I had half expected a wintery wonderland in Yosemite - similar to this.
I had expected a smooth snowy white carpet draping the entire valley.
I had envisioned pine trees sagging under the weight of fresh snow on its leaves.
I had assumed that the snowy fog would meld over the meadows.
I had hoped for frozen rivers and waterfalls and still reflections in the valley.
And for being the end of February, these were not hard to ask for. Suprisingly, Mother Nature dealt a wild card that weekend - it had pushed the snowline to about 5000ft and was snickering at me from behind the cover of the fog.
There was nary a snowfall in the valley, just a cold and bitter rain.
Still, the low-hanging clouds in the valley provided some neat lighting situations when the sun poked its nose into the valley, albeit only for a brief period of time that cold Saturday.

It's hard not to imagine them feeling something like joy when they do this, pretty joyous to watch anyway. This youngster is still hanging around where it was born, strangely it's father ( presumably ) hasn't been agressive towards it as far as I've seen, very un-swan-like behaviour especially considering they must have imminent new arrivals. I'm pretty sure it can't fly, does it's right hand wing look damaged ? I know they're perfectly capable of surviving without being able to fly, I just worry how long dad's patience is gonna last, especially once the cygnets hatch. In previous years he's not been known for his patience............

Family : Myrtaceae
While purchasing rainforest plants today 2/11/2020 at Taree Council Nursery my attention was drawn to a planted mature Rhodamnia rubescens, a critically endangered shrub, growing in the nursery.
I was surprised to see it with fruit developing.
Myrtle Rust, as expected, was active on the fruit and also on the leaves but the plant was surviving nevertheless.
The plant had really suffered in the 2019 drought but had come back in the spring of 2020.
Not far from this plant another surprise was in store - another critically endangered species, a juvenile Rhodomyrtus psidioides with developing flower buds.
The plant was about 2 metres tall and looked relatively free of Myrtle Rust.
On my own property at Diamond Beach both these species were once common.
Except for a small population of 15 very healthy Rhodamnia rubescens plants all the hundreds of plants of both species that once existed have progressively died since Myrtle Rust hit in the spring of 2011.
This spring, 2020, however I've noted a number of what appear to be root suckers of both species popping up in a few places where no other plants of either species are surviving.
I am monitoring their growth however based on past experience they will grow to about 20-30 cm by which time Myrtle Rust will set them back, if not completely kill them.
Early in 2020 a myrtle rust scientist visited the property and examined the 15 healthy Rhodamnia rubescens plants. Cuttings and genetic material were taken and sent to Mount Annan Botanic Gardens for cultivation and DNA analysis to try to establish if the 15 plants are suckers off one, or a number of plants, or if they are all individual plants exhibiting apparent resistance to Myrtle Rust.
While its unlikely the healthy Rhodamnia rubescens are resistant to Myrtle Rust, if in fact they are proven to be so, or at least partially so, then these plants could offer some optimism for the survival of this critically endangered species.

Congratulations to Agnes and Omar on the birth of their new bundle of joy "Camila" born March 6th, 2011. Camila was born at 6:10pm weighing 6lbs 3oz and 19 1/4 inches long.
We have one girl (as you've probably figured by my flickr pool) and now we're expecting # 2!! I love this fabric combo for the nursery! DH is the decision maker/co-designer. He has the final say on this one. He wants vehicles that look hand drawn/cartoonish. Nothing TOO bold or colorful. This combo fits perfect!
Flak towers.
As after the landing of the Allies in Italy south and north of Rome (1943) attacks of Allied air fleets were to be expected on Vienna, it was decided, 1943/1944 (according to Berlin model prototype August 11, 1942, arrangement for the construction of two flak towers in Vienna on September 9, 1942, proposals for locations and construction sequence by Armaments Minister Albert Speer on 7/8 November 1942]) at different locations in the freest possible situation to build concrete towers on which anti-aircraft guns (Flak) were set up; the towers should allow this clear field of action with better visibility. The construction was carried out by architect Friedrich Tamms (1904-1980). The towers have different floor plans (Monastery barracks and one of the two in the Augarten 16-square, Arenbergpark rectangular). A distinction was made between control towers and turrets (each group consisted of one of these towers).
Three such flak tower groups were built:
2, Augarten (two towers)
3, Arenbergpark (two towers)
6, Esterházypark, and 7, courtyard of the Monastery barracks (together two towers).
For the 1942-1944 built according to plans of Friedrich Tamms flak towers were mainly used prisoners of war, which were contracted in specially built labor camps. Already during the war one thought about a later (national socialist) use of the monoliths, whereby the suggestions extended from the marble-clad memorial to the sheathing of residential buildings.
When the flak towers had become militarily useless after the Second World War, there was a civilian use in some areas (House of the Sea in Esterházypark, government bunker, museum depot), but also began a decade-long, still open discussion on a general solution, value also being attached on an external transformation.
Similar flak towers existed in Berlin and Hamburg, but they were partly blown up there, some of them heavily altered. In March 2003, the MA 18 (urban development) and the Kronen-Zeitung (newspaper) in a joint action called on the population to submit proposals for the transformation of the flak towers. A specialist jury selected from the approximately 500 submissions projects that were presented in June/July 2003 by the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna in an exhibition.

