Zoé Duchesne is a Canadian artist who has worked as a model on the international stage for the last 15 years. She has traveled the world representing the most prestigious brands, and now shares her time between Montreal and Paris.

In her late 20s, Duschesne’s love for the camera led her to acting. Before long, she recognized that aspiring actresses are treated much like models, relying on whoever wants to film them. She realized that creating was crucial to her development and so Poupée was born; a moving and crude character poetically embodying the artist’s emotional and psychological experiences.

Poupée is a broad self-portrait of short films and photographs. This standalone project can also be incorporated in live performance art. Borrowing elements from silent film, theatre of the grotesque and visual arts, the works in this series are a symbolic representation of humans’ existential crisis and inevitable loss of innocence. Together, these films and photographs constitute a powerful exhibit echoing phenomena from our consumerist society, such as the reign of image, body worship and hypersexualization. Intimate, witty and touching, Duchesne explores the anxiety stemming from these phenomena and tells of the inevitable path leading to her own rebirth.

A self-taught artist, Duchesne produces her work in a traditional manner. She does not use any artifices or image manipulation techniques typically found in the fashion photography world.

WILL BARROWS

Ink on paper

This is an enlargement of the self-portrait of the artist at work that illustrated the left side of Will Barrows' calling card.

Viewers will be struck by the odd contrast between Barrow's well-built cantilevered work surface and its generous proportions (it must be a faithful rendering of Barrows' actual drafting table) and his makeshift seat, a wooden box set on its end. Was he pulling our leg? Was he that eccentric? Poor?

The incongruities do not end there.

It must have been Barrows who knocked over an open ink or pigment container onto an otherwise tidy table, staining the surface and making a mess on the floor.

The neatly arranged art tools atop the table seem to exist in an altogether different world than Barrows, with his anguished expression and thousand-yard stare.

What are we to make of it? Was Barrows undergoing an existential crisis? Or was he just poking fun at himself for being a klutz?

In closing, do not believe your eyes. That is not a tablet computer and keyboard on the right side of the drafting table near the wall.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Will Barrows was a pioneer of Pacific County. Born in Nevada in 1867, his family moved to

Knappton, Washington while Will was still a child.

In 1890, he moved to Oysterville, then the county seat, and was deputy treasurer under his father George Barrows for one term.

In 1893, he married Ellen Tanger and moved to South Bend.

Barrows held many typical Northwest Coast jobs. He went steam boating as a marine engineer, and in 1896 went to Alaska. He returned the following year and settled with his family in Chinook, where he opened a general store.

They lived there for the next 18 years. Ellen Tanger Barrows was postmistress of Chinook for 14 years.

In the early 1900s Barrows also worked for the Chinook Observer as an illustrator.

Photographs were not able to be printed in newspapers at that time so it was Barrows who

documented the important issues of the day.

He clipped his finished drawings from the published paper and collected them in this scrapbook. It is both a record of the artist's work and also a record of the important events and issues of the day from the execution of Lum You in South Bend to the controversies of water quality in Seaview and fish traps in Chinook.

After his years in Chinook, Barrows continued his job seeking. For a time, he engaged in the logging business. From 1916 to 1917, he was a Marine engineer on whalers. He then entered the service of the U.S. Bureau of Education and was in charge of the Indian school at Kake, Alaska for four years. He resigned in 1924 and from then until 1927, again worked in

newspapers.

In 1927, he went to Seattle where he purchased a chicken ranch, and where he died in 1931.

The Heart of the Museum Part II: Seeing Local History Through Scrapbooks

Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, Ilwaco, Washington.

January 5 @ 10:00 am - March 9 @ 4:00 pm PST

Free

The idea of saving information in an orderly way to revisit, share and remember can be traced back to the Middle Ages when noblemen and women kept journals to record activities and events. While the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum does not have items from the Medieval era, we do have excellent examples of how scrapbooks were used by local residents.

This exhibition will present hundreds of scrapbooks from the permanent collection of the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum. From family bibles that are an early form of scrapbook, to modern collections of photographs and keepsakes, the scrapbook has served as an aid to memory and each one tells a story.

