The Shadow of a Gaze: Erosion of a Presence

“Veil of Haifoss” captures one of Iceland’s most dramatic waterfalls, where a sheer column of water plunges into a mist-shrouded canyon. The basalt walls, layered with volcanic history, frame the falls in contrasting bands of moss green and iron red. At the base, rising spray transforms raw power into ethereal softness — a fleeting veil against the ancient rock. This image explores the tension between permanence and transience, geology and atmosphere, strength and delicacy.
Bought some Dutch Iris at Trader Joes earlier this week and played around today photographing them. Stretching my comfort zone of "everything must be in focus" to experiment with shallow DOF. I have always admired Cindy's ( @impromptuphotography on Instagram ) ethereal soft flower images so I was going for that look. I'm pleased with result. But also took some stopped down and a series of images that I can focus stack... cuz, ya know, old habits are hard to break.

Virginia Mesones is a stage actress from Argentina who's based in New Jersey. Although she's performed in various theater productions around the Greater New York area, she's best known for her living statue characters, and she's become something of a local legend for them. I myself have seen her all over Manhattan, including outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This picture and the one that comes after it were taken three days after the previous ones. Her beauty left me wanting more. :-D
The Blue Fairy is one of many "living statue" characters she plays, and as apparitional as she looks in full costume, she's even more so as herself. She has that same ethereal, soft, haunting beauty commonly associated with one of her countrywomen - ballet dancer Paloma Herrera.
I remember this moment. It was late winter/early spring, and I was walking by the river with my new camera, a Pentax Spotmatic. I had a 200mm lens for it, my first real telephoto. The light that day was ethereal - soft and saturated with moisture. It was very mild and the last ice was breaking up on the river. Not knowing any better, I believe I made exactly one photo... today I would shoot a hundred, two hundred, push myself toward... something. We all have to learn. These were baby steps.

Smoke from forest fires cloaked the Tetons as I drove to Jackson from the north past Grand Teton National Park near dusk. Conditions didn't present me with the classic Teton shot, but the smoke did add a beautiful, at least to my mind, blue cast and ethereal softness to the scene.

With our sister Jo due to emigrate to Australia, the five of us Litsons agreed to one last family holiday together, in Malta in the autumn of 1981. Bruce, fresh out of art college, took his camera equipment, a wise decision as the island was conspicuously out of season and there was not much else on offer to quicken the pulse.
Bruce achieved the ethereal soft-focus of these prints by covering the enlarger lens with a pair of tights.
This photograph may have featured at the exhibition at the Blandford Gallery in March 1982.

Another one to scare your young kids with to get them to behave - not that I necessarily approve of using scare tactics to control children. I just merely observe that it is a historically tried and tested method ! )
I did this one a few days ago and got distracted with other things and forgot about it.
I like this one because when I move my head from off-centre of my laptop screen to centre, it appears that my face emerges from the darkness - kinda coming back to haunt me...
I wanted to aim for something that was deliberately low key to give that sense of 'did I see something or was it just my imagination?' to evoke those feelings that you get in very low light and feeling a bit insecure, when your mind starts to play tricks on you because it's robbed of any tangible visual information to work with.
I went for low illumination above and the lens set out-of-focus to remove the solidity of my face and create an ethereal softness...
As the daylight fades, the figures look more and more ghostly and ethereal, soft light illuminating the stories they bear.

Redwoods in the rain, Redwood National Park, California.
Back in November of 2006, I convinced a couple of friends to join me on a quick trip to Redwood National Park, some 8.5 hrs from the Bay area. We stayed at the youth hostel in the national park. We were there for one sunny day and one rainy day...we were lucky to have the sunny day!
As much as the rain is inconvenient for us tourists, I must confess I fell in love with the redwoods in the rain. The whole place is ethereal, soft and lush. It's like being in a dream. The forest smells of rain and damp mud...it smells of life. The tall redwoods reaching beyond the rain and mist for a taste of the sun...And the pretty ferns. It was as if I was in a dreamscape!

I'm afraid I didn't do it justice, but here's what I did-Ethereal Soft Light at 34% and Tea Stained Overlay at Overlay 33%, after taking the saturation down. I also cropped slightly-there are so many ways to do it and I haven't had as much time to play as I'd like! Thanks to BeeSparkle for the use of the image. I have so much to learn.....