Als die Flaktürme nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg militärisch nutzlos geworden waren, kam es in einigen Teilbereichen zu einer zivilen Nutzung (Haus des Meeres im Esterházypark, Regierungsbunker, Museumsdepot), doch begann auch eine jahrzehntelange, bis heute offene Diskussion über eine generelle Lösung, wobei auch Wert auf eine äußere Umgestaltung gelegt wurde.
Ähnliche Flaktürme gab es in Berlin und Hamburg, doch wurden sie dort teils gesprengt, teils stark verändert. Im März 2003 forderten die MA 18 (Stadtentwicklung) und die Kronen-Zeitung in einer gemeinsamen Aktion die Bevölkerung auf, Vorschläge zur Umgestaltung der Flaktürme einzureichen. Eine Fachjury wählte aus den etwa 500 Einsendungen Projekte aus, die im Juni/Juli 2003 vom Historischen Museum der Stadt Wien in einer Ausstellung präsentiert wurden.

This is a photograph from the BHAA K-Club 10KM Road Race and Fun Run 2014 was held at the K-Club Golf and Hotel Resort, Straffan, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday 12th of April 2013 at 11:00. The race, an annual event, has become famous for it's very fast and flat course which starts and finishes within the grounds of the K-Club. While the weather was dry there was a tough breeze in places which made running conditions a little harder than expected. The road race has gained fame through it's PB potential but the spread of refreshments and catering afterwards are now legendary and are of the highest standard imaginable. Race director Gerry Byrne and a very large team of volunteers, K-Club staff, and local Gardai must be given the highest of compliments for the staging of the event. Well done everyone.

With stiff competition from a number of Parkruns and other races in the North Leinster area the K-Club 10KM stood out for it's flawless organisation, large field, and epic spread of refreshments afterwards.
Who are the BHAA? The BHAA (Business Houses Athletic Association) is a work place athletic organisation who's aim is to facilitate colleagues to run together in a series of races. They organise a series of properly managed cross country, trail and road races over the year. To learn more about membership, fixtures, etc you can visit their website bhaa.ie/. You do not need to be a member of a company or BHAA organisation to take part in any of their races.

Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

(Not As You Would Expect) Fairy Tales on the Fourth Plinth (One and Other) performance art in Trafalgar Square, London.
Once upon a time, there was a little princess, who sat upon a big stone plinth in the square and told deliciously dark fairy tales, just because everybody likes storytime
in the afternoon. She took her dearest companion, Mr Teddy, with his very best black satin bow, and wore her favourite green taffeta party dress, and had a nice cup
of tea and some ginger beer.

An extra bonus. I initially expected that the 2 birds found very close to the location of the pair seen the day before would be the same pair but NO. They were immature youngsters so the breeding pair have been productive. A first for me to see this age.

Yeah, finally posting something and the reason is that I have received my expected print from my flickr friend Hydrophobic Heffalump and an Unexpected post card from my friend Baek from Korea!
Yes, I am very happy with both presents!
And yes, I will try to start again to post photos... and also, a new little project will start!

Always expect the unexpected when it comes to distribution of basic Hot Wheels especially here in the U.K. One branch of a certain retailer may have cases dating back 12 months or more and another just a few miles away are as up to date as anywhere! I certainly wasn't expecting to see 2018 Batch C so quickly but one ASDA store came up good and now i'm the proud owner of two of these newly recoloured Datsun Fairlady 2000 models. A wonderful little casting of the original 60's Fairlady 2000 and a brief and unhindered warning at the time of what the Japanese were capable of perfectly miniaturised here even if its colour and licensed Fifteen52 logo seems a bit too modern for its era. Mint and boxed.
My 2nd maternity shoot. Tried a few without the backdrop this time as the colours looked pretty good. Also, there wasn't loads of room to set up the backdrop due to the shape of the room.
For the shots without the backdrop I used both my Sony F42 flashguns with white shoot-through umbrellas.
For the backdrop shots I had a bare flash behind the backdrop and one camera right with a reflector on the floor aiming back up into Matt & Kiley.
