Tech Details: Photo taken with Canon 5D MkII and a Canon 35mm f/1.4L lens. Lighting provided by a Canon 580EX II off-camera to the left of the frame, flash head zoomed in to control light spill, flash triggered by Pocket Wizard Plus II's.
...important tip: Make sure your Wizards have enough battery power, mine ran out in the middle of the shoot.
it was soooo hot in the house last evening that bob suggested we head over to seadancer dock.
it is the longest dock on the island, and always, always, always has a breeze (which is purely wonderful) AND the best sunset viewing ever.
last night was spectacular.
the real color of the evening sky without any of keisha's editing. the mountains in the background, and someone's satellite dish. the blazing glory of the Sól.
Up on Boreas Pass waiting for night to fall, took a quick snapshot of the light on the mountian. As it turned out the night shoot was not good,(my fault not the cameras) and this turned out to be the best of the evening. Oh Well!
This abstract piece was inspired by my contemplation of how through years of experiences and relationships our hearts grow more and more layers that meld together to tell a beautiful story ...by the 'evening' of our lives. Even when our heart gets broken or bruised, in time the wisdom we gain transforms that pain into something beautiful.

This one was a 75 second exposure. It was about this point that my ears started to really hurt from the cold.

Of course I had to take a picture of my girls on the day before flying out of the USA. They will be staying a little longer to continue their adventure without me.
This is ANTIQUE Japanese Furisode. Furisode are formal kimono for young, unmarried women. This piece likely originates in the Taisho (1912 - 1926) or early Showa Period. It features a bold pattern of clover flowers, vines and checkered clouds on a gradated vermillion and purple background. The colour is best represented in the detail photos. This kimono was mostly likely an odori (dance) kimono and may have been worn by a maiko. There are pinholes and discolouration indicating sleeve and shoulder tucks which can be seen in the damage photos above. The furisode also lacks crests, which is unusual for the time period, but would have made sense for a stage piece. Though this furisode is not likely a hikizuri due to its length, it may have been worn on stage with an ohashiori, or by a very short dancer. It is also possible that this was a furisode meant for a youngster who was still growing.
I have inspected this furisode in detail, and there is some damage. There are some faint stains, as well as patina on many of the lighter coloured areas. As mentioned previously, there are pinholes and discolouration lines where sleeve and shoulder tucks would have existed.
Overall, I would rate this furisode in good to excellent antique condition. This garment is 100% silk.

SIZING:
If you are unsure of how to interpret the kimono's size it is important to know that the length (collar - hem) should be approximately 10cm longer to 10cm shorter than the wearer's overall height (longer is better). This is because the excess length will be folded up at the waist. Meanwhile, the skirt should wrap around the hips a full 1.5 times. The armspan should also reach wrist to wrist on the wearer. If this kimono is worn with a waist fold, it will ideally fit a woman about 138cm (4'6") - 158cm (5'2") tall. This kimono will ideally fit a woman with hips about 84cm (33") around. There is some give and take in these measurements though.

I can only guess that this was somewhere in Orange Free Sate, with the onset of a storm. My notes for this photo are sadly lacking. One of those negs that at the time was just too difficult to print, but all that has changed with the enlarger being superseded by the scanner. South Africa Early 1976. © David Hill
