Walking on foot brings you down to the very stark, naked core of existence. We travel too much in airplanes and cars. It’s an existential quality that we are losing. It’s almost like a credo of religion that we should walk.
There is, of course, something inherently romantic—if not heroic—about the extreme solitary explorer enveloped by nature. The very image of Herzog on foot recalls the iconic 19th-century paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, especially his Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, with its lone figure staring out at the wide vista above the clouds.
'Truth itself wanders through the forests,' Herzog writes near the end. Yet here he embroiders his memories for effect: The vast swath of geography between Munich and Paris is littered with industrial towns and cities.
Once he comes out on the other end, traversing the deforested Champs-Élysées (“We were close to what they call the breath of danger”), Herzog emerges victorious.

The Story of a Tokyo Bookseller is an ode to the pleasure of reading and the power of books to help us connect with others and lead us to ourselves.
Nanako is in the midst of an existential crisis. Recently separated from her husband, she no longer has a home: she wanders between capsule hotels, internet cafes open late and super sento, and public pay toilets. Her work is no better: at the eccentric Village Vanguard bookstore in Tokyo, where she is the director, sales are languishing. Disillusioned and disillusioned, Nanako realizes how narrow her life has become, with no personal relationships beyond her colleagues and no prospects. There is only one passion that allows her to move forward: her passion for books. Until one day, on impulse, Nanako signs up to a “quick” dating site, where people have thirty minutes to meet, talk, and connect. Often to find a partner, but also simply to establish contact with another human being in the big city. To stand out among the many profiles, Nanako presents herself as a bookseller who can recommend "the book that will change your life" and the first matches are not long in coming. Thus begins a year of meetings with an eclectic range of strangers: for many, books are just a pretext, others instead enthusiastically rely on Nanako's advice. There are those who discover for the first time the wonder of immersing themselves in the pages, those who even pull out an erotic novel from the drawer, those who are looking for a true friendship they can count on. Between moments of disenchantment and bursts of enthusiasm, Nanako realizes that long-forgotten dreams are reawakening within her: there is a person who, more than anyone, she wants to meet, and a bookstore that represents everything she has always wanted...
When I travel to Europe I love their book selection there. I bring back a lot! Wish we had that selection in US.

Original artwork based on a self portrait. I love the existential question, and quest: Who am I? Identity is as much an internal state as it is imposed on us by external actors.

here's a note i wrote regarding running. sorry it's a bit long, but thought i'd share with any runners out there.
____
What I think I'm thinking about when I'm thinking about running
I’m often asked what I think about when I’m on my long runs. I used to think that I never thought about anything, probably because I never remembered anything that I thought about. I suspect many people might not have done the exact same repetitive motion for two, three, or four hours straight, and hence the curiosity of what goes through our heads.
On closer examination, I’ve begun to realize that there are in fact many random thoughts that float in and out of the mind while I run. Some fleeting ones of no consequence, some self-motivational ones to get through those miles, some existential ones pondering whether I really exist.
Having just finished the final long pre-marathon run last weekend – I felt compelled that I had to finish this – my attempt at actually writing down some of these things.
So, as a bit of a homage to Mr. Karnazes and Mr. Murakami, truly incredible runners and writers, here’s my little version of what I think about when I think about running. At least, it’s what I think I’m thinking about.
***
I have been a bit apprehensive about this particular long run. This was the last long one before tapering started. It has been my target to go sub-4 hours for the full marathon. Not a particularly lofty goal, but with my haphazard training it was already looking to be an impossibility. But just to give myself a fighting chance – I had to do at least 32km, preferably 40km. People often think that because I’ve done it before, 30 odd kilometers should be a breeze. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. Anything above 20km still intimidates the hell out of me. It’s at least 2 hours of non-stop pounding on the pavement. It’s not fun. Most people might not know this, but marathon training is much, much more painful than running the marathon race itself.
