Just about every rocky shoreline in the Galapagos Islands is home to the marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus), the only sea-going lizard in the world. The marine iguana is an extraordinary animal that lives on land but feeds in the sea, grazing on a variety of seaweed – on exposed rocks, in subtidal areas, or by diving deeper into the cold seawater. This habit, totally unique in iguanas and in fact all lizard species of the world, provides them with an abundant food source. However, they cannot withstand the cold temperatures of the sea for too long and must pull out on land to warm up.Marine iguanas also mate and nest on land. While they have few predators in the sea, on land, young iguanas fall prey to hawks, herons, and other birds. Predation by introduced cats has had a major impact on many populations. Found throughout the islands, concentrations of up to 4,500 individuals per mile are not uncommon in some areas. The total population has been estimated at between 200,000 and 300,000.

The short, blunt nose is well-adapted to feeding on algae growing on rocks. The flattened tail is perfect for swimming, propelling the iguana through the water while its legs hang useless at its sides. Iguanas rid themselves of excess salt, consumed along with the algae, by a special gland connected to their nostrils. Marine iguanas are an excellent example of a species well-adapted and continuing to adapt to their environment. While marine iguanas feed mainly on algae, they have also been known to consume crustaceans and grasshoppers. On one or two islands, a small percentage of marine iguanas have been observed feeding on terrestrial vegetation, perhaps an adaptation to the near complete absence of nutritional sea algae during strong El Niño events.

When marine iguanas go hungry, they don’t just become thinner, they get shorter too. A scientist recently found that in times of El Niño-induced famine, the marine iguanas will shrink in length and then regrow as food becomes plentiful again. This finding, reported in the scientific journal Nature, is the first of a shrinking adult vertebrate. The adult iguanas can switch between growth and shrinkage repeatedly throughout their lifetime – a perfect adaptation to the boom and bust cycles in Galapagos associated with El Niño. The researchers postulate that bone absorption accounts for much of the reduction, with iguanas literally digesting part of their bones to survive.

Marine iguanas show their color as they mature – the young are black, while adults range from red and black, to black, green, red and grey, depending on the island, with Española marine iguanas being the most colorful of all, and earning them the nickname “Christmas Iguanas.” Marine iguanas become more colorful in the breeding season, at which time males defend territories on land where they mate with the females, who then lay their eggs in burrows. Marine iguanas lay 2 to 3 large eggs, which hatch between 2 ½ and 4 months later. Marine iguanas are known to live up to 60 years.

Every year, on the anniversary of the city's return to Chinese rule, pro-democracy protestors take part in huge, peaceful protests against what they see as the heavy-handed influence of the central government. Police said 98,600 people took part in the march, while organizers said 510,000 participated. Statisticians from the University of Hong Kong estimated the turnout as between 154,000 and 172,000.

No offense to Batman, but his belly is so big that his face is out of focus in the depth of field. But I love the costume and this big guy's hero spirit.

You know what they say about the early morning light in photography.

Being a night owl, I don’t get to see it often. But this time it was worth it.

A personal fave.

Every Friday since January I go to the local Farmer's Market which sets up for the morning. Fresh fruit and veges. come in from around the area. I go for the strawberries and get a three basket pack like this for only $5. Right now they're at their peak and so good.

This was my first ever capture of the International Space Station. I wasn't planning to photograph it, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time! :-)

"Todos los días tenemos miedo" habla sobre cómo nos va consumiendo una fobia, la reflexión es saber cómo la podemos dominar o hacer parte de nuestra vida sin que nos domine.

Every day we are afraid speech on how a phobia is consuming us, the reflection is to know how we can dominate or do part of our life without it dominates us.

Every summer, I've searched for these caterpillars on maypops (Passiflora incarnate) vine that I planted in our yard several years ago. This was the first summer that I had not observed any. On October 12, I located several caterpillars and finally observed a bright Gulf Fritillary butterfly on November 4!! Confirmed only in a few counties in Kentucky, it is uncommon in Lincoln Co.

Every day carry (EDC) refers to various items, usually small, that are worn or carried by a person on a daily basis for use in everyday tasks from the mundane to the unexpected -Wikipedia

All of the items that help me do a better job in some of my collateral assignments and many items are a must have just to function away from home for days on end.

Unexpected find on a forced visit to Exeter

Every Sunday I post an image of a church, from the many we've all visited whenever traveling. Today is a bit different. This religious ceremony was occuring just outside the Dattatreya Temple in the Derbar Square in Bhaktapur, Nepal. I was not aware it was sacred in nature, thinking it was some form of festivity, until I was asked to not photograph the event, so this is my only image.

Arriving in Bhaktapur was like stepping back in time. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city served as the capital of Nepal during the 14th to 16th centuries and is largely preserved. It is 35 km east of Khatmandu, and filled with squares, temples, statues, and palaces linked by mainly pedestrian-only streets. I've visited this 'City of Devotees' twice and would readily return. From a slide scan taken in 2001.

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year.

Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 6mm in diameter, except the clover which are 4mm, the stars, which are 3mm. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble.

These baubles are smaller than some others I do, and because it is a simple pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours per side.

It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

Every year, on or around Yule (we always pick a Sunday) the Druids of Avilion have a Yule cermony. This year too, though it was a little bit weird since sis Londor was supposed to officiate....

Luckily we're blessed with the whole Druids of Avilion group, and so several of my brothers and sisters joined me and we officiated all together in sis Londor's name.