Presented will be a variety of scrapbooks including institutional examples from The American Legion Don R. Grable Post 48, Modern Travelers, Long Beach Peninsula Business and Professional Women’s Club, and the Sandpipers Square Dance Club among others.

Personal Scrapbooks are a fascinating look into the lives of their creators. Many scrapbooks represent a slice of time. Several examples of High School scrapbooks will be on view from the 1930s to the 1960s. Some individuals kept extensive scrapbooks that document decades of time. Jay Hardin kept meticulously detailed scrapbooks of the night skies that he photographed and painted from his home on Baker Bay. Theresa Potter was a local historian who kept information about all aspects of Peninsula history in dozens of scrapbooks. Sydney Stevens, another well-known local, documented years of her life in Oysterville through her photo scrapbooks.

One of the largest collections of scrapbooks was made by Gordon Schoewe, who after a successful career as a graphic designer for Boeing, relocated to the Long Beach Peninsula with his partner Roy Gustafson. Together they renovated the Gull Motel (now Boardwalk Cottages), owned and operated the Book Vendor and were active members of the local community.

Heart of the Museum: Seeing History through Scrapbooks will open January 5th and will be on view until March 9, 2024

The Story of a Tokyo Bookseller is an ode to the pleasure of reading and the power of books to help us connect with others and lead us to ourselves.

Nanako is in the midst of an existential crisis. Recently separated from her husband, she no longer has a home: she wanders between capsule hotels, internet cafes open late and super sento, and public pay toilets. Her work is no better: at the eccentric Village Vanguard bookstore in Tokyo, where she is the director, sales are languishing. Disillusioned and disillusioned, Nanako realizes how narrow her life has become, with no personal relationships beyond her colleagues and no prospects. There is only one passion that allows her to move forward: her passion for books. Until one day, on impulse, Nanako signs up to a “quick” dating site, where people have thirty minutes to meet, talk, and connect. Often to find a partner, but also simply to establish contact with another human being in the big city. To stand out among the many profiles, Nanako presents herself as a bookseller who can recommend "the book that will change your life" and the first matches are not long in coming. Thus begins a year of meetings with an eclectic range of strangers: for many, books are just a pretext, others instead enthusiastically rely on Nanako's advice. There are those who discover for the first time the wonder of immersing themselves in the pages, those who even pull out an erotic novel from the drawer, those who are looking for a true friendship they can count on. Between moments of disenchantment and bursts of enthusiasm, Nanako realizes that long-forgotten dreams are reawakening within her: there is a person who, more than anyone, she wants to meet, and a bookstore that represents everything she has always wanted...

I’ve started the project “Twelve months of film” in 2024, after a few years of inactivity due to stuff like existential dread, the ever-looming-over-our-heads capitalist hellscape, sheer laziness, and the biggest offender of all - imposter syndrome.

I decided to (at the very least try) to master two of my cameras during this year - the Olympus OM10 and Zenit 12XP, so here are both of them, accompanied with the lenses that will be used with them - Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.8, Sigma super-wide II 24mm f2.8 and Olympus Zuiko MC auto-zoom 35-70mm f4 for the Olympus, and Helios 44M-4 58mm f2 and Focal 28mm f2.8 for the Zenit.

The plan is to document the process in as many places as possible, for the sake (and hope) of accountability.

Had a slight existential crisis and unfortunately backed away from Tiona for a while. But a couple of days to myself and an attempt at being girly again has got my mojo back

Walking on foot brings you down to the very stark, naked core of existence. We travel too much in airplanes and cars. It’s an existential quality that we are losing. It’s almost like a credo of religion that we should walk.

There is, of course, something inherently romantic—if not heroic—about the extreme solitary explorer enveloped by nature. The very image of Herzog on foot recalls the iconic 19th-century paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, especially his Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, with its lone figure staring out at the wide vista above the clouds.