The first 32 km I survived relatively unscathed, but the last 8km destroyed me. It seemed like the marathon wanted to remind me that it was to be fully respected. The 40km took me exactly 4 hours and every ounce of whatever I had left to complete it – so a sub-4 hour marathon was essentially out of question. But like past runs, it was the fourth hour that was the most interesting – it is when the suffering is at its maximum. Struggling with every step, I kept asking myself, what is it that actually hurts? Was I out of breath? Not really, yes, I was breathing hard, but not out of breath. Cramping? No. Did I pull anything? Negative again. But the whole body was screaming to stop. My legs, my back, my lungs, all wanted me just to stop. It was almost a curious feeling. There’s no true, intense pain but the feeling is the verge of imminent collapse, but you can’t pinpoint where it’s coming from. It’s almost like a system shutdown, or, more appropriately, the little dialog box that pops up and asks if you are “sure” you want to shut down.
But it is at those precise times, that I unfailingly get the epiphany – that I am not my body. I will not delve too much here on what this “I” is (my brain? self? consciousness?) – but it becomes clear there is a tangible separation between my body and “I”, or this thing, my mind. The body makes it plenty evident that it really does not want to continue, whereas my mind is forcibly imparting messages to get the body to continue. Nerve pulses of equal strength are sending immensely strong signals back that this is wrong and must cease. It's a damn bloody battle and it's all happening inside my head.
***
I think everyone has a "natural point of pain". Anyone who has run a considerable distance has probably encountered this. This point varies person to person, runner to runner, due to our fitness levels, genes, and all sorts of different factors, but for everyone, there is this point when the body starts to rebel. Beyond this, you summon your mental strength, inner will, and call upon your faith to power yourself through. You might be a beginner doing your first fifteen minute run, you might be going for twentieth marathon. But at some point, you know if you’re going to do this, you have to override your body. Unfortunately, the mind does not always win. Sometimes, it simply gives up fighting, and the body wins out by slowing or stopping altogether. You feel better but a lot worse at the same time. After a few moments, the battle resumes… are you going to continue or throw in the towel?
It actually is very hard to describe what the point is of running long distances and marathons. It’s not fun, and far from it in fact, and really can’t be considered to be a “hobby”. It’s self-imposed pain. Of course, there’s a degree of pride and a sense of accomplishment in finishing a marathon. At the same time, I had always thought marathoners had to be slightly insane. Runners used to strike me as a weird breed, and I had always considered myself to be fairly normal. I think.
So, why do we run? More specifically, why do I run?
***
The truth is, I don’t really know. I guess I do have some conjectures. I think I might be subconsciously trying to compensate for my lack of athleticism when I was younger. I played sports but was never good enough to be competitive. Another part is curiousity: I’m also simply interested in the act of running itself. Why would people subject themselves to this? As Jerry Seinfeld remarked, “I think that's why people run these marathons: 'I wonder if I could run that far without dying.' It's idiotic, but it's part of human nature.” My key inspiration has been Dean Karnazes, most noted for his book “Ultramarathon Man” where he describes running a 199-mile 12-man relay race. He ran it alone, over two straight days. 8 marathons back-to-back. I simply did not know that the human body could take that kind of punishment. It was a direct result of the book that I decided to go for my first marathon last year. Just to see how it was like.
Perhaps one of the bigger reasons is that running is one of the few things in life that’s reasonably fair. It’s important not to compare with others – there are always those people who can run a marathon without training, those who can run twice as fast as we can without any apparent effort. But for us mortals, the work and reward ratio is reasonably proportional. We train harder, we run faster. We slack off, then a short run becomes an arduous run. The long runs becomes a struggle for life and death. But as Murakami aptly pointed out, this too passes – we are all subject to the inevitability of age and eventually our bodies do go downhill. However, for many of us who have not been running our entire lives, there is still abundant room for improvement.
