Three simple travel scenario I like to use when thinking about electric cars and charging.
But first, some info on charging types….
Level 1: Regular 110v chargers at ~4 miles per charge hour.
Level 2: Regular 220v chargers at ~25 miles per charge hour
Level 3: a.k.a. DC Fast Chargers at ~75-100 miles per charge hour
Tesla Superchargers are DC Fast Chargers
So, back to our trip to State College….
Our son lives about 20 miles outside of State College Pennsylvania which is about a 150 mile each way trip for us. Probably about 80-85% of the distance is on highways at 60-65 mph speeds. The trip TO State College is fundamentally uphill with one long steep hill to climb. The entire trip takes about 2-1/2 to 3 hours in a conventional ICE car.
Chevy VOLT Plug-In Hybrid: I would put the car in “Hold” mode and do all of the highway miles with the gas generator. Saves battery for the local portions of the trip. Battery range is about 55 miles. The VOLT holds ~9 gallons of gas which provides about 350 miles of range at about 42MPG. I would bring my Level 1 charger and plug in at my sons house overnight. The VOLT has a small charger and only gets 4 miles/ChgHr of range from a Level 1 charger and 12 miles/ChgHr of range for Level 2 chargers. Basically, there is NO “range anxiety” with this option because of the range extender ICE.
Chevy BOLT EV all electric: The BOLT has a max battery range of about 230 miles so only about 70-80 miles (max) of range remains when I get to my sons house. So obviously, we’ll need another 125 miles of range for a comfortable return trip.
Level 1 charging at my son’s house would take better than 24 hours. OK if we were staying put for a couple days.
Level 2 charging can be found in State College and along the way. ~25miles/ChgHour means we’d have to plugin somewhere for 4-5 hours. Most likely, we’d leave the car plugged in and have someone drive us to/from the charger. A major pain in the tush!
No Level 3 chargers are shown on the PlugShare App for the State College area.
Tesla Model 3 w/Basic Battery: The base Tesla has a max range of about 220 miles so, again, we would get to my son’s house with a max of about 65-70 miles remaining. The Tesla comes with adapters for plugging into a regular Level 2 charger BUT PlugShare shows several Tesla Superchargers in the area. Plug into one of those for an hour or so and you’re good to go. In addition, there are Superchargers along the way in the Harrisburg area where a few additional miles can be picked up if needed.
A word about the Tesla battery. +$5,000 gets you a mid-range battery with ~270 miles. +$9,000 gets you an extended range battery with ~310 miles. So, one of these larger batteries should be considered IF you anticipate doing a lot of distance traveling.
Regardless of EV battery range, charge stops will take longer than simply filling up with gas. Overall trip time will be longer and that assumes you can get access to a charger. The growing number of EVs has resulted in some charge stations being tied up with people waiting in line for a turn. In addition, some charge stations have imposed a time limit on how long you can remain plugged in. Some have even started imposing a per minute fee for time spent plugged in after charging is complete.
Some 2-car families will have one of them be an ICE car while others will simple rent an ICE car for those occasional road trips. Currently, we are in the 2-car group and have an ICE vehicle as one of our two cars. For now, our EV is a Chevy VOLT with a range extender ICE so road trips, with either car, aren’t an issue. Frankly, range anxiety would do my wife in hence the reason one of our cars will be an ICE car.
All of these EVs are great for running errands locally. Most charging is done at home.
November 2018. GM just announced several plant closures one of which spells the demise of the Chevy VOLT. Production is slated to stop in March 2019.

This kind of moped was ruled illegal in NSW about 8 years ago-- while they were supplied with pedals, they were functionally useless, and therefore wouldn't fit the 'motor assisted bicycle' definition.
The owner of this must've chucked the pedals when there's no need to keep the pretense...