'Truth itself wanders through the forests,' Herzog writes near the end. Yet here he embroiders his memories for effect: The vast swath of geography between Munich and Paris is littered with industrial towns and cities.

Once he comes out on the other end, traversing the deforested Champs-Élysées (“We were close to what they call the breath of danger”), Herzog emerges victorious.

A relative of this guy, methinks.

Last graffiti shot for a while, I promise.

"Existential Crisis 22: A Hole in One" Blaise Pascal said, "The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me." I am an insignificant being, one with a hole at my core. And a black hole swallows the hole that is my essence. I am a vacuum inside a vacuum, nothing inside of nothingness. My dilemma "lies in not just staying alive, but in finding something to live for."*

*Fyodor Dostoyevsky, "The Brothers Karamazov"

here's a note i wrote regarding running. sorry it's a bit long, but thought i'd share with any runners out there.

____

What I think I'm thinking about when I'm thinking about running

I’m often asked what I think about when I’m on my long runs. I used to think that I never thought about anything, probably because I never remembered anything that I thought about. I suspect many people might not have done the exact same repetitive motion for two, three, or four hours straight, and hence the curiosity of what goes through our heads.

On closer examination, I’ve begun to realize that there are in fact many random thoughts that float in and out of the mind while I run. Some fleeting ones of no consequence, some self-motivational ones to get through those miles, some existential ones pondering whether I really exist.

Having just finished the final long pre-marathon run last weekend – I felt compelled that I had to finish this – my attempt at actually writing down some of these things.

So, as a bit of a homage to Mr. Karnazes and Mr. Murakami, truly incredible runners and writers, here’s my little version of what I think about when I think about running. At least, it’s what I think I’m thinking about.

***

I have been a bit apprehensive about this particular long run. This was the last long one before tapering started. It has been my target to go sub-4 hours for the full marathon. Not a particularly lofty goal, but with my haphazard training it was already looking to be an impossibility. But just to give myself a fighting chance – I had to do at least 32km, preferably 40km. People often think that because I’ve done it before, 30 odd kilometers should be a breeze. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. Anything above 20km still intimidates the hell out of me. It’s at least 2 hours of non-stop pounding on the pavement. It’s not fun. Most people might not know this, but marathon training is much, much more painful than running the marathon race itself.

The first 32 km I survived relatively unscathed, but the last 8km destroyed me. It seemed like the marathon wanted to remind me that it was to be fully respected. The 40km took me exactly 4 hours and every ounce of whatever I had left to complete it – so a sub-4 hour marathon was essentially out of question. But like past runs, it was the fourth hour that was the most interesting – it is when the suffering is at its maximum. Struggling with every step, I kept asking myself, what is it that actually hurts? Was I out of breath? Not really, yes, I was breathing hard, but not out of breath. Cramping? No. Did I pull anything? Negative again. But the whole body was screaming to stop. My legs, my back, my lungs, all wanted me just to stop. It was almost a curious feeling. There’s no true, intense pain but the feeling is the verge of imminent collapse, but you can’t pinpoint where it’s coming from. It’s almost like a system shutdown, or, more appropriately, the little dialog box that pops up and asks if you are “sure” you want to shut down.

But it is at those precise times, that I unfailingly get the epiphany – that I am not my body. I will not delve too much here on what this “I” is (my brain? self? consciousness?) – but it becomes clear there is a tangible separation between my body and “I”, or this thing, my mind. The body makes it plenty evident that it really does not want to continue, whereas my mind is forcibly imparting messages to get the body to continue. Nerve pulses of equal strength are sending immensely strong signals back that this is wrong and must cease. It's a damn bloody battle and it's all happening inside my head.

***

I think everyone has a "natural point of pain". Anyone who has run a considerable distance has probably encountered this. This point varies person to person, runner to runner, due to our fitness levels, genes, and all sorts of different factors, but for everyone, there is this point when the body starts to rebel. Beyond this, you summon your mental strength, inner will, and call upon your faith to power yourself through. You might be a beginner doing your first fifteen minute run, you might be going for twentieth marathon. But at some point, you know if you’re going to do this, you have to override your body. Unfortunately, the mind does not always win. Sometimes, it simply gives up fighting, and the body wins out by slowing or stopping altogether. You feel better but a lot worse at the same time. After a few moments, the battle resumes… are you going to continue or throw in the towel?