Another thing that people ask me about is the legendary “runner’s high”. Even before I took up running, I had read about this, and wondered. Perhaps I am simply not one of the lucky ones. I think it’s possible that the very fact I look for and expect it at some point causes it to be so elusive. As soon as I consciously realize that this might be the “runner’s high”, ironically, it vanishes. But, during my long runs, I do encounter periods of mind void. It’s not a bad kind of void, but more like a state when I feel like a running being. The breath, the feet seem to be moving in unison, like clockwork. The feeling is that I could run forever, and there seems to be no effort whatsoever – like a metronome going back and forth, back and forth. Rather than the runner’s high, perhaps what I experience is a “runner’s void”, if there is such a thing. While it’s a state of mindlessness, paradoxically at the same time I feel curiously connected to something that’s not quite tangible. To borrow a yoga saying, when the dust in the mind finally settles, consciousness takes on its true nature. I really don’t quite know what that means, but during these periods of mind void, I do “feel” a comprehension of existence that’s beyond words.
***
Running is a very strange and humbling experience. It manages to bring joy and pain, and at the same time. When I’m feeling fine, the effort exerted brings me back to reality. When I’m not feeling so fine, I’m almost comforted by the feeling of futility. Because no matter what day, what time, how much sleep I had gotten, I can absolutely count on feeling tired, exhausted, and encounter the familiar feeling that I simply can’t go on. Maybe, subconsciously I know I’ve powered through these dark times in running, and I’ll be able to similarly do the same in my life. Or maybe, it simply is the familiarity of pain and suffering under a more “controlled” setting that makes me feel relatively at ease again.
This final 8km struggle I did probably came at an opportune time – my recent mental state has just been out of whack. In any case, it seems, for now, I have managed to reset myself.
The pain of running also makes me grateful. Because we forget that the absence of pain actually feels incredible. Grateful for yoga to have healed my knees, so that I now have a reasonably healthy body to abuse. Grateful for close ones who have been so supportive and tolerant. Grateful that there’s the opportunity to ponder such things.

In this project I have been exploring the feeling of alienation. In order to understand this topic more fully I researched philosophers and psychologists. In doing this, I learnt more in depth about current schools of thought relating to the concept of alienation. This was important because it informed the meaning and intentions behind all my physical work completed in this project. It allowed me to collect my thoughts and ideas and link them to pre existing philosophies. Albert Camus is an existentialist philosopher who wrote about the absurd, human mortality and suicide. In his book, The Outsider, the protagonist, Meursault, becomes so alienated from reality that he does not mourn his mother's death, does not care about getting married and eventually does not care about killing a man or being executed for this. Camus believed that humans had no purpose or meaning and that we must create these for ourselves. It can be hard to do this and failure to do this can lead to alienation in all forms. This school of thought came into popularity after World War 2 due to a questioning of religion, something that gives people purpose. This questioning resulted from the atrocities that were committed in the war. The ‘existential attitude’ is a feeling of dread or disorientation felt when faced with a meaningless and absurd world. This feeling also affected the art world, with movements like abstract expressionism emerging. Inspired by surrealist ideas, abstract expressionism is a movement which emphasises the self, anxiety and grief being expressed through vigourous, active brush strokes and expressive mark making.
Another existentialist philosopher I researched was Sartre. One of his key ideas was bad faith. This is when a person submits to societal forces and does not utilise their personal freedom. Sartre’s common example was a waiter who is too ‘waiter-esque’, too eager to please, too absorbed in his waiter identity that he has forgotten he is a free entity. He is acting inauthentically and therefore is suppressing his freedom. In this modern interconnected world I believe people are acting in bad faith more and more as there is not often a time when one is truly alone. We are always communicating via social media. We act as our perceived ‘best’ form of ourselves where we are not actually being free. We are merely pretending to be ‘cooler’ than we actually are, pretending that we fit into societies boxes, when, more often than not, we don’t. This is possibly a reason for increased mental health issues in today’s society (although I do not believe this is the only or even the main reason).
