffs and landings.

La Fondation Nicolas Hulot lance My Positive Impact
2015 est une année décisive pour le climat et donc pour l’humanité toute entière. La COP 21, Conférence internationale sur le climat, se réunira à Paris en décembre prochain. 195 pays, devront impérativement parvenir à un accord si nous voulons éviter des changements climatiques irréversibles et leurs conséquences dramatiques pour la vie sur notre planète et pour des millions d’habitants.
Pendant longtemps, le débat sur le climat a été agité par deux questions : est-ce vrai ? Et y-a-t-il des solutions ?
Aujourd’hui nous savons que c’est vrai. Les scientifiques sont unanimes pour l’affirmer. Maintenant le changement est-il inéluctable ? Non, si nous optons pour les bons choix, individuellement et collectivement.
Les solutions existent, elles naissent partout dans la société civile. Des associations, des entreprises, des collectivités inventent, créent, lancent des initiatives pertinentes, efficaces et réplicables, pour lutter contre le dérèglement climatique. Habitat, alimentation, transport, santé … tous les secteurs sont concernés. A la clé : des créations d’emplois, plus de lien social, une meilleure qualité de vie et moins d’émissions de gaz à effet de serre. Malheureusement ces projets restent trop souvent expérimentaux confrontés à un mur de conformisme ou de scepticisme. Il suffirait pourtant de presque rien pour faire de ces bonnes idées isolées les standards de demain. C’est pourquoi, la Fondation Nicolas Hulot pour la Nature et l’Homme a décidé de permettre à tous de choisir les idées à suivre et de donner le pouvoir aux solutions pour le climat en les sortant de l’anonymat, grâce à une campagne de mobilisation inédite : My Positive Impact.
Le principe : 100 initiatives portées par des petites entreprises, des collectivités et des associations, qui répondent aux problèmes du changement climatique sont soumises au vote du public. Pour plus de lisibilité, deux sessions de votes sont proposées à raison de :
• 50 solutions soumises au vote du 11 mars au 19 avril
• 50 solutions soumises au vote du 25 mai au 5 juillet
Chacun est invité à voter pour celles qui lui parle ou qui le convainque le plus et, avec ses partenaires médias, la Fondation transformera les votes en visibilité ! 10 solutions remporteront ainsi une véritable campagne de communication en mesure de leur apporter la crédibilité et la notoriété nécessaire pour attirer investisseurs, compétences, partenaires, débouchés…. Reportages, plateaux TV, chroniques radios, articles, annonces presse, bannières web… les récompenses médiatiques prendront diverses formes.
Soutenue par de nombreuses personnalités (chanteurs, acteurs, sportifs, chefs d’entreprise, …), la campagne trouvera son point d’orgue en décembre 2015 à l’occasion de la COP 21, lors d’une grande soirée de remise de trophées My Positive Impact aux lauréats.
Participer à la campagne My Positive Impact permet non seulement aux solutions pour le climat d’être vues, partagées, déployées à très large échelle, mais aussi de créer les conditions pour faire émerger un nouveau modèle de société, où les bonnes idées de quelques-uns deviennent la chance de tous.

FACET researchers work on a laser table in the room where the laser is housed that creates plasma for FACET experiments.
FACET is a unique R&D facility for experimental electron beam physics using the SLAC linear accelerator. FACET's beams provide important science opportunities in many fields, with particular focus on plasma wakefield acceleration, a technique in which electrons gain energy by essentially surfing on the wakes of other electrons within an ionized gas. If successful, plasma wakefield acceleration could power a new generation of shorter, more economical particle accelerators.

The XV-15 was somewhat of a crowd pleaser, at last as long as I was playing around with the Circuit Cubes app, that controls its motors! A lot of people mistook it for an Osprey, though.
This is an experimental set-up with a Leupold intermediate eye relief scope on a mount from Scout Scopes that replaces the factory rear sight. Once I zeroed the scope, it worked very well against juice bottles at 150 yards.
In the past, I have tried various methods for mounting a traditional scope above and behind the ejection/loading port. All of them interfere with loading to some degree, and so the scout scope seems like a better optics solution for the SKS.
I only ever customize Chinese SKSes.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife, along with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, experimentally released captively produced Delta smelt into the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta on Dec. 14-15, 2021. This project will help inform future supplementation of the species in the wild. Though it was once plentiful in the Delta ecosystem, this threatened fish species is now a rare sight. Recent studies led by DWR have bolstered confidence that Delta smelt born and raised in hatcheries can acclimate to wild conditions and support recovery of the species. Video by Brandon Honig/USFWS

Lately I've been experimenting with my new Sigma 70-300 telephoto+macro lens. This is the first time I'm using such kind of lens so it's pretty exciting.
Since I'm completely focused on learning the technical aspects of the lens, compositions, colors have not been a priority (so the photographs might actually suck!). Once you know your tools better... it helps you do the job more efficiently :-)
In the above shot I was testing the macro mode of the lens and the DOF as well. I have always wanted to take a photo where the background is completely blurred. This lens makes it possible. The experiments continue...
Actually they are regular mallard ducks （真鴨／マガモ） and there is little experimental about them. I think. I don’t know what secrets they are keeping. At any rate, “experimental” refers more to the processing for this photo, but more on that later.
I came across these guys while exploring a part of the Oto River I don’t normally follow. It was early afternoon, so maybe they had just eaten and were relaxing in the sun for a few hours while the meal (whatever ducks eat) digested. Siesta time, basically.
I didn’t have my long lens with me, so I couldn’t get a better shot. I did try to move closer, but they started making some angry noises that made me rethink the idea. I don’t think ducks bite (or pinch and twist, anyways) like geese do, but then again, I thought it probably best to respect their warning.
I cropped the photo pretty wide. As I’ve mentioned before, I like experimenting with different “widescreen” ratios. This is at 1.85, slightly wider than 16:9, which I’m sure most of you are familiar with. It is the standard for 35mm films. I think it makes what might otherwise be a boring shot a little more interesting. I also gave the colors a hint of cross processing.
The real experiment for me is I added a small inline frame and faded the colors outside that frame. I know this is a common enough technique, but I’ve never tried it before. I liked it at first, but the more I look at it, the more unsure I am. I thought to reprocess it without, but then again, a daily photoblog should include lots of experimentation, so I decided to post it as is.

First of a few trial shots from my new Arduino based water droplet trigger.
I'll post a setup shot and perhaps a circuit diagram of some sorts in the future. It's basically a solenoid triggered using the Arduino to open and close for 3 separately defined times (to create 2 drops) and then trigger the camera (which has a remote flash attached), in the hope to capture the second drop hitting the bounce back of the first drop hitting the water.
It's certainly easier to control than my previous attempts to photograph water droplets. It's also much easier to set up thanks to Openbuild V-Slots to build a stable frame.
More shots to come as I experiment with different timings, liquids, receptacles and lighting.