It actually is very hard to describe what the point is of running long distances and marathons. It’s not fun, and far from it in fact, and really can’t be considered to be a “hobby”. It’s self-imposed pain. Of course, there’s a degree of pride and a sense of accomplishment in finishing a marathon. At the same time, I had always thought marathoners had to be slightly insane. Runners used to strike me as a weird breed, and I had always considered myself to be fairly normal. I think.

So, why do we run? More specifically, why do I run?

***

The truth is, I don’t really know. I guess I do have some conjectures. I think I might be subconsciously trying to compensate for my lack of athleticism when I was younger. I played sports but was never good enough to be competitive. Another part is curiousity: I’m also simply interested in the act of running itself. Why would people subject themselves to this? As Jerry Seinfeld remarked, “I think that's why people run these marathons: 'I wonder if I could run that far without dying.' It's idiotic, but it's part of human nature.” My key inspiration has been Dean Karnazes, most noted for his book “Ultramarathon Man” where he describes running a 199-mile 12-man relay race. He ran it alone, over two straight days. 8 marathons back-to-back. I simply did not know that the human body could take that kind of punishment. It was a direct result of the book that I decided to go for my first marathon last year. Just to see how it was like.

Perhaps one of the bigger reasons is that running is one of the few things in life that’s reasonably fair. It’s important not to compare with others – there are always those people who can run a marathon without training, those who can run twice as fast as we can without any apparent effort. But for us mortals, the work and reward ratio is reasonably proportional. We train harder, we run faster. We slack off, then a short run becomes an arduous run. The long runs becomes a struggle for life and death. But as Murakami aptly pointed out, this too passes – we are all subject to the inevitability of age and eventually our bodies do go downhill. However, for many of us who have not been running our entire lives, there is still abundant room for improvement.

Another thing that people ask me about is the legendary “runner’s high”. Even before I took up running, I had read about this, and wondered. Perhaps I am simply not one of the lucky ones. I think it’s possible that the very fact I look for and expect it at some point causes it to be so elusive. As soon as I consciously realize that this might be the “runner’s high”, ironically, it vanishes. But, during my long runs, I do encounter periods of mind void. It’s not a bad kind of void, but more like a state when I feel like a running being. The breath, the feet seem to be moving in unison, like clockwork. The feeling is that I could run forever, and there seems to be no effort whatsoever – like a metronome going back and forth, back and forth. Rather than the runner’s high, perhaps what I experience is a “runner’s void”, if there is such a thing. While it’s a state of mindlessness, paradoxically at the same time I feel curiously connected to something that’s not quite tangible. To borrow a yoga saying, when the dust in the mind finally settles, consciousness takes on its true nature. I really don’t quite know what that means, but during these periods of mind void, I do “feel” a comprehension of existence that’s beyond words.

***

Running is a very strange and humbling experience. It manages to bring joy and pain, and at the same time. When I’m feeling fine, the effort exerted brings me back to reality. When I’m not feeling so fine, I’m almost comforted by the feeling of futility. Because no matter what day, what time, how much sleep I had gotten, I can absolutely count on feeling tired, exhausted, and encounter the familiar feeling that I simply can’t go on. Maybe, subconsciously I know I’ve powered through these dark times in running, and I’ll be able to similarly do the same in my life. Or maybe, it simply is the familiarity of pain and suffering under a more “controlled” setting that makes me feel relatively at ease again.

This final 8km struggle I did probably came at an opportune time – my recent mental state has just been out of whack. In any case, it seems, for now, I have managed to reset myself.

The pain of running also makes me grateful. Because we forget that the absence of pain actually feels incredible. Grateful for yoga to have healed my knees, so that I now have a reasonably healthy body to abuse. Grateful for close ones who have been so supportive and tolerant. Grateful that there’s the opportunity to ponder such things.

