MOTHER I MISS YOU – JOHN TESH
I search long and hard sometimes to find the right song and I was moved to tears by this because some days I miss my Mum more than others … It's been hard growing up without her, but I hope that she will be proud of the woman I've become.
Mummy spider is all of a fluster
hurrying back to her baby cluster
kept spick and span with a feather duster
nothing in her nest is ever lack lustre
the golden rays of sun shine down and down
and make her smile and stop her frown
now she can really go to town
have a party for her babies but without a clown!
She's really scared of clowns you see
because she grew up near a family
in a big tent that they called a marquee
where the clowns all lived silly and happily
They made people smile
they would come from miles and miles
but mummy spider preferred the tiles
of a little cottage over a country stile
but the clowns would find her any way
when they took a holiday
with greasy faces white as clay
they would frighten all the spiders away
Not just mummy but others too
even the old lady who lived in a shoe
so there was only one thing left to do
live in Poppy's garden without further ado
Here mummy spider's babies can have lots of fun
on their silken threads they can run and run
but always return to their cluster lit by the sun

Every year I discover more Wild Geraniums growing in our flower garden. A bit of online sleuthing helped me understand just how powerful these little flowers are at spreading their seeds. Here's to having scads of perennial flowers and sedum in one's garden. Every year brings more flowers to love. I went to Powell River to see my lifer Black-tailed Gull. It is a bird I have always wanted to see. It was a really long day to get there and get back home but was worth every minute. He flew all the way from Asia, the least I can do is travel 6.5 hours and take 2 ferries to see him! He used to stay on a rock in the middle of the ocean that you had to have a boat to get to but today he flew right into town on the government dock allowing us to view him from land. I also got to see a pod of Pacific White-Sided Dolphins frolicking behind him. I rarely get to see dolphins so it was a special treat. This gull is really stunning. It is a 3rd cycle gull and he has beautiful pale eyes, white eye arcs and that unique yellow bill with black ring and red tip. Plus of course his conspicuous black tail band and white rump. He flew into the ocean once for a quick swim and it allowed me to see that. He really is very elegant with his dark grey back and wings and black wingtips. I'm really lucky I got to see him so close to shore today. This is the 422 nd bird I have seen in BC. This is the second rare Asiatic gull in BC right now as a Slaty-backed Gull was found a few days later but has not been relocated.
This is a heavy crop but wanted to post it anyways since it is such a special bird.
This is only the 3rd confirmed photo documented record for the province of BC. This bird is listed as a code 4 by the ABA.
Every year in Spring the Common Cranes arrive in Sweden from Spain and Germany. They have arrived to perform their mating dance. It is a spectacle I have looked forward to for years and it did not disappoint. The first two days the weather was really bad, torrential rain and low visibility and -6deg C
Cranes are monogamous and most arrive with their partners among the thousands of other birds, whooper swans, coots, grebes and geese. The call and noise of these birds is deafening but a sight to behold. Day 3 finally the weather forecast showed good weather but -15C. It was a wonderful red, orange sky, aflame with thousands of birds arriving.
They flew across the flaming sky and danced, pirouetting, bowing which helps in establishing life long bonds with existing and new partners.
When nesting, Common cranes "paint" their bodies with mud or decaying vegetation, apparently in order to blend into their nesting environment. The nest is either in or very near shallow water, often with dense shore vegetation nearby, and may be used over several years.
Mythology has it that the crane, if treated with due respect, will bring luck, success and a long life. Farmers in western Sweden have a long tradition of paying homage to the bird by mimicking its leggy gait in a ritual dance around the farmhouse.
An amazing experience despite the freezing temperatures and one that I will always remember.

Every day at the billabong ends with a huge party of birdlife.
One last burst of life as night falls, so noisy it's deafening, and frantically busy.
Massive numbers of these rainbow lorikeets, as well as the big white sulfur-crested cockatoos, and the pink and grey galahs, all chattering, screeching, swooping and zooming about, and having their last feed, way up high in the surrounding tree tops, before finally choosing which tree to settle in for the night.
Here's one pic I thought I'd never capture, due to the height they're at, and their speedy antics in the fast fading light.
Actually held the camera way above my head as high as my arms could stretch, just to get a bit closer on zoom, and tilted it at the best angle to catch whatever light possible.
I really couldn't see a darn thing on the screen in such low light and holding it so far away - surprised I got a few, not perfect focus, but hey, I was delighted :)

Every once in awhile after going out and taking a bunch of photos, as I am looking at them on my computer, I come across one that haunts me... and I know that I will be going back to retake it, or do something a little bit different with it. This is one of them. I keep wondering WHO should be sitting in these chairs... clearly they are arranged and waiting for a spirited conversation between.... WHO...and and what? Are all the chairs occupied, or Is someone missing? I have to think about this one for a bit. So...expect to see this again!
Who are you missing? I'm sure in these strange times that we are living through, we are all missing something or someone. This is just a story waiting to be written! Stay tuned!
