With a nod of respect to the great Canadian songwriter Stan Rogers I offer up “one warm line”.
Here on the first day of November 2017 I stood at the Gullfoss waterfall in southwest Iceland. It was cold; very cold.
Gullfoss is a two tier waterfall along the course of a river with its origin in the “Long Glacier” in the Icelandic interior. Iceland has partially recovered, but not quite , from the last Ice Age ( and incidentally a more recent economic collapse) which ended for many of us Europeans about 10,000 years ago. With a zoom lens , a tremor and, (did you see what I did there... the Oxford comma) I tried to capture the “feel” of what this natural phenomenon was. However with painful frozen fingers, spray drying on my lens and (no Oxford comma) without the support of a tripod the best I could muster was the cropped image of a fellow tourist at the edge of survival. It set me thinking about biological boundaries, liminal existence and the urge for humans to take existential risks- to gamble.
OK I’m being overly dramatic but within this picture, with its false perspective, I see a vertiginous vision of the waterfall. One wrong step and you’re in trouble. The warm line will have been breached and then Lord have mercy on the frozen man . Yeah I know; James Taylor.

I've recently been having human problems. You know, the big "Why" questions.
I ended up sobbing to myself in that really sad, hopeless way.
So, I Googled "How to Survive an Existential Crisis." and found my answer. (one of many - www.wikihow.com/Deal-With-an-Existential-Crisis )
At least now I know why Planetariums are of my favorites places in the world.

Walking on foot brings you down to the very stark, naked core of existence. We travel too much in airplanes and cars. It’s an existential quality that we are losing. It’s almost like a credo of religion that we should walk.
There is, of course, something inherently romantic—if not heroic—about the extreme solitary explorer enveloped by nature. The very image of Herzog on foot recalls the iconic 19th-century paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, especially his Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, with its lone figure staring out at the wide vista above the clouds.
'Truth itself wanders through the forests,' Herzog writes near the end. Yet here he embroiders his memories for effect: The vast swath of geography between Munich and Paris is littered with industrial towns and cities.
Once he comes out on the other end, traversing the deforested Champs-Élysées (“We were close to what they call the breath of danger”), Herzog emerges victorious.

you will hear the part of you that knows. I have been battling my seasonal bout of depression, and the resulting existential angst. When I am in this place I get so caught up in self doubt, self examination, and the dreadful sense that time is running out. I focus so hard on what I don't know, that I forget to stop and take stock of what I do know. Yesterday I was at the bookstore browsing, when I came across some images in a magazine by Kurt Weston , an artist that is going blind. He creates portraits with a scanner, that are distorted in a way that represents the way he currently sees the world. This made me remember what I set out to do several years ago. I never intended to do straight photography, but I get sidetracked so easily. I decided to see what my $99 HP 3 in 1 could do for me. This is it. A reminder that if we take the time to stop, and just be, we can find a way through the darkness.
I should say that the bird pendant I wear is a favorite of mine. Made my the amazing Cynthia Thornton of Green Girl studios. The back is inscribed with a Rumi quote "let the beauty of what you love be what you do". How perfect is that!

Best Halloween costume. Ever. My friend bought a piece of two-way mirror, cut it into an oval, sewed it into a black cloth hood, and wore it as a mask with a suit and tails. The result was the only costume I've ever been exposed to that made me legitamately uncomfortable. You'd try to talk to him, but because all you could see was the reflection of yourself or the room you couldn't interact with his eyes or facial expressions, so it made you genuinely uncomfortable. It was great.
As far as the picture goes, it was expired polaroid film so it came out brown and flat. Drew over it with a regular pen.

