All I can really say is that this show was bigger and better than I had ever hoped for. Evolve took on a life of its own and so many of the artists shared their own powerful stories of overcoming whatever life has tossed along their path.

Over 20 photographers, ceramicists and artists were part of this event. Gay, straight, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, Black Latino, White, Armenian, poor, broke, rich, wealthy, HIV positive, HIV negative and even two homeless individuals were all artists in this show. The was a direct representation of what Los Angeles looks like and together we showed why we are the City of Angels

About 400 attended the opening at Art Share-LA in Downtown Los Angeles. The event was a complete success with people coming from as far north as Sacramento as far south as San Diego. New York, Denver and even two folks from Atlanta made the trek to the Evolve opening. I was completely blown away.

Big thanks to all the artists for their beautiful pieces, my family, friends and supporters for continuing to embrace my work through Project KengiKat and Do Something Saturday and to everyone who donated and attended the event I want to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.

Staehely Valley Veue Dairy Farm is located in Oregon City, less than 20 miles from Portland. The 350-acre property has stood strong through multiple generations. Currently run by Paul and Diane Staehely with their son and nephew, the property was first passed down from Paul's grandfather and two great uncles and then from his father and two uncles.

The farm has been in dairy production for several generations and transitioned to organic dairy 16 years ago. This year, the Staehley family made the difficult decision to transition the organic dairy to beef production, as being a smaller organic dairy was becoming less of a viable option.

In 2021, Staehely wanted to reduce input costs and increase productivity across operations. He connected with Kim Galland, NRCS Oregon District Conservationist in Clackamas County, to apply for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) On-Farm Energy Initiative.

Through EQIP On-Farm Energy Initiative, Staehely worked with a Technical Service Provider to develop an agricultural energy management plan, which essentially acts as an energy audit, for the farm. The energy management plan itemized energy usage of Staehely's agricultural systems to evaluate his farm's current energy usage levels. Once that baseline was established, Galland worked with Staehely on recommendations to improve energy efficiencies and what the return on investment was in terms of cost and time. The plan helped Staehely consider various options for his operation and encouraged him to implement irrigation improvements that converted a wheel line system to center pivots. This enabled Staehely to conserve water and save on energy and labor costs.

Water usage is top of mind for many farmers in the West. Oregon has experienced extreme drought in recent years. In 2021, Staehely worked with Galland to apply for EQIP - Conservation Incentives Contract (CIC), a new program for NRCS that targets climate-smart conservation. Through EQIP-CIC, Staehely installed two irrigation pivots across his pastures. The two new pivots help Staehely use water more efficiently while reducing operation costs. The pivot sprinklers also spray water closer to the ground, reducing the amount of water lost through evaporation. Staehley pointed out that he now has more water in the creek throughout the summer watering season, which is something the wildlife, his grandkids and his dog Roxie benefit from. Staehley will also be implementing an advanced system for irrigation water management that will use sensors to measure water moisture levels for even more precise water use.

As the years pass, Staehely is thinking long-term about farm efficiencies and improvements. However operations evolve at Staehely Valley Veue Dairy Farm, one thing is certain - Staehely's conservation successes point to a bright future for his land.

Ultra Short Road Trip

History[edit]

The first road trip by automobile[edit]

The Benz Patent-Motorwagen Number 3 of 1888, used by Bertha Benz for the highly publicized first long distance road trip by automobile (of over 106 km / 60 miles)

The world's first recorded long distance road trip by automobile took place in Germany in August 1888 when Bertha Benz, the wife of Karl Benz, the inventor of the first patented motor car (the Benz Patent-Motorwagen), travelled from Mannheim to Pforzheim (a distance of 106 km (66 mi))[1] in the third experimental Benz motor car (which had a maximum speed of 10 miles per hour (16 km/h)) and back, with her two teenage sons Richard and Eugen, but without the consent and knowledge of her husband.

Her official reason was that she wanted to visit her mother but unofficially she intended to generate publicity for her husband's invention (which had only been used on short test drives before), which succeeded as the automobile took off greatly afterwards and the Benz's family business eventually evolved into the present day Mercedes-Benz company.[2]

Presently there is a dedicated signposted scenic route in Baden-Württemberg called the Bertha Benz Memorial Route to commemorate her historic first road trip.[3]

The first road trips in North America[edit]

Jackson driving the Vermont on the 1903 cross-country drive

The first successful North American transcontinental trip by automobile took place in 1903 and was piloted by H. Nelson Jackson and Sewall K. Crocker, accompanied by a dog named Bud.[4] The trip was completed using a 1903 Winton Touring Car, dubbed "Vermont" by Jackson. The trip took a total of 63 days between San Francisco and New York, costing US$8,000. The total cost included items such as food, gasoline, lodging, tires, parts, other supplies, and the cost of the Winton.

The first woman to cross the American landscape by car was Alice Ramsey with three female passengers in 1909.[5] Ramsey left from Hell's Gate in Manhattan, New York and traveled 59 days to San Francisco, California. Ramsey was followed in 1910 by Blanche Stuart Scott, who is often mistakenly cited as the first woman to make the cross-country journey by automobile East-to-West (but was a true pioneer in aviation).
