Aunt Lil...1920's

"From the daring decade of the 1920s--think glittering nightlife, flapper fashion, the heady perfume of luxury...came the fragrance Soir de Paris, of Evening in Paris, as we knew it here. By the 1950's it was touted as the fragrance more women wear than any other in the world and by 1969 it had disappeared." Vermont Country Store Website.

The evening grosbeaks are back and they have a lot of catching up to do. The air is filled with their calls and, apparently, they are really hungry. A black-headed grosbeak is flying away.

I'm excited to see them. They stay just long enough to nest, about 4-6 weeks in total, and then I won't see them again until next year.

Psalm 42:7

New King James Version (NKJV)

7 Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;

All Your waves and billows have gone over me. Wind and Wave Obey Jesus Matthew 8 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

The light was kind.

I keep thinking about getting a macro with VR for this type of shot. Nothing wrong with my manual ancient 55mm f3.5 but on APS it's getting a bit close for field hand held work the shading becomes an issue.

The British Railways BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed for British Railways by Robert Riddles. The Class 9F was the last in a series of standardised locomotive classes designed for British Railways during the 1950s, and was intended for use on fast, heavy freight trains over long distances. It was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Britain, and successfully performed its intended duties. The class earned a nickname of 'Spaceships'.

At various times during the 1950s, the 9Fs worked passenger trains with great success, indicating the versatility of the design, sometime considered to represent the ultimate in British steam development. Several variants were constructed for experimentation purpose in an effort to reduce costs and maintenance, although these met with varying degrees of success.

The total number built was 251, production being shared between Swindon (53) and Crewe Works (198). The last of the class, 92220 Evening Star, was the final steam locomotive to be built by British Railways, in 1960. Withdrawals began in 1964, with the final locomotives removed from service in 1968. Several examples have survived into the preservation era in varying states of repair, including Evening Star.

These young Buddhist nuns, like their male counterparts, rely on the generosity of the townspeople for food and upkeep. Twice a day, in the morning and evening, they can be seen walking through the village with rice bowls in hand, collecting meals for private dining behind the temple wall.

The exquisite paradox in Buddhism is that the more we give – and the more we give without seeking something in return – the wealthier (in the broadest sense of the word) we will become. By giving we destroy those acquisitive impulses that ultimately lead to further suffering.
