Judith and her Maidservant, c.1615-17

Artemisia Gentileschi

Artemisia imagines the aftermath of this violent act, with Judith and her maidservant fearful at being discovered and preparing to make their escape. Holofernes’s oversized sword rests on Judith’s shoulder, its blade’s proximity to her exposed neck a vivid reminder of what has just taken place.

Judith beheading Holofernes, c.1612-13

Artemisia Gentileschi

Assyrian king Nebuchadnezzar sent his general Holofernes to besiege the Jewish city of Bethulia. Judith, described as a beautiful young widow, resolves to save her people by slaying Holofernes herself. After reciting a long prayer to God, she dons her finest clothes in order to seduce him. After Holofernes has drank enough wine to become intoxicated, Judith decapitates him with his own sword, winning a decisive victory for the Israelites.

From Artemisia

(October 2020 to January 2021)

"I will show Your Illustrious Lordship what a woman can do"

In 17th-century Europe, at a time when women artists were not easily accepted, Artemisia was exceptional. She challenged conventions and defied expectations to become a successful artist and one of the greatest storytellers of her time.

Artemisia painted subjects that were traditionally the preserve of male artists and for the male gaze; transforming meek maidservants into courageous conspirators and victims into survivors.

In this first major exhibition of Artemisia’s work in the UK, see her best-known paintings including two versions of her iconic and viscerally violent ‘Judith beheading Holofernes’; as well as her self portraits, heroines from history and the Bible, and recently discovered personal letters, seen in the UK for the first time.

Execution Rocks Lighthouse is located in Long Island Sound. Legend has it that the British used to chain prisoners to the rocks at low tide and wait for them to drown as the tide came in. The lighthouse was built in the 1840's and recently handed over to a non-profit for restoration. It is a 30 minute boat ride away from the shore, and has no electricity or running water, plus it is rumored to be haunted.

Congress’ Role in the Making and Execution of National Security Policy in the Trump Era

President Obama and the Republican Congress were usually at odds over national security policy. With a Republican in the White House now, will the President and Congress see eye to eye on threats and their solutions, or will differing institutional pressures and perspectives keep the respective ends of Pennsylvania Avenue apart? And, will the congressional investigations of Russia’s attempt to influence the presidential election end with a bang or a whimper? However the investigations conclude, what impact will they have on the relationship between the two branches?

The Church of St Kyneburgha, Castor

North Aisle –Wall Painting of the Martyrdom of St Catherine

The wall-painting, dating from the 14thCentury, contains three scenes from the martyrdom of St Catherine. The top painting shows Catherine in “Dispute with the Philosophers”; the middle ones the “Execution of the Philosophers”, and the lower one the ‘Catherine Wheel’ (broken by a knife-wielding angel), preceding Catherine’s death. The cult of St Catherine was very popular in the Late Middle Ages. She is supposed to have been the niece of the Emperor Maximus who, on discovering she was a Christian, ordered his philosophers to convert her. However, she succeeded in converting them, and Maximus duly had them strangled. He then ordered her to be broken on a wheel –t he origin of the Catherine Wheel. The painting at Castor was uncovered in 1842, and restored in the 1986 by Liz Hirst.

The Church of St Kyneburgha is an ancient grade I listed building. It is regarded amongst the top 100 churches in England. It has been a place of worship since the 4th Century. The building includes Roman, Saxon and Norman stonework. The famous NormanTower is probably the finest Romanesque parish church tower in England. The beautiful nave roof (c1450) consists of 60 angels and other figures. Others items of interest include Saxon carvings, the fascinating sculptures on the capitals of the Norman Tower shafts, the medieval Lady Chapel stone altar and the wall painting (c1350) depicting the martyrdom of St Katharine.

Castor is known internationally among archaeologists as the centre of an important Roman settlement along the Nene valley west of Peterborough. The Roman palace (c. 250 AD) or praetorium (underneath the churchyard and surrounding area) was the second largest Roman building in Britain replacing an earlier first century villa. The church is built on the site of the Roman courtyard. Whatever survived from the Roman period, St Kyneburgha, daughter of King Penda of Mercia founded a double convent (men and women) on the site in the Celtic tradition bringing monks from Lindisfarne and was the first Abbess. After being sacked by the Vikings the church functioned as a Saxon minster church and was rebuilt by the Normans c1100 and further extended in c1220 (S Aisle and 1310 (N Aisle). The broach spire was added to the tower c1350.