A psychologist I researched was Carl Jung. He was a psychodynamic psychologist who worked with Freud and the Vienna Society. He wrote about the shadow self. This is an unconscious part of the self which one does not identify with oneself. Contrary to Freud’s definition of the shadow, Jung believed it not only contains very negative parts of oneself but also can contain positive parts; it is comprised of anything hidden from our consciousness. Positive parts of the self are more commonly held in the shadow in people suffering from mental health disorders like low self esteem and anxiety. Jung wrote that the shadow is the animalistic and instinctive part of the self which the ego suppresses when you develop out of childhood. It is linked with the Id, the part of the self which operates on the pleasure principle. Jung also wrote that the shadow is prone to psychological projection, a phenomenon where a persons insecurities and perceived deficiencies are projected onto another person. For example, someone who is very intolerant may call someone else intolerant when they are called out on their intolerance. They do not want to believe they are intolerant and have not accepted that part of themselves so they use projection as a defence mechanism. Furthermore, Jung wrote that the shadow self is a window to creativity and expressing one’s true self, “in spite of its function as a reservoir for human darkness, or perhaps because of this, the shadow is the seat of creativity”. I feel that all of these philosophical and psychological ideas will be very interesting to express through visual art.
After this research I went on to research artists whose ideas linked to existentialist philosophy and psychodynamic psychology. One artist I researched was Francis Bacon. He was a painter from the 1900s who painted grotesque, raw and bold images. Usually portraits, his paintings are distorted and mangled into emotional expressions of the artists own troubles. He had a troubled life, one example being kicked out of his home at 15 because of his homosexuality. A lot of these troubles shine through in his paintings. His paintings often have an element of aggressive expressionism, using obvious brush strokes and mark-making to accentuate the raw emotion he is expressing in his paintings. The distortion of the face could link to Sartre’s idea of bad faith, the figures changing and distorting themselves to fit into societies prescribed boxes, creating ugly versions of oneself. Also, it could link to the shadow self as it is an ugly representation of the figure which seems surreal or disconnected to reality.
Another artist who links to these ideas is Giacometti. Although his most famous works are his sculptures, I think his paintings are also very interesting. They often depict a figure sitting, staring straight at the viewer. The colours he uses are very muted, creating a negative, depressing mood. His brush strokes are again expressive, attacking the canvas with colour. This creates a sense of anxiety and conflict. This may be felt by the subject, the artist and the viewer. The proportions of the subject are often distorted, stretched to make them more slender, almost ghost-like.
A third artist I researched who greatly influenced my work was Emilio Villalba. His paintings are a mismatch of facial features. He greatly distorts the face of his subjects, creating a strange, eerie mood. The dark background contrasts the often over saturated face, creating interesting depth in his works. He often combines elements of realism with very expressive areas, adding to the surreal, psychological mood. From these artists I created responses, meaning I learnt more fully about the techniques they use. They also informed my first photoshoot which I presented in my source book. This photoshoot contained simple portraits that I intended to distort and change through my drawings and paintings. They helped to link my ideas into ideas for my own pieces. For example, throughout my project I experimented with lighting to create a dark almost ghostlike atmosphere.
After completing my source book, I started to work on the main book. I completed in depth research on two artists, Kwang Ho Shin and Frank Auerbach. From Kwang Ho Shin I learnt about impasto, a technique used by both of these artists to create an interesting, distorted image. Another idea I learnt from Kwang Ho Shin was to use bold, unnatural colours. This creates the unnatural mood. It could be related to the modern, technological world where we are becoming more and more detached from nature, also linking to my idea of modern bad faith. Also, I learnt about contrast. In his paintings, Kwang Ho Shin uses a large amount of contrast with the often plain white canvas backgrounds and the textural, bold figure. He also accentuates this with the black areas of the figure. This leads to the creation of an interesting image and could symbolise our detachment from society. From Auerbach I learnt about choosing subject matter. He said, “I find myself simply more engaged when I know the people. They get older and change; there is something touching about that, about recording something that’s getting on.” I believe that using yourself and subjects you know well in real life can lead to the creation of more intimate and honest pieces because you aren’t creating the emotions, you are expressing existing emotions which you have insight into. This lead to me predominantly using myself and my girlfriend in my pieces as I felt that we are the people I know best, meaning I know more of what's going on inside our heads. Another technique I learnt from Auerbach and Kwang Ho Shin was the use of randomness. Although it is generally informed randomness, it often can lead to a very honest piece as you are allowing your subconscious to take over. This links to a surrealist idea of automatism (used by artists like André Masson and Joan Miro) and Jean Arp’s use of randomness in pieces like ‘Collage with Squares Arranged According to the Laws of Chance’. I also learnt about colour from Auerbach with his use of distorted colours. Unlike Kwang Ho Shin, Auerbach doesn’t use such vibrant colours, creating a more moody atmosphere.