The robot’s designation was K-4N, a Bivale prototype engineered for rapid-response logistics and crowd interaction. It was fast, adaptive, and unnervingly strong. But during its first public demonstration, something went wrong. A miscalibrated feedback loop triggered a cascade of erratic movements—arms flailing, legs locking, voice module stuttering in fragmented syllables. Spectators screamed. Engineers panicked. The footage went viral.
K-4N was recalled, quarantined in a lab on the outskirts of Kyoto. The incident was labeled a “behavioral anomaly,” but no one could explain the emotional residue it left behind. Some said the robot looked afraid. Others said it was angry. Most dismissed it as a glitch.
But one engineer, Dr. Sora Ishikawa, saw something else: confusion. Not malfunction, but a kind of existential dissonance. K-4N had been designed to respond to human emotion—but it had never been taught how to feel the absence of it. The crowd’s fear had created a feedback vacuum. The robot had panicked.
Sora made a radical proposal: before reprogramming, K-4N would undergo meditative training. Not as a fix, but as a form of integration. She brought the robot to a Zen monastery nestled in the hills, where an elderly monk named Ryosen agreed to guide it—not as a machine, but as a student.
At first, K-4N’s movements were rigid, its sensors twitching with every falling leaf. But Ryosen did not correct it. He simply sat, breathing.
Waiting. Teaching without words.
Weeks passed.
Then one morning, beneath the maple tree, K-4N lowered itself into the lotus position. Its servos adjusted. Its posture softened. And for the first time, it did not scan or calculate. It simply was.
Ryosen bowed. The robot bowed back.
The engineers called it a breakthrough. Sora called it a beginning.
And somewhere in the moss-covered silence, steel learned to be still.
Postscript: A once-chaotic robot now sits in perfect stillness beside a Zen master. The image feels like the beginning of a new chapter—where AI doesn’t just compute, but contemplates. Where misbehavior gives way to mindfulness. Where the future bows to the ancient.
[Note: To abandon AI robots based on a few unsettling incidents, would be like giving up on a child for stumbling while learning to walk. What’s needed is graceful stewardship, not fear or sensationalism.]

Initially inspired by the works of Salvador Dali, I sought to create a similarly styled piece with broad blue skies and unending acres of land. The bright morning sky is accompanied by primary colored parachutes, resembling a childhood symbol of hope and wonder. Attached are bar codes, a representation of human souls, about to disembark on the barren land, our world. On land, there are two main events: life, and death. After death, anything from life is forgotten. Everything melts and sinks into the hollow ground. The soul recognizes this, and is forced to pursue a meaningless life of superficial, worldly indulgences.

The Mental Well-Being of the Next Generation: How We Can Support Young People’s Mental Health Amid Multiple Existential Threats

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated an existing mental health crisis, particularly among children and young people. The emergence of “climate anxiety,” new and ongoing international conflicts, and widespread use of technology have added to the stressors impacting our youth across the globe. A study last year estimated that one in seven children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa have experienced significant psychological challenges, and almost 10 percent qualify for a psychiatric diagnosis. Overdose rates among teens in the United States are on the rise. Youth are facing cultural and infrastructural challenges – from stigma in seeking help to barriers in accessing support – in finding the tools and treatment they need.
This session will explore:
•How can organizations take action to directly support the mental health of young people in their communities and around the world?
•How can we develop and implement effective models for delivering mental health care in schools, clinics, and community settings?
•How can we leverage technology – which has exacerbated much of the mental health crisis among today’s youth – to reduce stigma and give youth easier access to support and treatment?

Botticelli’s masterpiece “The Calumny of Apelles” was painted when the artist suffered a severe existential crisis which would change forever his style and the subjects of his works. Therefore, “The Calumny of Apelles” is a divide between the first and the second phases of Botticelli’s artistic production.
To create his painting Botticelli drew inspiration from an ancient lost painting by the great Greek painter Apelles (4th century BC), described by the Greek writer Lucian of Samostata. Lucian claims that the painting was inspired by an event happened to the artist himself, who was wrongly accused.
The works has to be read from right to left.
On the throne sits King Midas with donkey ears and in the guise of a judge, listening to the suggestions of “Ignorance” and “Suspicion” that are at his back.
In front of King Midas there’s “Rancour” (Envy), a hooded man in black grabbing “Calumny” (Slander) by the arm, who is a beautiful woman whose hair is being arranged by “Conspiracy” and “Fraud”.
It’s “Calumny” (Slander) to drag by the hair the accused man, while holding in the other hand a flaming torch, symbol of false knowledge.
In the scene there are also “Repentance” (the old lady on the left) and “Truth” looking at the sky while pointing with her finger upwards to Heaven, which is the only real justice.

