smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system. Also dieting on New Year's Day isn't a good idea as you can't eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover. I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second :-)

Hamningberg is the most northeasternmost village of the Varangerfjord and also the end of the road, which starts at the base of the fjord in Varangerbotn. In former times it was a fishing village, but nowadays Hamningberg has no permanent residents. The village itself is very nice, but the scenic moonscape road to Hamningberg itself is a main attraction in Varanger for many visitors. On a good day in May you can expect to see White-billed Divers, Pomarine Skuas, Long-tailed Skuas, Northern Fulmars and Northern Gannets. During summer, the area holds breeding Red-throated Pipit, Snow Buntings, etc. The overgrown bushes in the abandoned gardens attract breeding Fieldfare and Redwing. Hamningberg can feel like the end of the world, and its position means many disoriented birds can end up here. Hamningberg has a great rarity record list. While driving from Vardø to Hamningberg, you are pass two villages: Persfjord and Sandfjord. (www.varanger.net)

What already seems ages ago, my trip to Cabo Verde, I still think I have a few nice images to share. This is one of them.
This image was taken when I walked through the valley of the Ribeira Grande area. It shows the steep mountains, the rough landscape, and what was something I had expected more (but didn't see anymore) rather lush/green vegetation. In this part of Sao Antao, there was still a lot of water left from the rainy season, while else it already had dried up considerably.
The best period to visit Sao Antao is therefor probably short after the rainy season, November?!
This wasn't what I expected to see at before 6am in the morning. I wouldn't have believed this had I not witnessed it with my own eyes. It took a while for my brain to register what was happening and then a bit longer to get the camera set up for the fact this took place under a dark bush. I could see this Rufous-collared Sparrow wrestling with something large but initially I couldn't make out what. Then I realised it was some sort of Hawk Moth. Having plucked the Moth from the plant the Sparrow kept jumpiing forward and pecking viciously at the moth and then retreating and then repeating the exercise. Then it took the moth and hit it against the floor several times clearly trying to finish it off. It did eventually kill it, then rolled it up a bit and consumed it little by little. I was still in shock when I went to breakfast.
Expect to have hope rekindled. Expect your prayers to be answered in wondrous ways. The dry seasons in life do not last. The spring rains will come again.

I expected to be just photographing this rose but the unexpected happened. This insect flew into view and stayed for just a few seconds. I think the insect might be a wasp but I'm not sure.

I saw her fly into the tree and then I saw the nest. She had brought spiderwebs in to add to the nest, and then she sat in it for a short time before taking off again. I don't know if she already has eggs, or if the nest building is in process. It looks complete to me, lol! : )
Sunday, January 24th and our first snow of the year. I woke up, pulled the curtains open expecting a winter wonderland as heavy snow had been forecast, only to find not so much as a single snowflake had landed overnight. Back to bed (yes!) with no guilt for not getting out of my nest. An hour later I pulled the curtain open again and I couldn't see 50 feet, the snow was coming down that thick. A couple of hours later I had to take my son to work so I threw the camera in the car as this little woodland is on the route to his workplace and it was still snowing. After dropping him off at work I came back and parked up, walked into the woods, camera in hand. Just about then it stopped snowing altogether and 5 minutes later it started to rain. ☔ 😮 I was after the classic woodland shot with fat snowflakes drifting down through the frame. Not to be. I got this though which did have a wintry look to it, even if an hour later a lot of the white stuff would be gone.
Today all by chance and while looking for something else I found an old selfie, taken early in the morning on the Christmas Day of 2013, at the pier of Katerini's Coast in Greece.
I did not even remember having shot this one but I noticed that it had potential, so with a bit of processing it came out better than expected and here I am!

After posting shots of most of the other kinds of peeps, I figured that a shot of this particular species would be a reasonable expectation.
Anything else would be 'non sequitur' to say the least.
Least Sandpiper
This is a photo I took last week when I spend an hour in a local park early in the morning. The flowers looked lovely despite the heat but they water them every morning and evening. You'd expect lots of insects among all these flowers but I only saw a few bees and sadly not a single butterfly.

A rare Sunday run of Ohio Central's empty Conesville to Burr Oak coal train made a late evening appearance on the former W&LE main in Dresden, Ohio, on Jan. 6, 2019. These coaltrains are expected to stop running later this year as the AEP Conesville powerplant will close by May 2020. Loading at Burr Oak, south of New Lexington, Ohio, this is the only traffic that currently runs on the former W&LE from Trinway to Zanesville, so this portion of the line will likely be mothballed.
Back in the deep dark woods one might expect to be surrounded by any number of things. Trees, plants, animals, even the odd stream, what you might not expect is to find a world within the world. This photo is an interesting example of a micro eco system pressed into a crevice of the mountains, often overlooked, often ignored. The truth of this photo is that…. It’s only, at most, two feet tall. Not the main body, from the top of the photo to the pond. A little curiosity, streaming water along the path, so small you may blink and miss it walking by, hidden by the larger world around it. Take a moment to be amazed at this Babbling Brook deep into the Great Smokey Mountains, somewhere on the North Carolina Tennessee line.