Using ideas from this in depth research and previous research, I took the first large photoshoot. I placed objects over the lens, used long exposure techniques and used coloured LEDs to distort the image. I tried to capture an atmosphere of uneasiness and anxiety. These ideas come from existentialist ideas like bad faith. The images distortions could signify the distortions we make to ourselves in order to fit into society. The bright colours take the images further away from reality. This lead to the creation of a series of work from these photos. I took ideas of mixed media from Kwang Ho Shin. I used chalk, charcoal and pastel to create surreal, sometimes angry self portraits using ideas from Kwang Ho Shin and Auerbach. I also drew a skull, using the macabre idea from artists like Ensor and Bacon. I also created many continuous line drawings, using a range of different techniques. In some of the pieces I tied multiple pens of different colours together, using ideas of unnatural colour from Auerbach and Kwang Ho Shin. I also used extended arm techniques where I tied a pen to a 30cm ruler and drew with that. Some other continuous line drawings used a dark background with a white pen, again taking ideas of contrast and dark backgrounds from artist research. All of these continuous line drawings have an element of randomness, an idea from Auerbach and Kwang Ho Shin. They also strongly link to surrealist automatism.
A second photoshoot was then carried out. This photoshoot was just 2 photos which I then made many photoshopped versions of. This photoshoot was heavily influenced by Emilio Villalba and his tapestries of facial features. I tried to distort the images to create a mood of estrangement and alienation. Similarly to the first photo shoot, this one was influenced by bad faith, just expressed in a different way. The duplicated facial features and the disfigurement expresses the way one warps oneself into the boxes society forces us into. This lead to the creation of many more pieces using ideas of distortion and uneasiness. I tried to capture this through the use of pencil, pen, paint, pastel and more. In some of my pieces, I added colours to further emphasize the existentialist ideas from the first photoshoot. In others, I used impasto, a technique learned from Auerbach and Shin. The impasto further accentuates the ideas of bad faith and alienation. Another technique I used was expressive line. This was learnt from the line drawings of Giacometti and Auerbach. This allows me to express emotion through the gestures I make while drawing the piece. If I am angry, the lines will be more erratic and rough. For example, the black and red self portrait with felt tip pen was drawn when I was in a very angry mood. Another example was the mixed media self portrait where it started off as a pencil drawing. As I was carefully drawing it, the outcome was not what I wanted, making me quite angry. I then expressed this anger through the gestural paint and pen. The anger could link to the idea of bad faith and the shadow self through it being an expression of frustration of our true self (or our unconscious self) when we are forced to confine it to society's norms. This unconscious frustration and alienation from ourselves can often be the cause of irrational anger that seems to come from nowhere.
I then decided to work towards creating a final piece. I was aiming to experiment with different techniques and compositions which I felt would sum up my ideas the most fully. I experimented with cropping out most of the face and making the focal point the eye. I feel that the eyes are the most expressive part of the face and can reveal the most about a person's feelings. Another aspect I experimented with was colour. Using ideas from my first photoshoot I quickly chose to use unnatural colours. I didn’t wish to use colours as vibrant as Kwang Ho Shin because I felt that more muted colours create a darker mood. I wanted the colours to be similar to real life but still far enough away to create the surreal mood. This was the same in the proportions I distorted. This links to the idea of the ‘Uncanny valley’ which suggests that ‘humanoid objects which appear almost, but not exactly, like real human beings elicit uncanny, or strangely familiar, feelings of eeriness and revulsion in observers’. In terms of composition, I created many quick drawings experimenting with composition. I decided to use a black background as it contrasts nicely with the colours and almost signifies that the figures are subconscious representations as they are not placed into reality. This was inspired by Emilio Villalba and some of Bacon’s work. I created two oil pastel pieces heavily inspired by Francis Bacon’s distorted portraits. I was aiming to capture the way we warp our self by warping the physical self. This led to more research into Francis Bacon’s process and I learned that he used unprimed canvas. This meant that in my development I experimented with different fabrics and found that I liked the unprimed canvas the most. It creates an interesting texture and I prefer the way it feels to paint on as it is rough and lends itself to a rough and expressive style of painting. He also painted a lot of triptychs. I decided on painting a triptych because they allow for time to be included in the piece. I decided to create a piece that gets more and more disoriented and warped, showing how over time we get more and more alienated from our true selves as we get more indoctrinated into societies norms. The composition of the triptych will have the least distorted piece in the center as it will be the most eye catching of the three and provide context for the more distorted ones.