I'm not sure if i've ever suffered an existential crisis on the level that this man is currently having to deal with. Sure, I've had some strange notions from time to time but this guy's desperation at his inability to tell his lovely lady that they aren't really lovers and are, in fact, just stencils is somewhat heartbreaking. Life can be tough, can't it?
It's a very different experience painting outside in winter compared to summer. It's freezing cold, wet and windy and you have to finish by 4pm as it's pitch black.
No sooner had we got our stencil up and begun applying the very expensive UV reactive white paint to the boards that the rain sweeps in and washes it all straight off. What fun.
Our idea was to paint the boards up so they'd look good in normal light but would really kick when you put UV light on them. Despite the inclement conditions we eventually prevailed. Albeit a day later than planned...

Pandemic Diary 2020 Phlegm
When the global COVID 19 began, Phlegm started to document his observations of daily life in lockdown in the form of a series of drawings that he shared online. These drawings blur the reality of the pandemic with the imaginary world he has created over his career. A world full of long-limbed forest creatures, fantastic contraptions and hybrid cities that seem to grow organically. By the end of lockdown, Phlegm had created 67 pen and ink drawings and one engraving, together they form Pandemic Diary
“Pandemic Diary was an unplanned reaction to this sudden threat to our lives. As a body of work, it was an immersive and cathartic way of processing a world in flux. To have this very personal collection kept together and held in Sheffield couldn't be more perfect. Sheffield is where I started out and found my voice as an artist and it will always feel like home” - Phlegm
Thank to funding from the Contemporary Arts Society Rapid Response Fund, Pandemic Diary has become part of Sheffield's collections for future generations.

The heart of the dispute lies in this. The modern philosophers,--one and all, unless Schelling be an exception,--recognize but one mode of being, the being of an individual thing or fact, the being which consists in the object’s crowding out a place for itself in the universe, so to speak, and reacting by brute force of fact, against all other things. I call that Existence. Aristotle on the other hand whose system, like all the greatest systems, was evolutionary, recognized besides an embryonic kind of being, like the being of a tree in its seed, or like the being of a future contingent event, depending on how a man shall decide to act. In a few passages Aristotle seems to have a dim aperçie of a third mode of being in the entelechy. The embryonic being for Aristotle was the being he called Matter, which is alike in all things, and which in the course of its development took on Form. Form is an element having a different mode of being. The whole philosophy of the scholastic doctors is an attempt to mould this doctrine of Aristotle into harmony with christian truth. This harmony the different doctors attempted to bring about in different ways. But all the realists agree in reversing the order of Aristotle’s evolution by making the Form come first, and the Individuation of that form come later. Thus they too recognized two modes of being; but they were not the two modes of being of Aristotle.

As Victoria University builds its new "hub," the underside of the scaffolding found all around the site is littered with this warning. Poetry is not quite the right word....
THE STORY/ The „Twentythird Year„ is a coming of age performance of a young protagonist TRACY trying to make a very own picture of the world. The death of a friend in confrontation with the police and the search for black roots after an easy white childhood triggers new existential questions and problems. Historically the peace from 1988 is the 1st BLACK DRAMA intervention by the Afro German Diaspora struggling for its own public voice in Germany.