The Carson Mansion is a large Victorian house located in Old Town, Eureka, California. Regarded as one of the highest executions of American Queen Anne Style architecture, the home is "considered the most grand Victorian home in America." It is one of the most written about and photographed Victorian houses in California, and perhaps, in the United States. Originally the home of one of Northern California's first major lumber barons, since 1950 it has been a private club, The home and grounds are not open to the public.

The mansion is a mix of every major style of Victorian Architecture, including but not limited to: Eastlake, Italianate, Queen Anne (primary), and Stick. One nationally known architectural historian described the home as "a baronial castle in Redwood..." and stated further that "The illusion of grandeur in the house is heightened by the play on scale, the use of fanciful detail and the handling of mass as separate volumes, topped by a lively roofscape." The style of the mansion has been described as "eclectic" and "peculiarily American." Unlike most other homes dating from the period, this property has always been maintained, and is in nearly the same condition as when it was built.

The exact spot where James Connolly was executed.

So, after a lot of ebaying my models have started turning up. Here's Darth Maul. Having just had a disagreement with a trooper he's off for a stroll.......

Yesterday we walked up to La Pinouse.

The buildings at La Pinouse commemorate the execution of Julien Panchot on the 2nd August 1944. Leader of the resistance group Henri Barbusse he was wounded, captured, tortured and shot during the events of 29th July to 3rd August 1944.

The story, briefly, is that the Resistance group raided the nearby town of Prades whereupon the occupying forces together with the local militia launched a punitive revenge attack on the village of Valmanya. The route to the village was defended by a mixed force of French Resistance and Spanish Guérilleros. Enough time was bought to enable most of the villages to escape but four were caught and shot dead. The village was then ransacked and destroyed.

The Resistance and Guérilleros were then attacked at their refuge of La Pinouse in the valley of La Rabaça on the southern foothills of the Canigou massif.

It was here that the already wounded Panchot was cruelly handled and subsequently died at the hands of his enemies. A plaque on the wall of the now ruined buildings commemorates his patriotic sacrifice some 64 years ago.

The surviving Resistance and Guérilleros then regrouped north of the Col de Jau.

At one time the buildings at La Pinouse housed upwards of 500 workers who mined iron ore from the early 1900s to the early thirties. Although they were very solidly built at the time I would guess that another twenty or so harsh winters at 1800 metres will see them bought completely to the ground which will be another case of history made and then lost.

According to Kaleme website, Hamid Ghassemi-Shall and his family have been informed of his imminent execution during this week’s visit at Evin Prison.

Hamid Ghassemi-Shall, 42, was arrested in 2008 while visiting his family, and was later charged with espionage.

He was sentenced to death in 2009. An Iranian court has rejected an appeal.

“Canada is gravely concerned by indications that the execution of Mr. Ghassemi-Shall may be carried out imminently,” Baird said in a joint statement Sunday with Diane Ablonczy, the junior minister for foreign affairs.

Baird called on the Iranian government to grant clemency to Ghassemi-Shall on compassionate and humanitarian grounds and to respect its international human rights obligations.

The Iranian-born Ghassemi-Shall emigrated to Canada after Iran’s 1979 revolution, and most recently lived in Toronto.

He is awaiting execution in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, where another Canadian — photojournalist Zahra Kazemi of Montreal — was beaten, raped and killed in 2003.

Another Canadian resident, web programmer Saeed Malekpour of Richmond Hill, Ont., is also on death row in Evin prison. Malekpour, who was born in Iran, is charged with setting up a website that was used to post pornography. He maintains his innocence and says he was tortured into confessing to crimes against Islam.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is also calling on Iran to spare the life of an Iranian-Canadian convicted of espionage and awaiting execution.

Harper warned there will be consequences if Hamid Ghassemi-Shall is executed.

Harper’s warning followed a similar statement by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird who said Sunday that Ottawa is “gravely concerned” by indications that Ghassemi-Shall’s execution may be imminent.

“We urge Iran to reverse its current course and to adhere to its international human rights obligations,” Baird said.