Every whisper, of every waking hour

I'm choosing my confessions

Trying to keep an eye on you

Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool

Oh no I've said too much

I set it up

Consider this

Consider this, the hint of the century

Consider this the slip

That brought me to my knees, failed

What if all these fantasies come

Flailing aground

Now I've said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing

I thought that I heard you sing

I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream

That was just a dream

Secret No. 16: I'm unsinkable.

Not in the philosophical/existential kind of way. What I meant was that I can't sink. I have buoyancy issues. I just float. I'm a human life vest.

I got my sea legs early in life 'cause my papa owned big boats when we were little. We used to have these weekend fishing expeditions and papa was perfectly comfortable letting me run around the deck cause he knows if I went overboard, I'll just float. I'm a total water baby even then.

This was taken in the marine sanctuary just off Balicasag Island in Bohol. Left side of the dippy shows a drop from one meter of shallow coral floors to about 150 meter of vast emptiness. Fun and scary and the same time. Right side is just a pathetic attempt at underwater self portraiture. Camwh*ring under the sea. (",)

― Of Walking in Ice: (Munich-Paris, 23 November–14 December 1974)

by Werner Herzog

Quoting Esko's blog post from last August:

"Charles Dickens wrote as he described the time of the French Revolution:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness.

Did he also describe our time? The time when everything is getting better and better and worse and worse, faster and faster, as Tom Atlee wrote.

The key dynamic is to move forward towards a more profound experience of ethics, and also aesthetics, in a way that increases our collective capacity to connect and solve the common problems on the existential level that we face.

The educational task is to learn, to train our mind, to have a more thoughtful worldview based on the fundamental interdependence of all species. It is a world in which things don’t have distinctive essences that set them apart from one another, unless we wrongly separate them."

[The piece of art in the pic: Tiimalasi (Hourglass) by Ulla Rantanen (1996)]

The kit and its assembly:

A very simple project, and basically just an OOB kit in the colors of a fictional operator. The whole thing was inspired by the question: what could have been a predecessor of the Ecuadorean Mirage F.1s? Not an existential question that might pop up frequently, but I quickly decided that the Mystère IV would have been a good/plausible contender. I found this idea even more attractive when I considered a camouflage paint scheme for it, because you only get either French or Indian machines in a uniform NMF outfit or IDF Mystères in desert camouflage (either in brown/blue or the later sand/earth/green scheme).

The kit is the venerable Matchbox Mystère IVA, even though in its Revell re-boxing. It’s a very simple affair, with partly crude details like the landing gear or the dreaded “trenches” for engraved surface details, esp. on the wings. But it goes together quite well, and with some corrections and additions you get a decent model.

The kit was basically built OOB, I just added underwings pylons with some ordnance for a fighter bomber mission: a pair of drop tanks and two SNEB missile launcher pods (tanks leftover from a Sword F-94, IIRC, and the pods from a Matchbox G.91Y). A complete tub with a floor and with side consoles (origin is uncertain, though – maybe it came from an Xtrakit Supermarin Swift?) was fitted to the cockpit and the primitive OOB ejection seat was replaced with something more convincing, pimped with seatbelts (masking tape) and ejection trigger handles (thin wire).

The flaps were lowered for a more natural look, and I added small oval boundary layer fences from a BAe Hawk as a personal twist. The clumsy front wheel, originally molded onto the strut as a single piece, was replaced with something better. The main landing gear covers were replaced with thinner styrene sheet material (the OOB parts are VERY thick) and pieces from hollow steel needles were implanted into the respective fairings as gun barrels.

A thinner pitot, created from heated sprue material, was used instead of the rather massive OOB part. The ranging radar fairing in the intake was slightly enlarged with the help of white glue. And, finally, a piece of sprue was implanted into the fin’s base as a brake parachute fairing, reminiscent of the Polish Lim-6/7, license-produced MiG-17s.