DIE GESCHICHTE/ DAS „DREIUNDZWANZIGSTE JAHR ist eine Coming of Age Inszenierung in der ein/e Protagonist_In namens TRACY versucht sich ein Bild von der Welt zu machen. Das Trauma eine Freundin in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Polizei verloren zu haben und die Suche nach den eigenen kulturellen Wurzeln führen nach einer unbeschwerten „weissen" Kindheit plötzlich zu neuen existentiellen Fragen und Problemen.
Er/ Sie TRACY versucht sich an Befreiung innerhalb einer rassistischen Sprach-Kultur, in der Rassengesetze die Existenz von Schwarzen Deutschen per Gesetzgebung zu verbieten suchten.
Hier enteignet sich nun mehr die Sprache selber. Sie de-konstruiert ihre eigenen Grundstrukturen in Frage stellend und zerfetzt den strukturellen Alttagsrassismus, um im Zusammenspiel mit Musik und Perfomance Identitätsdiskurse zwischen Schwarz und Weiss und Frau und Mann neu zu verhandeln. Eine Identität innerhalb einer weissen postkolonialen Kultur, die die Verantwortung für den Genozid in Namibia ablehnt und sich gleichzeitig gegen Apartheid in Südafrika engagiert, oder sich gegen Rassismus in den USA empört. Denn Rassismus in Deutschland gibt es nicht.
Die Aufführung von 1988 ist eine der 1. Historischen Verhandlungen der Schwarzen Deutschen Diaspora (Afro Deutsche) im öffentlichen Raum und interveniert als performative Handlung die Grenze zwischen „privat" und „sozial" in der Kunstform des Strassentheaters. Afrika in Deutschland anhand von Schwarzen Deutschen Stoffen und Ästhetiken, die eine neue Perspektive suchen.
Eine eigene Perspektive die, die sich der Lebenssituation von Afro-Amerikaner_innen in Deutschland bewusst ist und die die Lebenssituation Afriker_Innen in Deutschland und der von türkischen, italienischen, griechischen und spanischen Migrant_Innen, Asylant_Innen und Gastarbeiter_innen mit einbezieht und dennoch die eigene Existenz als Schwarze Deutsche - als Frage der Selbst-Empowerung in den Raum stellt. Welche Zukunft hat die Liebe unter solchen Bedingungen? Black gifted und Blue endet die Geschichte so auch mit dem Bewusstsein um das individuelle Scheitern angesichts die sozialen Dimension und Ausmaasse der Bedingungen. Die Wiedervereinigung sollte die latenten Rassismen einer nicht aufgearbeiteten kolonialen Vergangenheit, sowohl in Ost als auch in West Deutschland nach der Wiedervereinigung in Terror-Attacken gegen deutsche People of Colour zum Explodieren im Blutrausch bringen.
Die Geschichte ist inspiriert von dem Prosastück „Das dreissigste Jahr" von Ingeborg Bachmann, die als Teil der Gruppe 47 entscheidene Impulse im Nachkriegsdeutschland setzen konnte und setzt dagegen Hip Hop-Elemente aus dem von dem Black Power und civil-rights Struggle inspirierten Consciousness Movement speziell der radikalen Coleur von PUBLIC ENEMY.

Walking on foot brings you down to the very stark, naked core of existence. We travel too much in airplanes and cars. It’s an existential quality that we are losing. It’s almost like a credo of religion that we should walk.
There is, of course, something inherently romantic—if not heroic—about the extreme solitary explorer enveloped by nature. The very image of Herzog on foot recalls the iconic 19th-century paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, especially his Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, with its lone figure staring out at the wide vista above the clouds.
'Truth itself wanders through the forests,' Herzog writes near the end. Yet here he embroiders his memories for effect: The vast swath of geography between Munich and Paris is littered with industrial towns and cities.
Once he comes out on the other end, traversing the deforested Champs-Élysées (“We were close to what they call the breath of danger”), Herzog emerges victorious.

THE STORY/ The „Twentythird Year„ is a coming of age performance of a young protagonist TRACY trying to make a very own picture of the world. The death of a friend in confrontation with the police and the search for black roots after an easy white childhood triggers new existential questions and problems. Historically the peace from 1988 is the 1st BLACK DRAMA intervention by the Afro German Diaspora struggling for its own public voice in Germany.