The more I learn about myself, the more I fear myself. I’m told I should remain neutral. A Switzerland of the mind.
The kit and its assembly:
A very simple project, and basically just an OOB kit in the colors of a fictional operator. The whole thing was inspired by the question: what could have been a predecessor of the Ecuadorean Mirage F.1s? Not an existential question that might pop up frequently, but I quickly decided that the Mystère IV would have been a good/plausible contender. I found this idea even more attractive when I considered a camouflage paint scheme for it, because you only get either French or Indian machines in a uniform NMF outfit or IDF Mystères in desert camouflage (either in brown/blue or the later sand/earth/green scheme).
The kit is the venerable Matchbox Mystère IVA, even though in its Revell re-boxing. It’s a very simple affair, with partly crude details like the landing gear or the dreaded “trenches” for engraved surface details, esp. on the wings. But it goes together quite well, and with some corrections and additions you get a decent model.
The kit was basically built OOB, I just added underwings pylons with some ordnance for a fighter bomber mission: a pair of drop tanks and two SNEB missile launcher pods (tanks leftover from a Sword F-94, IIRC, and the pods from a Matchbox G.91Y). A complete tub with a floor and with side consoles (origin is uncertain, though – maybe it came from an Xtrakit Supermarin Swift?) was fitted to the cockpit and the primitive OOB ejection seat was replaced with something more convincing, pimped with seatbelts (masking tape) and ejection trigger handles (thin wire).
The flaps were lowered for a more natural look, and I added small oval boundary layer fences from a BAe Hawk as a personal twist. The clumsy front wheel, originally molded onto the strut as a single piece, was replaced with something better. The main landing gear covers were replaced with thinner styrene sheet material (the OOB parts are VERY thick) and pieces from hollow steel needles were implanted into the respective fairings as gun barrels.
A thinner pitot, created from heated sprue material, was used instead of the rather massive OOB part. The ranging radar fairing in the intake was slightly enlarged with the help of white glue. And, finally, a piece of sprue was implanted into the fin’s base as a brake parachute fairing, reminiscent of the Polish Lim-6/7, license-produced MiG-17s.
SPOTLIGHT SESSION
The Mental Well-Being of the Next Generation: How We Can Support Young People’s Mental Health Amid Multiple Existential Threats
2:30 - 4:00 p.m. ET
Location: Mercury Ballroom
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated an existing mental health crisis, particularly among children and young people. The emergence of “climate anxiety,” new and ongoing international conflicts, and widespread use of technology have added to the stressors impacting our youth across the globe. A study last year estimated that one in seven children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa have experienced significant psychological challenges, and almost 10 percent qualify for a psychiatric diagnosis. Overdose rates among teens in the United States are on the rise. Youth are facing cultural and infrastructural challenges – from stigma in seeking help to barriers in accessing support – in finding the tools and treatment they need.
This session will explore:
•How can organizations take action to directly support the mental health of young people in their communities and around the world?
•How can we develop and implement effective models for delivering mental health care in schools, clinics, and community settings?
•How can we leverage technology – which has exacerbated much of the mental health crisis among today’s youth – to reduce stigma and give youth easier access to support and treatment?
Speakers:
•Dr. Tia Dole, Executive Director, The Steve Fund
•Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General
•Heather White, Author & Founder, OneGreenThing.org
•Tristan Harris, Co-Founder & President, Center for Humane Technolog
•Mahmoud Abdelwahab Khedr, Founder & CEO, FloraMind

•Dometi Pongo, Journalist, MTV News