As expected, the plum trees did not bear a large crop this year; the harvest was only about one-third of last year's.
In a typical year, I would have had to climb a tall ladder and spend a long time picking the fruit. This year, however, I was able to harvest the plums simply by gathering the fully ripe ones that fell naturally to the ground.
The plums shown in the uploaded image are yellow fruits captured just before they dropped from the tree. 🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏
We expected to find a Peregrine Falcon in this particular tree, but when we got there, we found this Merlin, instead.

Out for sunrise yesterday morning, I was expecting a bit of mist along the River Adur here but sadly there was none.
So a quick change to plan B, With time ticking by I shot to Titch hill overlooking Steyning and Bramber , I knew I could get an elevated view across the Adur valley from there for sunrise and hopefully some cloud, yes It was all I hoped for, mist in the valley cloud and a nice sunrise , the first shot i`ll be editing later so you will have to wait until tomorrow lol

Gorgeous Sunrise over Mont Saint Michel, Normandy, France
Well, I don't mind admitting that I was not expecting any sort of colour in the sky over Saint Michel when I visited one morning last week, partly because the sun rises over my right shoulder but alas, having arrived to find nobody in-situ, I quickly set up and waited.
The clouds started rolling by as the sun rose and within half an hour or so, the colour started to build. I was absolutely delighted I can tell you and even more so because this interesting and photogenic stretch of land before me while it looks like a tidal river, is in fact rain water that has filled this wonderful shallow gully.
It had rained quite a lot recently according to the locals and this provided me with a fantastic opportunity to capture water that makes an amazing lead in line. I was certainly blessed this morning for sure and with grey skies predicted for the rest of the week (which turned out to be partly true), it might have been great timing.

By the look of his mud-tipped bill, I'd say this ruddy duck hit bottom. I guess that's to be expected. From what I read they dive to the bottom of a pond and filter mud through some plates in their bill to get at aquatic invertebrates, plant matter and the like. Not sure I fully grasp the physical mechanism for this filtering process. Back to this guy. He'll need to clean that mud off - that ridiculously blue bill is there to attract the ladies during the breeding season (which is now)

Horsey Windpump, Norfolk
Have to say when I set off from my B&B and got here I wasn't expecting that sort of sky!
Horsey Windpump is a windpump or drainage windmill in the care of the National Trust in the village of Horsey, on The Broads near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. The structure is a grade II* listed building.
In 1797 Horsey was a wild and desolate place, known locally as the Devil’s Country due to its wild and lawless nature. The Enclosures Act paved the way for the land to be drained and changed the area forever.
The name Horsey means ‘Horse Island’ and it is believed that Horsey was originally a stud or grazing area for horses. Mortality was high, with insects carrying fen plague, also known as marsh malaria. With only seven cottages and a small farmhouse, Horsey was not somewhere people wanted to live.
At this time, it was effectively still an island, surrounded by marshes with just one road in and out of the village that was often flooded for most of the year.
Enclosure and drainage in the 18th century led to a loss of animals and plants, many of which are now rare. It also meant the end of a way of life for the local people who lived here and made their living from the marshes.
Farming became easier and livestock was introduced but the sea was always a threat. When exceptionally high tides and storms coincided, the sea would break through the narrow strip of dunes, causing severe flooding, most recently in 1938.
Only in the 19th century did the sea defences and land drainage become sufficiently effective to allow for the construction of roads to neighbouring villages. But with climate change causing more frequent storms and sea level rises, the risk of flooding in this low-lying area remains high.
The present structure is the 3rd or 4th and was built in 1912 on the foundations of the 18th-century Horsey Black Mill.
The windpump was working until it was struck by lightning in 1943. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1948 from the Buxton Family and has been restored. The mill's damaged sails were removed in 1956 and replacement sails and fantail were installed in 1962. The Great Storm of 1987 (Otherwise known as the Michael Fish non-hurricane to us in Britain of a certain age) caused further damage, and repair works were required before the building could reopen to visitors in 1990.
The sails were removed again in 2014 and in 2016 a restoration project started ito repair and reinstate the cap and sails, with the ambition of restoring the Windpump to full working order. Finally, the sails eventually turned on the evening of Wednesday 29 May 2019 for the first time since 1943. This restoration work was awarded 'Building Conservation Project of the Year 2019' at The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) regional awards

I've been thinking a lot about these stats recently and what I can do to raise awareness and give back - especially considering today is Earth Day.
