Site of the pawpaw tree incident where three McCoy brothers were tied to the trees and shot in 1882. This was just on the Kentucky side of the river outside of Matewan, WV.
The historical marker at the site reads: "Pawpaw Tree Incident: This episode is result of 1882 election-day fight. Tolbert, a son of Randolph McCoy, exchanged heated words with Ellison Hatfield, which started a fight. Tolbert, Pharmer and Randolph McCoy Jr. stabbed Ellison to death. Later the three brothers were captured by Hatfield clan, tied to the pawpaw trees, and shot in retaliation."

Just a little note on how I did this. The thing was only about two inches long. I made it out of a piece of cord that opened some old Venetian blinds and held it out in front of me and took a few pictures with the flash. After that all I had to do was mess with the picture a little to get it how I liked it.
This depicts Mary Queen of Scots being led to her Execution on 8th February 1587. The great staircase at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire acts as the setting. Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire was long demolished by this time.
It was painted in 1871 by Laslett J Pott (1837-1898). It was purchased for the Nottingham Castle Art Gallery in 1898. It has been on display for all of the 30 years that I have known this Art Gallery.
They are presently rehanging the works on the first floor. This picture is presently being displayed in one of the staircase landings ~ so reflections are particularly problematic.
In the woods north of Barack X, the gas chamber building is the execution wall where the Nazis shot Russian POWs who were thought to be Communist commissars, and other political prisoners. A ditch about six feet in front of the wall was designed to catch the flow of blood. The photograph shows a marker at this execution spot, which was called the "pistol range."
Execution Rocks Lighthouse is located in Long Island Sound. Legend has it that the British used to chain prisoners to the rocks at low tide and wait for them to drown as the tide came in. The lighthouse was built in the 1840's and recently handed over to a non-profit for restoration. It is a 30 minute boat ride away from the shore, and has no electricity or running water, plus it is rumored to be haunted.

The Postcard
A postally unused Wellington Series postcard published by Gale & Polden Ltd.
It bears an early image of the execution block and axe in the Tower of London.
The Tower of London
On the 23rd. September 1940, during the Blitz, high-explosive bombs damaged the castle, destroying several buildings and narrowly missing the White Tower. After the war, the damage was repaired and the Tower of London was reopened to the public.
A 1974 Tower of London bombing in the White Tower Mortar Room left one person dead and 41 injured. No one claimed responsibility for the blast, but the police suspected that the IRA was behind it.

Munkholmen (the munk's islet) in the Trondheim fjord. It has been an execution site, monastery, fort, prison and was fitted with anti-aircraft weapons by the Germans during WWII to protect the submarine base they established in Trondheim.
Today it is a tourist attraction and often used as a hangout on nice summer days for people living in Trondheim.

I love helping the Water Quality folks. Who knew a year ago (or any time reference for that matter) that I would be pulling gears on the back of a research vessel in a snowstorm all over Long Island Sound? Definately not me. I'm loving this wonderful journey!

This was taken in the execution cell in Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast. The rope dates back to the time of the last executions but was a spare that was not used to take a life.

This poignant memorial - a glass pillow, indented as if by an invisible head - commemorates the execution of those seven prisoners 'honoured' to have been beheaded within the Tower itself.
Best known is Anne Boleyn, tragic second wife of King Henry VIII. Her sad tale lives on in some of the countless ghost stories that haunt London. For details, see my Haunted London (The History Press, 2007) and Haunted Lambeth (The History Press, 2013).

The firing range. Folks would be lined up in the covered area in the foreground and the execution squad would stand at the far end. Eventually the Nazis realized that they needed a better, more efficient means of extermination and built the facility in the background.
Executions of Jews by German army mobile killing units, in German, the Einsatzgruppen, near Ivangorod, Ukraine, 1942. The iconic photo was mailed from the Eastern Front to Germany and intercepted at a Warsaw post office by a member of the Polish resistance collecting documentation on Nazi war crimes. I discovered something on this picture that might rewrite its comprehension. As you can see, they are wearing bags on their heads, except the woman with a child -also with a bag- who, as it can be seen on the left side, has thrown his bag and run away. A soldier is killing her for doing so. In any case, it is known that everybody depicted was executed. Today it marks the Holocaust Remembrance Day, in remembrance of the victims, survivors, and rescuers of the Holocaust. The picture shows the Einsatzgruppen, an aspect often not considered when people think on the Holocaust. They were SS paramilitary death squads responsible for mass killings, generally by shooting. The Einsatzgruppen not only were involved in the murder of hundreds of intellectuals, but of thousands of innocent civilians, Jews, and Gypsies.