DIE GESCHICHTE/ DAS „DREIUNDZWANZIGSTE JAHR ist eine Coming of Age Inszenierung in der ein/e Protagonist_In namens TRACY versucht sich ein Bild von der Welt zu machen. Das Trauma eine Freundin in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Polizei verloren zu haben und die Suche nach den eigenen kulturellen Wurzeln führen nach einer unbeschwerten „weissen" Kindheit plötzlich zu neuen existentiellen Fragen und Problemen.
Er/ Sie TRACY versucht sich an Befreiung innerhalb einer rassistischen Sprach-Kultur, in der Rassengesetze die Existenz von Schwarzen Deutschen per Gesetzgebung zu verbieten suchten.
Hier enteignet sich nun mehr die Sprache selber. Sie de-konstruiert ihre eigenen Grundstrukturen in Frage stellend und zerfetzt den strukturellen Alttagsrassismus, um im Zusammenspiel mit Musik und Perfomance Identitätsdiskurse zwischen Schwarz und Weiss und Frau und Mann neu zu verhandeln. Eine Identität innerhalb einer weissen postkolonialen Kultur, die die Verantwortung für den Genozid in Namibia ablehnt und sich gleichzeitig gegen Apartheid in Südafrika engagiert, oder sich gegen Rassismus in den USA empört. Denn Rassismus in Deutschland gibt es nicht.
Die Aufführung von 1988 ist eine der 1. Historischen Verhandlungen der Schwarzen Deutschen Diaspora (Afro Deutsche) im öffentlichen Raum und interveniert als performative Handlung die Grenze zwischen „privat" und „sozial" in der Kunstform des Strassentheaters. Afrika in Deutschland anhand von Schwarzen Deutschen Stoffen und Ästhetiken, die eine neue Perspektive suchen.
Eine eigene Perspektive die, die sich der Lebenssituation von Afro-Amerikaner_innen in Deutschland bewusst ist und die die Lebenssituation Afriker_Innen in Deutschland und der von türkischen, italienischen, griechischen und spanischen Migrant_Innen, Asylant_Innen und Gastarbeiter_innen mit einbezieht und dennoch die eigene Existenz als Schwarze Deutsche - als Frage der Selbst-Empowerung in den Raum stellt. Welche Zukunft hat die Liebe unter solchen Bedingungen? Black gifted und Blue endet die Geschichte so auch mit dem Bewusstsein um das individuelle Scheitern angesichts die sozialen Dimension und Ausmaasse der Bedingungen. Die Wiedervereinigung sollte die latenten Rassismen einer nicht aufgearbeiteten kolonialen Vergangenheit, sowohl in Ost als auch in West Deutschland nach der Wiedervereinigung in Terror-Attacken gegen deutsche People of Colour zum Explodieren im Blutrausch bringen.
Die Geschichte ist inspiriert von dem Prosastück „Das dreissigste Jahr" von Ingeborg Bachmann, die als Teil der Gruppe 47 entscheidene Impulse im Nachkriegsdeutschland setzen konnte und setzt dagegen Hip Hop-Elemente aus dem von dem Black Power und civil-rights Struggle inspirierten Consciousness Movement speziell der radikalen Coleur von PUBLIC ENEMY.

Personally, I believe that human life is completely meaningless, just a biological exercise along with the lichen, beetles, cats, trees and what have you.
Within this void you need some sort of framework, some anchor and way of gauging what to do and what is important. Different people have different reasons to live; religion, family, friends, the pursuit of pleasure, money, power; a mix of things.
You’ll appreciate that a diagram of every motivation known to mankind would get pretty complicated, so I’ve just gone for five interlaced bands. As the idea developed into the form of a diagram, I thought it would be interesting if it had some sort of logical structure. I decided to cover all of the line combinations once and once only. This took ages to work out, first calculating the permutations, and then getting them all in the correct places. I thought about doing 6 lines, but the addition of another colour increased the complexity considerably.
